    Final Fantasy XIII: Tainted Fal'Cie

Juliana climbed atop a crystalline structure as she saw a post-fall vehicle reside on the bottom of the drop off she now stood on. It was one of the new type of machines that the old Guardian Corps, now renamed to Guardian Command with the combination of the Guardian Corps and PSICOM branches, used when their personnel went on patrols. Other than that, Juliana knew nothing else of the motorcycle-like machine. However, she knew one thing, she was going to take it back to Bresha whether it liked it or not.

Ever since the fall, technology had been reduced to nothing but what was used within the great exodus. The best tech was the simplest tech that the citizens were used to on Cocoon. Though some weapons and vehicles did remain, it still wasn't enough to keep the monsters away from the settlements. It was a rough initial months as many had perished to the harsh life on Gran Pulse leaving on the strongest to suffer and struggle.

Juliana swept back her black hair as she tucked it neatly within the back of her shirt. She had been wearing a repurposed scavenger suit that was a hybrid between a Guardian and PSICOM suit. The uniform was still civilian style however, for the more protective and better quality still went to the guards that patrolled the settlements. Scavengers needed protection too she thought to herself as she began to lower herself down to where her prize resided.

"Whatcha find there Juliana?" shouted a voice as a boy - barely out of his teens - peered over the side and whistled. "Now that's find indeed. Need help?"

Juliana landed on the ground with an umph as she shouldered her rifle across her back. She tilted back her helmet's visor as she saw her green eyes reflect back at her, a beautiful emerald against the metal hull. "Think we'll get an extra commission for bringing this back? It still seems to be in one piece." She looked into the cockpit and felt her hopes plummet. "It'll need a lot of maintenance though ... Wonder if they have the parts back in Bresha."

A pair of footsteps drew nearer. Voss was her partner's name. He leaned in and inspected the inside and sighed. "Must need a host of new hardware. No way it'll run like that." He tried his radio. "Bresha Command, Scavenger team Zeta reporting. We've found an obsolete with potential. Requesting a heavy mover, over."

The static crackled within his ear piece until a gruff voice responded. "Location, over."

"Zone 26." Voss took a look at this gps watch. "Sector 22, line 31, over."

"Confirmed. Heavy Mover's been dispatched. Stand by for arrival, out."

    Voss shrugged. "Hear that?"

Juliana wasn't listening. She had already began to study the machine and begin a preliminary report that could possibly help expedite the Mechanics restoration process. "The Hanger's going to have a field day on this." A shrill howl erupted from the distance that made her stop what she was doing. She eyed Voss who had already drew his rifle. She armed herself and stood next to him and lowered her visor. "When was the Heavy getting here?"

    "Not sure ... Thirty?"

The cry was still distant but came closer. Juliana tightened her grip on her rifle as she gulped. She felt her skin prickle with unease as she scanned the cliffs. "Denizens coming out." She checked her watch and felt her stomach lurch. "It's not night fall yet. They shouldn't be active."

"Early dinner?" suggested Voss. "They don't always have to stay to schedule, right?"

She adjusted the weapon in her hands as her eyes still searched. "They better get here quickly," Juliana said as she say movement on the cliffs. "East cliff."

    "Got it."

    "Get ready."

    "Maybe they'll just leave?"

"... As if," she responded. "Don't wish for the impossible, Voss. Get ready."

Braska was a forsaken wasteland. A world of ice, as though the realm were home to the Shiva twins. The frozen ground crunch under each boot step, as tiny crystals of ice shattered with each step. The world was crystalline blue and white, without vegetation, without vibrance or color, except when one comes across the location of a fiend’s feeding ground; then the darker shades of blood can be seen, tainting the purity of Braska. A day ago, Wedge had come across the first of these grounds, luckily the lone sentry they’d left behind wasn’t in a particularly observant state when Wedge found him, making dispatch that much simpler. He followed the pack, keeping his distance so that if the wind changed direction, his scent wouldn’t carry to them, always keeping weary for any scouts that drop back to guard the pack’s flank. Smart ones, these beasts… but they never seemed alarm when their sentries never return. Ever onward, drawing closer to the stated position of the new settlement of Bresha.

