26. Enrolled in the university at the age of 15. Graduated at the age of 23.
Giles has a natural wonder and curiosity of things, which can sometimes cause him to be absent minded or over think things. He tries to create subtle solutions for problems, rather then flashy ones, through the enchantment of items. Giles is a generally shy, but friendly person, and tries to not draw attention to himself. However if angered, Giles may begin to act irrational and may do stupid things.
Giles was born in a crime ridden town, far from the university, where magic was viewed with distaste. Very little practiced the art of magic, and those who did where outcast. His family felt the same way about magic so when he one day discovered his talent by accidentally moving a pebble without touching it, he kept it hidden from everyone. He figured that as long as he didn't use it, it would be as if he didn't have it. Unfortunately, he soon realized that his curiosity and wonder for magic where too strong for him to fight and he found a mentor in an old man who had once studied in the university. The man was hated by the majority of the townsfolk, but never the less he stayed there to be near his wives grave. When Giles approached the man, he was ecstatic to have a young pupil just as Giles was to have someone to teach him.
Knowing that he couldn't meet the man out in the open, once a week Giles donned a hooded coat and snuck out to the mans home, where he would learn the Other and how to control the flow of energy between it and himself. He took particular interest in the art of enchantment, thinking it a subtle way to use magic. He figured that if he could master enchantment, maybe he would be able to use magic without any one finding out. His mentor taught him all he knew about enchanting, and loaned him books that Giles masqueraded as novels. He poured over every word, devouring the knowledge like a starved wolf. When he felt himself ready, Giles stole a small silver ring from his home and enchanted it. He gave it a property of stealth. Whenever he wore the ring, whoever looked upon Giles would see him as a bland, non memorable man so long as they didn't see him put the ring on or bring attention to himself. It works by bending some of the light around the wearer, causing him to look different. He used it mostly for stealing petty things, like an apple or some parchment.
Soon after creating the ring, he realized that he could use it for so much more. He despised the state of his town. Every day he would hear of a mugging or murder. He decided that he should use his magic to combat the criminals of his town. Every night thereafter, Giles patrolled the town with his hooded coat keeping him from being recognized. Whenever he noticed or heard something shady, he would investigate and use the kinetic form of magic to stop crimes from being committed, and then slipped away from attention with his ring. Not once was his identity revealed, and so his thirst for knowledge grew.
One night during patrol, Giles heard a scream erupt from an alley. He ran to find the source, only to find his mentor being attacked by a group of young men. He recognized them as local haters of magic, and among them was his brother. These men were notorious for their desire to completely eradicate magic from their town. In a fit of rage Giles threw the men back through sheer kinetic force, but not before his mentor was stabbed in the heart. While running to the old mans aid, his hood was thrown back revealing his face. When he got to his mentors side, he was already dead. Giles ran from the alley, straight for his home, his brother shouting his name as he ran. Giles packed his belongings and fled. After months of wandering from city to city, Giles decided to enroll in the University for magic, wishing to continue his studies of magic and enchantment.
After finishing his studies, Giles left the university to practice in the mountains with a group of monks who devoted themselves to study of the Other. While there, Giles created a plethora of enchanted items including reusable a small explosive filled with various restrained chemicals that Giles can release to have various effects like a smoke, gas, or regular explosion bomb (he may use certain chemicals within the explosive, and not others. In the form of a small ball), a dagger that can slice through the thickest steel by making itself slightly denser than whatever it's cutting, and a key that can open any lock by shaping itself to the form of the keyhole. Although he has made many new enchanted objects, he still holds onto and uses the ring he made so long ago as a child.
While studying, the monks that Giles studied with figured him worthy to be taught a technique they used to become closer to the Other. This synchronization allows the magic used to be more potent, but requires meditation. When Giles tried this, he saw the Other for the first time in all of its indescribable beauty. It was only after meditating that they informed Giles of certain side effects that came with it. They warned him about visions he may have if he oversteps his boundaries with the Other. Not caring much for this, Giles continued his meditation, and ignored the visions that came with it. He didn't really mind, as they were small things, like a something he would see in the corner of his eye, or a buzzing noise without a source. He continues meditating to this day.
