Rather than damage over time, wouldn't age simply lower the maximum HP?

    That makes more sense.

Start calculating effective HP immediately based on certain types of damage done to you.

This is actually an interesting concept. I feel like people would be desensitized to the idea of pain. I mean, we're cool with our characters taking some hits as long as they don't die or get close to death (we don't even mind if they're close to death as long as we know they're not going to be taking more hits in the near future so we'll have to chance to heal up) but I imagine that would hurt like hell in real life. So you wouldn't want to get hurt yourself depending on your pain threshold, but where someone might wince at what looks like a bad fall, for example, he might just see the HP bar instead and be like "Oh, it's all right, he just lost 20 HP."
Amazing set courtesy of Lillian Thorne!