In the natural still of the wild, the shifting of rock down the surface of a drop was a call for alarm that could quickly be released to the idea of natural phenomena, but it was the shifting of stones that drew Wedge’s attention. He neared the ridge, peering over to see two individuals standing around a fallen machine. The sound he had noticed wasn’t loud enough to account for the descent of the bike, nor did he hear any tones akin to electric motor. No, they had not ridden the bike down the drop but must have scaled the plummet in order to reach the machine: Scavengers, more than likely.

He was getting ready to move on, stepping away from the ridge’s western face, to continue circling around towards the east, when he heard the chirp of a radio, the loud voice of mechanic communication, fixed with static, echoing unnaturally through the quiet stillness of the frozen waste. The sound made Wedge physically wince, not out of pain from noise, but knowing that they had just inadvertently given their position away to a rather active pack of hunters.

He could just leave them to their fates. It didn’t concern him. He wasn’t here on some humanitarian mission to rescue foolish people from their acts, but to search for a relic long forgotten, fabled to be somewhere in the area. Wedge peered back over the edge of the drop, visibly taking stock of the pair from a distance. The woman bore a rifle, and though perhaps it would do come good at distances, once the beasts closed quarters with her, it would prove clumsy and difficult to manage. The other, a mere lad.. if he did have a weapon, it seemed as though it would offer little protection. If the pack was nearly as large as he had feared, they’d be slaughtered, there beside the metallic hull of their treasure, to stain frozen ground with brilliant, crimson blood.

Wedge didn’t suffer fools gladly, and yet, he’s seen enough slaughter in the past few months of travel to serve for a life time, and as he saw the moment of the pack crowning the eastern ridge, he moved into action. His hands pulled the two blaze fire saber’s from his hips, quick flicks of his wrists sending the blades unfolding to either side as his feet caught the steep slope of the drop. The balancing was a feat of strength, as he allowed his booted feet to skid down the frozen ground, rushing him at a steep angle down the western incline towards the pair of combatants, to join the fray.

They come,” He shouted, more to give alert to his own descent down the great bowl’s side than to alert them of what they already knew. He would be a sight to behold. A rather large, well built man standing nearly six feet, with raven black hair down to his shoulders. His clothing the same tone of color, black against the brilliant ice and crystal of Lake Braska, with a metallic sheen about his chest, forearms and shins telling of a light but durable armor. A warrior by appearance, with twin blades, unfolding to either side.

A growl, and the man reached the base of the bowl, thick, black cloak settling down around him as he looked to the east, then heavy, dark green eyes lay upon the woman and her companion. Strangers whom he’d never before laid eyes upon, who a moment ago he had considered to simply leaving to their ill luck. The boy didn’t seem much more to him up close than he had at a distance, but Wedge knew that appearance were often fooling. The woman perhaps more capable than he had given her at a distance.. perhaps.

If you survive, I’ll have your names after..” he spoke to any question that may have been attempted in the moment before battle, to stop any foolish outburst of surprise or outrage. He stepped forward, setting a scrimmage line a good three paces before the pair, obviously intending to take the front, and act a wall against the onslaught. Dark eyes stare at the east, as twin blades anxiously tick at the frozen, crystalline earth below…

A thunder of many paws grew louder from the east as Juliana and Voss stood at the ready with both their weapons drawn. She never expected to have an encounter out here, for the patrols had always reported Zone 26 to be a border between a blue and yellow zone. There were some sightings of monsters within this area occasionally, but never had there been reports of them coming before night fall. Something must have changed to make them change their habits. Or Voss could be right, who said these beings had to follow what the new species had set for them. She'd have to report this as well - if she survived that is.

    "Nervous Jules?"

She tried to keep calm, but her heart thundered with great speed. "You aren't? My outings haven't been graced with encounters such as these. My group would go and survey around, find things, tag them, see if they can be salvaged, and bring them back."

"You know how to use that right?"

Juliana rolled her eyes as her visors lenses zoomed in as tall figures stood at the cliff's edge. "All Guardian and Scavenger personnel must complete basic before duties begin," she quoted as she stabilized herself. The rifles, though refined, had quite the kick. Don't ground yourself and your bullets would spray everywhere. She learned that one the hard way. "See them? There has to be at least a dozen."

