Hello contest people, both those who entered and those who are only voting. I'm the new third manager of the Writer of the Month contest, joining Kagamine and Brovo in helping run things smoothly for you folks. Thanks for your participation and giving us work to do, you select few who write entries and vote on them are the lifeblood of the contest.

To those who have entered the contest, you are encouraged to read the other entries, perhaps vote on one of them, and to give your fellow entrants critiques. Just remember that you cannot vote for your own entry and that you must maintain anonymity if you wish to give reviews; either keep the secrecy by giving your own entry a decoy review along with the real ones or by waiting until after voting closes and the winner is announced to put them up. I'm sure you folks entered, at least in part, to receive such critiques; why not be kind to the other entrants and give them your thoughts on their work? Speaking of critiques, I'll be giving my own for all entries after the winner is announced. Hopefully I won't hate my life for committing to reviewing 22 total entries in this short time, but we'll see.

Good luck to everyone who entered. There are plenty of quality stories this month, may the best one win.

Did you know we have a Writer of the Month contest? Come join it.
WOTM #26: Evil Wins is open and accepting entries through June 4th.

Voted for The Maplewood Box. I liked it, could see the potential in the piece but I wish there was more to the box itself than a simple distraction. You could really have gone to town on the idea, stretching the concept until it was a grander tale, almost on a Brothers Grimm level. Couple of other small gripes:

    • In the future, I'd recommend reading dialogue aloud to yourself. If it sounds right, sounds true then keep it. If not then try to rework it a little. I like that you tried to put an accent into the dialogue but some of it sounded quite alien, like a future historian trying to imitate a liverpudlian.
    • I'd advise against using 'suddenly' in the future. I get that you're trying to indicate the speed or, well, suddenness of an action but in the words of a literary agent whose blog I was reading a little while ago: "Everything happens suddenly in a story."
    • Adverbs. This goes for some of the other entries (off the top of my head: Gollum's Villainy) adverbs break the flow of a narrative. They're the tool of nervous writers who struggle with the fear that what they're trying to convey won't be understood by the reader. You can get around this by tweaking the context of a situation. "John slammed the door loudly" is worse than "John slammed the door" if the reader knows that John had just been in an argument or something like that

On the plus side you set up the environment throughout the story quite well. Whilst there were things I liked about some of the other entries (Gollum's Villainy had a lot of potential but I didn't really feel it. Something about the delivery just didn't excite me as much as the title and what I imagined the story would be did. If the author of the piece wants me to explain in full then they can PM me once the voting is over) the others didn't have that fullness to the world around the characters. I was actually aware of the peddlers wagon, instead of it existing as a simple prop in the story. It had colour, there was animation and life in the other characters.

    So, yeah, good job

    A massive [2].

As I further explained in the Casual voting thread, the more entrants we have in a contest, the less likely we'll have a sufficient amount of votes and reviews. Sadly, all I can do is point this out to you and encourage entrants to be active voters and reviewers, as well. I understand the logic behind not wanting to help a competitor, but, please, be a good sport and help out your fellow entrants as well as the contest as a whole. In fact, if you really want to avoid voting for a competitor, go vote on a Casual entry! Zero disadvantage to voting in the Casual contest. Likewise I should probably tell them to vote for you guys.

Also, I added a note pointing out that Gollum's Villainy is based off of Lord of the Rings, for those of you who already read it not knowing.

Like I said in the Casual thread. . . my reviews are scattered, because I'm used to writing directly on the story/paper itself. In the margins, as it were. Anyway, here we go!

Hmm. I'm having trouble deciding between Lost Hope and the Maplewood Box. The former was nice and dark, while the latter was more vivid in it's story telling. However, I think I'll have to go with the box. While I liked the idea of Lost Hope more, The Maplewood Box was a better example of good writing and storytelling overall.

Something I found interesting is that (barring the last three Advanced entries); I tended to prefer the Casual entries to these ones. As can probably be seen by the feedback I gave.

I will assume the ones reading my comments about each review has read the entries beforehand. As such, there will be spoilers.

… And that’s about that. DONE. I’m done with this for this month. Now I just wait for the rest to do their work.

So, in a total so far we've received 21 votes on this WOTM. 15 on Casual and 6 on Advanced

... Can we get a single more vote? It would be so perfect if we got 22 voters as well as 22 entries in WOTM #22! It isn't that much! Just... one more, please~! Just one? A tiiny-tweeny vote?

Of course, we don't mind if it is more than one, but at leeeeaaaaast one~? Pretty please~?

Unfortunately I can't help you out on that front, but I share the sentiment.
