Spam. Help Me Build a RP.

I would totally post this in interest check or something but I'm not positive I'm going to actually enact this RP, because honestly I am the worst GM ever. But I want to build the RP's universe because...well because it's in my head and it's going to bother me until I have it written down. So to make things go quicker, I want a little help from you guys. Because you may be crazy fucks, but you are creative fucks as well.

Let's set a little background here:

    SciFi Genre
    Earth is Dying
New Habitable Planet is discovered within traveling distance (FTL drives will be incorporated)

See I'm having no issue with building the planet. It's pretty much unraveling all on it own in my head, but I'm having trouble...literally getting there. I just can't seem to decide on a plot for getting to the planet. It's like something in the corner of my eye. Every time I turn around it's gone. I don't want it to take decades to get to the planet because I want the characters I create to be able to leave Earth and get to the new planet without aging to much or having to "time skip" ahead to the future and make new characters altogether.

I was thinking of exploring a stargate system kind of thing, not completely ripped from the franchise but a similar version, but that wouldn't take much time at all to reach the planet, and I don't want that part of the RP to go by too quickly (if I actually do get around to doing it).

    So Spammy...<3 Halp?

Shut up Zed. Like I said, I'm not even sure I'm going to make the actual RP but I just need it out of my head. It's in there and it's driving me crazy.

Why wouldn't they do cold sleep to get there? It's an insane waste of resources/energy as well as a huge risk to the mission itself to have everyone awake during a long mission. With hibernation they could keep their age and not have to change as characters.

The only way to use stargates or tech in that realm is to include aliens (if that's part of your plot), or to give some background on them having launched an apparatus to be the gate on the other end.

I would suggest you read the first Coyote book by Allen Steele. It's very similar to what you're talking about, and it's a fun read. It could help give you ideas.

See I thought about hibernation but I want the first half of the RP to be about going to the planet, and I don't want to have to create an entire new set of characters for life on the new planet.

I've been thinking that either I'm going to do the RP with the very first colony going to the planet or have it already colonized some and just start the RP on the planet. I'd really prefer the former, but if I can't figure out a better way then I'll do the latter.

What would you want to be RPing during the journey?

In the book the structure is: setting up the characters in the launch. How they end up there, world info, etc. Then in the ship they're all asleep except one guy to run things who is accidentally woken up by his chamber malfunctioning. After his story is over, it's them landing on the planet to kick off the plot.

You just have to think about what you're trying to accomplish--with specifics. Feel free to ask me, I've loved the concept of space colonization for years and read toooooooons about it.

They get to the planet. See a blue police box. Freak out. Everyone dies. It's a moffat plot.

made by the ever charming and talented Lillian Thorne.

It really depends on the speed that Earth is dying in. Did they have mere months before the Earth imploded/exploded/dematerialized/turned barren or did they have several years notice before everything went to hell? If they only had a short amount of time, it could be like this. In a frantic, panicked state, the current authorities and research centers built something to ensure the survival of humanity, may it be a huge ship to house as many humans as possible or several ships spread over the world.

Ofcourse, due to the limited time they had, most of the ships had terrible faults in them, causing them to explode upon launch or be slung off course after it. Only one or two ships (with our protagonists/characters on them) make it to said planet, only limited resources (due to most of the supply ships also having vanished) available to make this place their new home. Considering that you said you didn't want them to age too much and this is the sci-fi genre, you could add to it the availability of stasis pod, suspending life as it were. While less important characters stay awake (and as such, will age. Their story could be described and/or played while the remainder of the fleet makes it to the planet.), the main protagonist and several other key npcs will wake up like they were the day they were scrambled into the stasis pods to get the flying fuck off of the dying planet.

Ofcourse, the time traveled solely depends on how advanced you want technology to be.

Possibly cliche but also possibly stupid ideas:
    • Faster than light travel that goes full herpderp and takes your people X-hundred/thousand light years in like 2 months
    • Generic time skip with no real explanation of the mechanisms of travel (sort of a deus ex machina)

    Possibly cliche but workable ideas:
    • Warp drive
    • Stargate
    • Ancient alien travel tech (such as Mass Effect relay things)
    • Wormholes
    • Cryogenic Stasis with ship on autopilot, crew arrives as exact same age and condition as they were when frozen
    • Cryogenic Stasis with sacrificial pilot crew, rest of crew wakes as they went in the freezer
    • Cryogenic Stasis with pilot/maintenance crew getting woken up once every few years to check shit out and make sure all is well, these guys aged a bit but others not

Possibly not cliches but who the fuck knows ideas:
    • Make the planet relatively close, such as being in orbit around one of the nearby stars that could be reached in a relatively short time even with reasonable FTL tech
    • Magitech that defies the laws of physics by giving super speed travel
    • Magical teleportation that instantly gets you there
    • Magical travel through another realm/plane/universe that has altered laws of reality (somehow no hindrance to travel speeds, space works differently such that there is less of it while containing all the same stuff, something like that) to allow faked quicker movement via quickly getting to your destination then warping back to 'reality'
    • The above but explained with sci-fi stuff letting you to go an alternate universe
    • Time travel taking the ship back to the very, very early universe when it was way smaller and thus quicker to get through then getting to the spot in space coordinates where your planet will be in the future and traveling forward to an appropriate time such that you're back in roughly modern day right by your chosen planet (troublesome because why not travel back in time to prevent Earth dying?)

And that's all I can think of at the moment.