Voss nodded as he looked up. His voice was shaky when he spoke. "Can we really do this?"

"We can't run. They'd catch us."

With her full concentration trained on the pack looking down upon them, Juliana never noticed the approaching stranger until she heard a deep voice shout towards her and Voss. She looked over as she saw a man dressed within dark clothes. He had raven black hair and beautiful green eyes. He carried two blaze edge's within his hand, which made her eyebrow shoot up. The only time she had seen a gun blade was with High General Farron. Those types of weapons, and she knew this for a fact, were disturbingly rare to find after the fall. She made a note to ask the after they had dealt with the crowd that were now quickly descending down the eastern slope.

"And I'll ask for your name as well," she replied to him. Be it stupid and foolish, she didn't care. She noted that he took the front, which was fine with her. She and Voss would pick the attackers off from a far while he kept them at bay. "Voss. Your safety is on."

She heard a click as she sighed in exasperation. "Thanks."

"Don't forget that in the future."

The thundering of running feet got louder as Juliana stepped up and rested the rifle against her shoulder and sighted the things. They were hairy creatures that resembled feral wolves. Their massive paws slashed and scarred the crystallized surface that that the hunted on. huge yellow eyes stared hungrily at the three as the beasts roared in defiance at those who dare resist against them. Not only did their fierceness show, but their towering bulky frames undulated as they ran, their fur moved in waves.

When they drew nearer, Juliana took a deep breath as she sighted her target. Her visor zoomed in and her finger tightened around the trigger. As the wolves were finally upon them, she squeezed the trigger as the rifle in her hand roared alive. The staccato of the chamber rocked back and forth as shells began to litter the ground to her right. She heard another rifle roar to life as Voss had also joined in.

The beasts were dropping but not as fast as she'd hoped. She switched between targets as she saw their purple blood splatter the cerulean blue of Lake Bresha, forever tainting the sparkling beauty. A pained howl screeched in the air as a wolf fell, but the others quickly took its place. "Hey!" she shouted towards the man. "Show us what you can do with those!"

She quickly ejected her spent clip and slammed a fresh one into the ammo slot. She tried to pick off another wolf, but now it was too near. She gazed in horror as it lunged for the man. "Watch out!"

Wedge stood patient, watching the two machineguns cut into the charging beasts. He heard the reverb of the repetitive explosions launching bullets from casings, through the long barrels to slice through the flesh of beast. He saw the blood splatter, saw as the first beast fell under the onslaught of bullets, and still he waited, ticking at the ground with the tips of his twin blades. He watched with a calm fury as the beasts drew nearer, and as the sounds of bullets ceased, and the glorious sound of thundering feet drew nearer, louder, Wedge rose both swords up, crossing them over his chest in quick salute, a grin sliding across his lips.

    “Watch out!”

The words spurred Wedge into motion, and in a single move of lightening speed, he twists his wrists so that the cutting edge of both blades faced his target. The beast lunged, leaving itself vulnerable in the air as it’s anticipation of the kill got the best of him, and in the moment before impact, Wedge sliced powerfully with both blades, crossing the beast’s body with a deadly, precise cross stroke that tore through fur and flesh, rent cartilage and bone. The blades cleared the beast in one fell swoop, and effortlessly, Wedge spun out of the way of falling assailant, who, when it impacted the ground jarred the tiny bits of flesh left knit, and simply broke into a squirming, bleeding mass of fur and purple blood.

Wedge didn’t look back, but already was running forward. His grip on the swords changed, as his right hand led, sword held in a reverse grip, while his left arm trailed. Into the fray he charged, letting go a fierce scream to rival those of attacking fiends, as though partially fiend himself. He hit the skirmish line, and immediately the blade in his left hand came forward, across his body to slice at the snapping jaws of one beast, blade biting painfully into skin and bone. Beasts whined, screamed in anguish, in terror, in fury. Their claws tore at his flesh as his blade rent theirs. Bodies began to build up, falling at his feet, broken, mangled forms, stained purple in their own blood, dotted crimson with his own.
