Capable of forming its own thoughts and making its own decisions on its actions, regarding less to instinct and more to higher thought. Should it reach those, then I see no reason why it shouldn't be held to our idea of right/wrong or ethics.

They're vegetables. Hardly people. They aren't held to the same standard anymore because they can't do anything without assistance. Its our own sense of ethics and such that lead us to treat them as people still and care for them.
