Frustrated, Sarah groaned. “Addition—how do you run a kingdom without addition?” she shook her head. “Don’t you have taxes? Or a simple form of currency, for that matter? Do you even know what economy means?”

In all truth, she wished that she knew none of those things. The very deep, dark truth was that all she’d ever wanted was to live in this Labyrinth—the place that had kept her company in her dreams before she’d actually seen it. But, she was an adult now, and Jareth had tried to steal away her baby brother for a second time, and such a dream was out of the question.

Even though normal life had been so unpleasing and not for her, and did nothing but give her growing pains for something more.

Sarah sighed. “Look—I just want to get out of here and take my brother home,” she informed him. “I’m not leaving until I can take Toby with me.”

Then again, she wasn’t sure if he’d mind that; he’d given her the peach to run after him, after all.

"Oh, that. I learned little about it during the small amount of time I was summoned into your realm." Jareth said waving his hand as if it didn't matter. To him it didn't. For his power was the currency. The people either followed his rules or often suffered the consequences. "And I'm afraid he can't ever leave. I do think I forgot that small detail when I said that he was my heir." He said with a small cruel grin. "Oops."

Her eyes widened, and then her heart plummeted. That wasn’t what she’d been wanting to hear.

“What do you mean he can never leave?” she asked, her voice nearly failing her.

She’d find a way to dupe the system. She had beaten him once, and she’d do it twice; whatever cruel and unfair tricks he had up his sleeve, she was prepared for it, and would face it head-on.

A frown tugged at the corners of her lips, and despite the ever-scurrying goblins surrounding her legs, she took a small step forward. Her hands itched to be free of the bindings.

Then, her eyes narrowed. “I hope you know that whatever you’ve done, I’ll find a way to beat you. I’ve done it once, and I’ll do it again.”

After all, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

Jareth chuckles, the goblins sharing in the laughter theirs sounding crazy while his sounded way too amused but it didn't reach his cold eyes. "I am afraid you cannot beat me this time Sarah. He is like me, stuck here until someone wishes for him to arrive if I die because of this war. And, you're the only one that knows the words aren't you? But you have to be in your own realm to do it, and you said 'I will not leave here without my brother' if I am not mistaken. So...I believe we are at an impasse." He said with an elegant shrug. He watched her take that small step towards him and rose an eyebrow.

Her brain felt fried. This was the last thing she wanted to hear—forever was more than ‘not long at all’, and she had to find a way to get Toby out of this. One option for her was leaving and wishing for him there, but if he’d left a gateway back to the Labyrinth sitting on her pillow and even told her the parameters that could harm and help her, she doubted it’d be that easy.

Then, it hit her—war. He’d said it before, but it hadn’t nearly sunken in then like it did now. Her throat went dangerously dry.

Her pale green eyes drifted down and to the right, just like they always did when her mind was running with thoughts. She’d developed the trait when she’d been very young, and when her imagination and deep thinking had first begun to take flight.

As if something had clicked in her head, she snapped up to look at him. Initially, all she did was blink—but then, her eyebrows came loosened from their originally furrowed state, and her lips twitched with words readily on the surface.

“What happened to them?” she asked, and for a moment, her voice was tender and vulnerable. She’d tried to call on them so many times after she’d gotten home, but nothing ever happened. The spark wasn’t there, and it’d helped convince her that she’d been dreaming all along. “Hoggle, Sir Didymus, and Ludo—where are they?”

They couldn’t be fighting. While they’d proven how strong they all were, and she was well-aware of it, she couldn’t see them defending the Labyrinth against other very serious opponents. Had he punished them for helping her beat him?

Ah, that was the lugs name. He kept getting it confused. Jareth watched her expressive face. He had seen that expression while watching her navigate the walls her first time here. He had punished them for a short time, his anger hadn't been as explosive with them. If he had been in their place he would have done the exact same thing they did. But being King one had to punish when orders were ignored or disobeyed. "Hmm. Where indeed." He said as he stalked the room sitting in another throne. This one his own. The other had been for Toby when he had named the kid his heir. He knew exactly where they were. Ludo was helping rebuild the Labyrinth, Didymus was teaching the art of sword fighting while also trying to get his goblins to be more chivalrous. Hoggle was teaching the art of sneaking and running. He had given up his baubles but for the one that Sarah gave him. He could always send someone to fetch them. But he rather see Sarah squirm for a little bit.
