You should try playing a character that's the complete opposite of you. And can you really get away with more just by stating it is mature themed? How far can you go exactly? I hope this to be true *crosses fingers*

I think the most evil thing a character of mine has done, as a PC to another PC, was kidnapping their baby daughter and hiding her in a building that was burning down so he could go and convince the girl the aforementioned guy loved to get strung up for a crime I may or may not have commited. That one was fun.

Not just making characters cry in general, but a sadistic kidnapper holding hostage a damsel in distress and making her cry because her attempt on his life failed... It's complicated. I don't like making undeserving people suffer, that's the short version. I can make people cry, but I don't like to, so whenever I play any sort of villain I have difficulty making them really "evil" without feeling bad about it. Don't ask me why, 'cause I dunno. I can be bad, but I don't enjoy it.

Everyone has a "cannon" set of character personalities that they reuse and recycle in some way or another. Some of us prefer to play the good guy, some prefer to play the bad guy. I personally am on the pain and torment bus all the way. Not only do I like to make other player's characters die, I like them to die slowly (such as Ace's little torture scene.), but I am totally a gore whore.

I totally get the feeling of being out of your element though Clirkus. You can't play a bad guy without feeling guilt, but I can't play a sweet romantic without wanting to gag on self inserted razor blades. At the moment I have one character that could be considered good and even she is in possession of a cannibalistic child. (which is played by CaptainQ, omg, <3<3<3).

That's another factor when I create a character, I try to avoid the "bad childhood leading to messed-up adulthood" backstory because I see it too often, it's not really something unique or at least it doesn't seem that way. If I have to be a villainous character, I'm more likely to make them a "good-person-turned-bad" for whatever reason.

Do you know what is creepier than a sadistic murderer with a bad childhood? A sadistic murderer with absolutely no life experiences that should dictate deviant behavior. I like to make my murders well loved, well educated, happy narcissists. American psycho style. Or just demons. Demons don’t need excuses either.
