Pax Britannica and the Undead (OOC)

    Interest Check: http://roleplayerguild.com/showthrea...and-the-Undead

The head came off easily. But her dead sunken eyes lingered in my mind, even after I smashed her head in.

We call them 'it'. We were supposed to. They weren't human after all, just animals infected with a disease.

But how could anyone think that way? They still wore what they had before they turned. Peasants, soldiers, nobles, artisans... all one and the same. Just a dead hunger in their eyes and a moan from their mouths. But they were human once. And every single one of them had a story before they died. I'm killing sick people. We had to do that to survive. But how can anyone live in a world like that?

Holy Mary... I can't take this anymore. I'm so sorry.

God save the king. That is all we can expect.

June 17th 1818AD, Journal of LCpl. John Welch.

    ------

Basically a zombie apocalypse setting during the year 1817. Recovering from the chaos of the Napoleonic Wars, England, France and the rest of the continent did not expect a sudden outbreak of a strange disease. A successful quarantine was instituted, but it was after the victims' deaths did the situation make itself truly apparent.

The victims rose from the dead and attacked the living, turning them into undead monsters. Spreading like wildfire from the coast of Normandy to Portugal, from Sicily to even Novgorod, only England, Africa, Asia Minor and the icy reaches of Russia and Scandinavia survived the dead uprising.

    Some details:

    • We're set in the early 19th century Europe! We're going to have to change some of our cultural views!
    • It's not all about being invincible and killing hordes of zombies.
    • There might be survivor communities in mainland Europe. How they survive, it's up to you.
    • There might be magic, might not be. If there's magic, certainly nothing flashy, and generally low-key enough to be rationalised away.

    ----

    Some questions to deal with:

    1. Zombie is a word that only popped up in common use during the 20th/21st century. What shall we use as a term to refer to those flesh-hungry undead monsters?
    • Shambler
    • Walker
    • Walking Corpse
    • Or other possibilities?

    2. Intelligent undead or magic? Your views on whether we should have any? I'm quite in favour of them, but if you dislike them, I can agree.

And so the tale of the slightly insane woodsman begins.

    Name: Gottfried Holtzmann

    Age: 38

    Country of Origin: Germany

    Appearance:

    Fame:

The Holtzmanns have kept to themselves for generations, preferring the solitude of the forest more than the ever-growing cities. Consequently, they are not a clan of great notoriety. Indeed, only a handful of people -- those being, fellow woodsmen and a number of traders in Hamburg -- are generally aware of their existence. Encounters with the Holtzmann clan are generally pleasant as long as they do not involve poaching.

    Talents:

Gottfried primarily made his money by hunting deer and selling venison and pelts before the plague began. He is an experienced woodsman, possessing many tricks of the hunting trade, most notable among them marksmanship and tracking. He is also adept at most aspects of carpentry, having built his family's home more or less by himself.

    Misc:

The plague struck while the Holtzmann clan was in Hamburg doing business. The dense population distribution made odds of survival drop greatly. Gottfried's family did not survive -- they were mauled right in front of his eyes. The mental effects of this are noticeable; Gottfried suffers bouts of depression regularly, and occasionally becomes engulfed in delusions.

    ====================================

I'm not really satisfied with this quite yet; it looks jumbled to me. I'll edit it later, but this is the base, so assume the final product is at least similar.

    (Can I join?)

    Name: Pierre Dubois

    Age: 20

    Country of Origin: Belgium

    Appearance: (lulz)

Fame: Pierre's known for being one of the most talented and young engineer in Belgium, supporter of the Industrial revolution in Europe.

Talents: He's not known for nothing. He's a talented mechanic and mathematician. He learns fast, and is collaborative.

Misc: He was in Siberia completing a business while the disease emerged. He's now trapped in the most cold part of Russia, with supplies for a couple of weeks, basic tools, and some materials.

(It's not really finished yet, I'll complete when more ideas come to my mind).

Name: Sir John Darley or Mr Darley
    Age: 31
    Country of Origin: Great Britain
    Appearance:
Fame: Mr Darley is mainly known as an estranged, wealthy aristocrat amongst the gentry of Britain. Darley has always kept to himself, isolated up in his large country manor out in the wild dales of Yorkshire with his servants.
Talents: As an aristocrat Mr Darley has few practical skills. He is well read and a skilled writer and artist. However, he is a keen horse rider and has a good aim after years of casual pheasant hunts. Sir John Darley’s most important asset is his comparatively large wealth.
Misc: Despite Britain being relatively safe from the plague that has encompassed europe. Darley makes a point of carrying four pistols on him at all times and has well supplied his house and servants with musketoons and cutlasses, for the countryside of England is no longer a safe place, banditry abounds.

Like the others, this cs is WIP

The sand of the desert is sodden red, --
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; --
The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks:
'Play up! play up! and play the game!'

    Josette Brodeur
    22
    France
    Appearance:

Talents: She is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who once shipped goods from all over the continent and beyond until the war ended that. She had been pampered, allowed to go to school and study art. She is a naturalist by hobby, drawing and categorizing plants is her favorite past time. As she studied this she learned about herbalism from the old wives of the countryside and soon became proficient in their uses. Most of it has a practical purpose but from some of the crones she learned of protective amulets and other things that would be considered witchcraft. She indulged the women and did not take it seriously until the outbreak of living dead came and she began to wonder they were right all along.

Misc: Her father and her younger brother have survived so far. She has had practice with a pistol but dislikes the complexity, preferring to use saber picked up from a dead soldier for self defense.

(I might add some more later but that is what I have now, I hope it's acceptable)

Sail away where no ball and chain
Can keep us from the roarin' waves
    Together undivided
    But forever we'll be free

    Sail away aboard our rig
The moon is full and so are we
    Seven drunken pirates
    We're the seven deadly sins

But it's the only life we'll know
    Blagards to the bone
So don't wreck yourself, take an honest grip
For there's more tales beyond the shore
