The clock ticked in the background, the only sound that could be heard in the room, except Luna's quiet breathing. She stood beside the stove, glancing up at the clock as she took the pot with boiled potatoes and placed it on the wooden table. A sigh escaped her small mouth and she walked to the window. Outside, it was completely dark and it was silent. She had been waiting for her father to come home for a few hours now. As usual, he had promised to come home early, but Luna knew how much she could trust his words. She had failed in her attempt to stop him when he was going out in the morning, and now he was out somewhere in the dark. Another sigh was heard and then Luna walked out of the kitchen.
Being quite worried, she decided to go outside to check if his father was lying somewhere, coughing blood. The thought of that made her shiver. She opened the door and stepped outside without taking her jacket with her. It was cold and her school uniform was thin, but she ignored the cold and locked the door as she left house. At least there wasn't any wind this evening.
She recalled how her father always told her to never walk outside alone. For a short moment, she considered going back into the house, but she only giggled. She walked to and back from school every day alone. Or well, sometimes with friends, of course.
"Father!" she shouted into the dark. She walked a little along the street that was lit up by a small street light. No one answered her shout. She began to feel scared, glancing around her every few seconds. It was dark, and the dark was something she couldn't really bear with. Increasing her walking speed, she turned around and began to walk back.
