It's an alternate dimension. Colonists from another world, the Old World, England, Spain and other countries have settled in the New World and befriended the natives there. This is Salem, much larger than the historical Salem, with more danger lurking in the midsts. Witches are real, so are werewolves, vampires and other supernatural threats and even allies. Change He has settled California, and China already possesses some of the New World, so there will be other possible characters based on Chinese fable/folklore as well, the Spanish are to the South, as well.
There will be different characters during the witch trials, and things will be even more dangerous than the real world witch hunt. I might look up characters from the Crucible and add some of the original caste to this as well. There are Witch-Hunters, as well as Witches, and Vampire Slayers, etcetera, as I have said earlier. Providence is settled by the Quakers, a mysterious sect of Christianity that allows freedom of religion, in Rhode Island. . . You can go there if you end up persecuted.
For now though, you can play a Native, another member of a rival Colonial Power, one of the Puritans, and various races. You can be a villain, hero or walking the line, but you all must come to some agreement with one another to combat the invisible threat that is hunting both the mortal Humans and YOU, should you not be Human your'self.

Growing up as the third son to the Earl of Windholm, Chads chances were next to none that he would ever take the seat of Earldom once his Father had passed on, so Chad did what most Aristocratic young men did, spent his days travelling from country to country and spending his nights in wanton frivolity of wine, merriment and avaling himself upon the local peasant maidens. It was during one such trip the Chad and his friends came upon a band of Gypsys, whom seeing an opportuinity to earn (or steal) a gold coin or two, invited the wealthy young men into their camp. It wasnt long before the wine began to flow freely and with the singing and danceing of the exotic young gypsy girls taking on a fevered pitch, one particular sultry gypsy girl catching the eye of Chad. As the night wore on, intoxicated with wine and lust, Chad managed to slip away in to the woods with the sultry young gypsy maiden and forced himself upon her.
The next morning, battered and bruised, the gypsy girl ran back to her camp and told her people what had happened to her. They sought out and captured Chad, most of the band wanted him dead for what he had done to one of their own, but after all he was an Aristocrat, and they knew it would be their word against his and all knew which side the courts would be on. Chad realizing what he had done and knowing the public scandal this would cause his Father, attempted to buy the gypsy girls silence, offering is entire pouch of coin to the girl and her family. The Gypsy girls Grandmother, being a Gypsy Witch, took Chads offer of gold as a personal insult and stepped forward, taking the pouch from the girls Fathers hand and flinging it into Chads face and pronounced upon Chad an ancient gypsy curse which cuased her kin to look upon her in shock and upon Chad with utter fear.
Months later Chads friends began to die off, being found ripped apart and mauled in gruesome,qrotesque fashion, as if by a pack of wolves. The morning after the last of his friends had been ripped apart, Chad awoke to find himself naked and covered in blood,suddenly the final words of the Gypsy Witch after she spoke her curse upon him rang in his ears, " If thou wilst act with wolfish manners, then thou shalt a wolf be on the nights of the Moons fullness ". Frightened and scared, Chad spent the next several months trying to find the band of Gypsys he and his friends had spent the night with only to find out that shortly after that night, the Gypsy Witch had been accused of practicing witchcraft and burnt at the stake by a group of overly superstitious farming villagers.
Chad was now running out of places to hid, The Aristocratic families of his friends having learned that he was the only one left alive sent the Authorities after him, Chad knowing how this would disgrace and ruin his family decided the only thing to do to keep his Family from utter ruin, was to flee as far and as fast as he possibly could. Learning of ships full of Puritans leaving for the new world, he hurriedly made his way to the bank of London and withdrew all his inheritance then made his way to the docks, finding one of the Ships Captains and paying the man a very hefty sum of gold to stowaway on his ship. When the time came for the ships to leave, Chad went as far into the bowels of the ship and remained there for the entire voyage out of fear of what he might turn into during the long trip.
