Don't really have a top ten, because I haven't found ten anime worth listing in a top ten list.
1. FMA. <- Classic, not brotherhood. I know it deviated from the manga. I liked that. It hit a nice balance of comedy and darkness that made me care about the characters without being all "IT ALWAYS SUCKS AND EVERYTHING DIES! *Slit wrists*"
2. Robotech: The Macross Saga. <- Painfully cheesy? Yep. Very, very painfully cheesy... Yet it had a certain charm to it that I just can't explain. Just... Do yourself a favour and watch this one with Japanese dubs and English subs. Save yourself the pain I had to go through. Just do it.
3. Blue Gender. <- The English dubs were better than the Japanese original VA work. Also, plentiful violence, several sexual innuendos, and exploration of what makes us human with a pretty well done love story between two interesting protagonists... But the ending sucks ass.
4. Code Geass. <- Normally it would be higher because the English VA work is great and the plot of the first season is to die for... Then the second season went FUBAR in several places. It was still enjoyable, don't get me wrong, just, in hindsight... I kinda wish they didn't do the second season.
5. Cowboy Bebop. <- Anybody who doesn't have this on their top ten list should be sentenced to death. Love it or hate it, it's worth watching just to know what it is.
6. Sword of the Stranger. (2007) <- Technically a movie, but worth adding to this list if you are curious about Japanese culture, because that will give you a pretty good sampling of it in a well developed film. A little predictable at points, but the fight scenes are pretty. Seriously you could probably do a cultural study on this film. Just make sure to watch the Japanese dub, or you'll die a little inside watching the English VA's and translations fuck up the themes.
