Or any other social networking site where you might have your name or photo up. So basically don't exist online, which is becoming increasingly impractical. You can be an antisocial shut in, but the reality is most people have to use these things in their daily lives. Particularly people who are actively dating.

It's perfectly possible to exist online without trading your privacy

I said 'increasingly impractical' for precisely this reason. Of course it's possible. But for myriad reasons it just isn't an option once you're trying to build a career and a life.

You're 17, you'll have to hook in eventually.

Why exactly would that be, my career and life is not in any significant way impacted by my online status, I fail to see how the same would be true for anyone else

cracked.com is pretty much the driving force of why I quit Facebook. The horror stories I heard from there was enough to make up my undecided mind to get the hell off of that giant privacy sink.

A special thanks to Vanquished for the sig!

Someone in business, marketing, law, etc. Really anywhere you need to build connections to find a good job, or get the job you apply for. Being a salesman and/or entrepreneur are two particularly crucial examples. It's very difficult without connections, which are built through social networks more and more. If you're dating and having social outings with a group you need it. I realize RPG is a magnet for introverted personality types and most of these things involve extroverted activities, but even introverts face these issues. Is it possible? Defo. Are there exceptions? Clearly. Is it easy and would it work for a majority of people? Nope.

If you're in school still then this doesn't matter as much just yet. It could for internships or scholarships--or if you're particularly sexually active, but those are somewhat optional. If you need to make a good impression and have some way to be vouched for, it could be a big roadblock.

If you're a loner, in school, in a hard-science department then you can skate by for a few years longer. And, obviously, this doesn't apply to you.
