The Davenport institute serves to protect and educate young mutants who may be at risk of discrimination and troubles with their home lives and seeks to help mutants control their powers, with students free to leave after they have proven they can do this. However, many stay in order to receive more intensive training in hopes of joining one of the various super teams around the world, or even the Freedom League itself. Notable ex-students include Emerald City’s 'Princess' and the Freedom League’s 'Seven'.
From the Outside and most passers-by making their way out of Emerald City, the Institute looks like a stately mansion, and because lessons and training tend to happen in the underground facilities, the school manages to keep up its country house façade. This aided by the fact that other than those that attend and work at the school, no-one actually knows where it is. It is common knowledge that it exists and thus, remains hidden in plain sight.
Headmaster of the establishment is Oswald Williams, who previously took up the mantle of ‘The Raven’, Crime fighter extraordinaire of the Freedom League. The current Raven is his daughter. Though his students have speculated this, he tends to keep his origins quiet and always claims he does not know who the current Raven is, although it always gives the old chap a laugh to 'slander' the new Raven as a cheap knock-off. Oswald set up the institution with the help of the late mayor Marcus Davenport. It was the first of its kind and was supposed to only accept students from the Emerald City area, but soon found itself taking in mutants from across the country. Oswald may not be able to fight crime in his old age, but he hopes to now aid mutants in their training and guide them towards a more productive life as well as to teach them to use their powers responsibly.
As part of this, Oswald has created a work experience program for some of the students that stay on at the college. This means taking over a few minor responsibilities of the local super team (Who are always glad to get an afternoon off). This often gets them in good favour with the local authorities and population, enabling them to easily step in as team members when the superheroes inevitably retire.
Talking of resident superheroes…
Emerald City Knights
The Emerald City Knights formed after the events of the ‘Silver Storm’ 5 years ago, which saw a horde of rampaging mutants attack the city after being mutated by the cosmic entity, Tellax the Redeemer. This put Emerald city on the map for criminals and the superpowered community. The Knights managed to put a stop to Tellax’s plans, but his work still lives on in the city as the populace is more susceptible to mutation. The Knights now work to make sure that these mutants stay on the right side of the law, as well as protect them from established villains who may seek to take advantage of the influx of mutants. It is no secret that the group’s headquarters is sponsored by Marstech. During the Silver Storm there were 7 members of the Knights, but currently membership sits at 5 members:
Princess:
The only member to have not been involved with the Silver storm and was instead integrated into membership through the Davenport Institute. Princess is a powerhouse who is able to withstand and deal massive amounts of damage. Oh, and she looooves pink.
Xeno:
A member of the Rul species from Rulu IV, Xeno was part of the resistance who sought to kick the Lor Republic from their planet, however, during an attempt to teleport him on board a Lor ship using prototype technology he was instead cast to Earth, hundreds of years later. Learning that his species had been wiped out by the Lor republic, Xeno has dedicated his life to ensuring the same thing does not happen to his new home, Earth. Xeno is also a part-time member of the Freedom League in cases where they are needed off-world, due to his knowledge of the universe.
Ultramarine:
Known only to the other Knights as Veronica Steeley, Ultramarine is the battle suit wearing genius of the team. After inheriting her father’s diving company, she sought to create more efficient way to scour the seas for ancient treasure, so created her trademark power suit. Ultramarine was famous before the silver storm, having prevented the awaking of atlanteans during one of her expeditions under the sea. She is currently in a relationship with Vortex.
Mongrel:
Part man- Part Werewolf. Michael Morgan has the ability to transform in the vicious Mongrel, a fearsome werewolf warrior. Michael’s powers were awakened during the events of the silver storm, but managed to resist Tellax’s mental effects that would have otherwise caused him to become a rampaging mutant. Previously a paramedic, Michael has found a new way to help the people of Emerald city.
Vortex:
When the downtrodden Matt McDonald realised the true extent of his powers he immediately set about a small crime spree, stealing and ransacking houses with his abilities to warp reality and call forth power from different dimensions. However, when news began to circulate of a new supervillain who could rob and steal without leaving any trace, he began to have his doubts. During a subsequent robbery, he was apprehended by Ultramarine and convinced of his wrongdoings. Veronica took him in and provided him with a roof and food. They eventually began dating. It was fortunate that both were on one such date when the silver storm began nearby…
