Jian sighed heavily as the ferry finally finishing taking him from Air Temple Island in the middle of Yue Bay just offshore from Republic City. The ferry had been late in returning from the city's shore, which had put the Avatar-in-training behind schedule. The ferry being late was an exceedingly rare occurrence, so naturally on a day where he was supposed to meet someone in the city, that was the one day out of several months of running like clockwork where it had fallen behind schedule. This whole situation was a little odd, too. Jian had mastered his first two elements already, his native Earth, and then Fire. Despite almost two years of training with the Airbending master on the island, though, he hadn't passed his tests yet.
That was what made things so odd - under normal circumstances, he wouldn't have been started on Waterbending until his Airbending training was complete. The Order of the White Lotus had told him that the reason for this was his difficulty with the concept of Airbending, resulting from the vastly different attitude compared to both Earth and Fire. They told him that he might have more luck with Water, and it could serve as a transition into Air. He didn't buy it for a second. He was no idiot, and had heard the whispers. Equalists, the group that had nearly succeeded in taking over the city when Avatar Korra had been about his age, were rumored to be back... or rather, have never quite left. He wasn't sure how much stock these rumors really deserved, as there were always little incidents involving people claiming to be Equalists. Regardless, it seemed that the Order of the White Lotus wasn't taking any chances. They'd never admit it to him, but he was certain they wanted to push ahead his training so that he'd have at least some training in all of the elements in case the Equalists actually made a significant return.
The ferry neared the dock, but Jian didn't wait for the craft to be pulled in an secured. Instead, he used some of the Airbending he did know to give himself a boost as he ran to the front of the ship and jumped the gap, landing on the dock. He wasted no time going into a run, heading for the port where ship from the Northern Water Tribe should have come in. Unfortunately, everyone had already gotten off and headed down the street, according to one of the ship's crew. He quickly thanked the man and then headed down the city street, eyes flicking from face to face, trying to find someone who fit the description he'd been given.
Young man, my age, bit of a beard, shortish reddish-brown hair... handsome... he thought, recalling the description. Well, the member of the Order of the White Lotus might've phrased it a bit differently, and hadn't said handsome, but that had been the first world to come to Jian's mind as he caught sight of the man he was probably supposed to be meeting, leaning against a pillar. He fit the rest of the description, and his clothes looked reminiscent of the Water Tribe.
He walked over, giving a friendly smile. "Silas?" he asked, but continued without waiting for an answer, figuring it couldn't hurt to introduce himself even if he was wrong, and extended his hand to shake, "Jian. As in... Avatar Jian. Or, at least, Avatar-to-be Jian."
