    Mount and Blade: Warband

    This game's pretty damned awesome.

I'm going to talk about it now, k? K.

So, did Tutorial, it didn't seem too hard ( except horse archery, fuck that shit... at first ) and then set about making a character

The process is simple and whatever, and it looks like it'd work well... except that you don't get to pick what type of weapons you start with. I'm not even saying ''start with best sword ever'', I'm saying ''I just put a lot of points into using a sword, can I please have one?''

First character was built to be good at archery and one handed weapons

Started with a crossbow and a lance. Two of my lower skill weapon types.

I tried again, and got crossbow once more, so I was like "Okay, I'll take a crossbow!"

Character ended up with only throwing axes.

    ...

So I kept making characters until I started with a weapon that wasn't stupid. Ended up as a noble woman, living in the Steppes.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Only problem was, I had like, no STR or AGI ( agility, instead of Dexterity ). My stats had favored INT and CHA. I tried to do some battles on my own while trying to recruit guys, but... it didn't work well. So I went into the Arena for some 'melee training'.

Now, when I think of Melee Fighting, I think of things like... you know, swords ( wooden swords ), and stuff. But the computer kept spawning guys with bows and arrows. How the hell are bows and arrows MELEE weapons?

    My basic reaction

Anyway, so I eventually got the hang of combat, gathered up some men, did the starter quest, before being recruited into some war by the marshal dude. I got a few more blokes, and we marched to where he was... which was engaged in a giant battle. I, knowing that I sure as fuck wouldn't be able to do well in it, just kinda circled it for a bit, waiting for stragglers. A small group, 3 units big ( smaller than my 10 or so ) broke off, so I went to battle against them. Won it handily... and ended up imprisoning the fucking enemy king.

I went to the slave traders, that I learned to use earlier, and tried to sell him to them. No dice. His last guards? They sold for some nice money, used it to get some mercs. Good stuff. But the king? Nope. I went to my Khan, and tried to see if I could give HIM the enemy king. I couldn't.

So I just rode around fighting bandits, dragging the king with me until the war ended. \o\

I slowly built up, got more and more things, until I finally captured my first enemy castle. I wasn't given it, however. Things got rolling and I joined the siege of a city, and another castle, and siege after siege I got better, trained my men, killed more blokes, amassed more money and more troops, until finally I solo'd a castle, taking it by force, and was given it. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Now my personal band is pretty well armed and trained, we just took out an enemy city by ourselves. We were outnumbered 2 to 1. In the end, my casualties were 1 killed, 15 wounded... their casualties were 281 killed, 1 wounded.

    This game... is so cool.

Heheh, I love Warband. The starting out stats determine what weapons you get, and though I always pour a lot of points into archery, I only ever get a crossbow. Doesn't slow me down too much though, because normally I'll end up with a sword or an axe, both of which I like, and after a few missions I'll have enough money to buy what I want, or else I'll find what I want in whatever loot I acquire.

The first time I captured an enemy king I had no idea what to do with him, turns out that you just gotta carry him around for a while and eventually the realm you're at war with will offer a ransom, same with any lord. You can turn it down, and the next one will be higher. But by doing that you lose honor and there's always the chance the war will end and you'll get nothing. Whenever I capture an enemy lord I let him go, because it makes my relation with him go up, which makes him more likely to do what want in the future (like defect to our side, or show me mercy in battle, or let me marry his daughter), I make a lot of "friends" that way.

My newest strategy is exporting my character (with all their skills and inventory) then starting a new game and importing them, which gives me a head start as well as the chance to try other things (like helping a claimant regain their throne). But yah, there's like a million things you can do, it's a great game.

Throwing was my lowest weapon stat, by about 30 points at least. Still made me start with only a throwing weapon.

I think it also depends on the character's backstory. For instance, if your father was a thief you're more likely to get knife-like weapons than if your father was a nobleman, you'd be more likely to get a sword or a lance. I was always a steppe nomad turned smith and upped one-handed-weapons and archery skills. I usually ended up with a crossbow and a sword, sometimes an axe. I've never gotten a polearm as a starting weapon.

I wish it just let you pick what type ;_; so much simpler. I went through like 10 guys before I started out with a weapon that I both liked, and was decently trained in.

Also, where's a good place to get a nice axe? I have a pretty damned good sword right now ( cost me thousands ), but I would prefer an axe. They get a bonus against shields, right?

Yup, axes have great bonuses against shields and are actually my preferred weapon now. If you're looking to buy an axe, the Nords make the best ones. Just go to any Nordic town (one of the original ones like Sargoth or Wercheg, if they've overtaken any other factions' towns, they won't have the same goods) and go to the weapons dealer. Or if you'd rather not pay for one, go fight some sea raiders along the Northern coast, they always drop great loot, usually swords and armor but sometimes there will be axes as well. Careful though, the sea raiders are the toughest outlaws and can be a real pain in the rear. They kill first and ask questions later.

    ... We're at war with the Nords ;_;

But that city I talked about taking? Was one of theirs... I think. It was theirs when we attacked. I'll check it out.

Also, Elendra, if you haven't gotten yet the Floris Mod is a must, it simplifies a lot of things and makes it more intuitive, not to mention it adds ports and boats. :3 All together it's a pretty awesome mod. It's what I'm playing with right now.
