Cosette held Dietrich close. "I understand it must be a difficult answer. Being taught one thing, then questioning it later," She pressed her lips against his then sat up and pulled away. "Though please rememeber, my people are being mass murdered, by your people," Cosette looked down. She was so confused, what was she doing here with this man while her people were being murdered by his people. What would stop him from killing her, like he had probably done to others. One day she could upset him, and then disappear forever if he wished. It all didn't make sence to her. She stood up, grabbed her shoes and coat and ran to the door, "I'm so sorry Dietrich, I must go, I must," she ran out into the cod winter night.

See the safety of the life you have built. Everything where it belongs. Feel the hollowness inside of your heart. And it's all... Right where it belongs. What if everything around you. Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you think you know. Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection. Is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks? Would you find yourself... Find yourself afraid to see? What if all the world's inside of your head. Just creations of your own? Your devils and your gods. All the living and the dead. And you're really all alone? You can live in this illusion. You can choose to believe. You keep looking but you can't find the woods. While you're hiding in the trees. What if everything around you. Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you used to know. Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection. "No, wait, stay..." Dietrich didn't even get time to finish his sentence before Cosette had closed the door behind her. He was confused. One minute this woman was making love to him and then the next she was running out his front door as if they were complete strangers. Maybe they were strangers. Dietrich still knew very little about this woman except that she came from Poland and was supposed to be the enemy. She had been a brief distraction that had come into his life, deterring him from his duties. They never had to find out though, right? This has been one night and tomorrow morning I'll act as if nothing happened. I must, because the neighbours..." Again the image of his neighbours being arrested and taken away entered his head. They had been arrested for what was generally viewed as a more minor offense so it wasn't hard to imagine what his fate would be.

The sun beat in Dietrich's face as he woke up the next morning. He was up a bit earlier than usual, but in a couple hours he would be heading off anyway. It was back to being a Nazi. Questions ran through his head as usual about the past couple days. Would he ever be able to shoot anybody like nothing happened? Did the encounter with Cosette change him? Were Jews even the enemy? Nothing seemed to make sense now. Regardless he had a job to do unless he wanted to be shot even if that did seem like a desirable option right now. I'm already a traitor and should be struck down.

Dietrich laid in bed pondering many things, awaiting the passage of time. He knew it was time to face the world now so he got up and began to slip on his uniform, a uniform he felt he could no longer wear with pride. It had been tainted. He had been tainted. If he ran into Cosette today he feared there would be no hesitation to just get her killed or deported. "Don't let me down." he muttered to himself, working to convince himself in his mind that what he had experienced with Cosette was purely lust.

Cosette ran down the street with tears streaming down her face. She knew she could get in alot of trouble if she got caught after the set curfew for all others. The sound of her heels hitting the pavement echoed in the streets. She heard a guard yell from behind, then the sound of his boots running after her. Cosette ran as fast as she could, but then heard a loud boom scream in her ears. She fell onto the street grasping her leg, a red pool of blood forming on the ground. The guard ran up with a gun pointed at her face, "State your name!" He screamed. Cosette put her hands up in the air and whispered, "Cosette Svobeda". The guard flipped his gun and smacked her in the face with the butt of the gun. Falling back, her vision blurred. "For a Jew, your not half bad looking...You got a tight little body, hmmm.." The guard smiled harshly, then grabbed her good leg and dragged her into a dark alley. She closed her eyes as he had his way with her, then left her there naked, bleeding in the cold. Once he had left, she struggled to put her clothes back on, her leg still bleeding from the gunshot. Limping her way to the hospital, she collapsed 20 feet from the emergency room, then blacked out. The next day, she awoke in the hospital in a bed next to her grandmother's.

It wasn't until later that Dietrich heard the other soldiers bragging about their actions that day. The assault in the ally. The assault of Cosette. This pained him a little, but of course he wasn't in a position here to speak up about it. "Maybe she deserved it." he just responded hesitantly, playing back everything he had heard.

When Dietrich got off duty it occured to him that he had to see Cosette. It was the least he could do after their affair last night. This he really wanted to promise to be the last visit. He knew he couldn't grow too attached to this woman, especially not now.

"I just wanted to come see you. I heard what happened." Dietrich gave an explanation as he walked into Cosette's hospital room in full uniform. He hadn't bothered to go home and change as this was urgent. He now felt it probably would have been better too since it seemed she shared a room now with her grandmother. "I'm sorry about showing up like this..." He quickly apologized for his showing up in uniform. He was sure Cosette wouldn't appreciate seeing another of those.

Cosette was reading when Dietrich walked through the door and instantly apologized. She put her book down and turned the other direction, ignoring his remarks. She hadn't talked much since the attack, not even to her grandmother. It didn't help that he showed up in his uniform, the same uniform the other soldier had been wearing. Cosette felt empty, she reached up and touched the bruise on the side of her face from being hit with the gun. The gunshot wound was not as bad as she thought, but it was still difficult to walk. "How did you find out?" She asked dryly, sexual crimes were not plastered in the newspaper so he had to of heard from a soldier. "Why are you here?" She sat up and looked directly at him, anger in her eyes. He hadn't cared when she ran off confused and scarred of him, but suddenly he cared again. Why did he care so much? He had been taught to hate her, but somehow he kept showing up. Though, no one had ever cared for her like this, and a part of her longed for him to never leave her side. She moved to one side of the bed then motioned for him to come sit next to her.

"The soldiers. They were bragging about it, as if it were a huge accomplishment. I knew it was you too since your name was mentioned a few times." Dietrich responded to Cosette, realizing the awkward situation of him arriving in uniform. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have..." Maybe we're better off not seeing each other. Fate had brought them together and now fate would bring them apart. Both had very different lives and destinies that wouldn't allow them to be part of each other's.

Dietrich stood in awkward silence for a few seconds before speaking up again. "Should I just leave? You don't seem to keen on seeing me, but I can certainly understand why." Somehow Dietrich felt that part of this had been his fault and that he had to apologize for actions he wasn't even part of. Guilt of association; these were the exact people he was supposed to be part of.

Cosette shook her head and motioned again for him to come closer to her "No, please stay," she whispered. Though she didn't like seeing the uniform on him, she knew she had to get use to seeing it again. Nazi soldiers were all over the place, after all. She looked him in the eyes, "Don't be sorry". None of it really was his fault, she knew that and wanted to remind him. She stood, then limped towards him and wrapped her arms around him. The famililar feeling rose in her as she held him tighter. "Dietrich, please stay..." Cosette wanted to hold him forever, never letting go. The pain in her leg was horrible, but it was worth it just to hug him. A part of her wondered if he still liked her, after he knew she had been violated and was now unpure. Then again, if he believed in pureness, he wouldn't associate with a Jew.
