Can Friends be Lovers?[Suspect-Nydie]
Trent Blackwell-18.
It seemed like only yesterday when he had arrived on the campus. His mother was almost in tears as she gave him one last hug, which nearly killed him because she hugged him so tight. His father just stood back with his arms folded over his chest, simply shaking his head, pulling his mother off of him while wrapping his hand on his upper shoulder. “Look, if this college thing don’t work out, you come back home to us. You hear me?” Trent nodded his head as his father patted his back then smiled as his mother was getting into the car, shortly after his father got in. And they were off, he waved goodbye to them then huffed as he turned towards the dorm rooms. ‘Well, here goes nothing.’ Trent thought to himself while grabbing his six bags and laptop bag, throwing it over his shoulder and walking into the dorm hall.
Now, his hazel green eyes were staring at his professor in Literature class. Shakespeare. That’s who they were talking about this time around. It was close to the Fall and this semester had just started. His eyes fell from his professor onto the outside, where it was a clear sunny day, just the way he liked it, since he could go outside and sit up under his favorite tree and get on his laptop.
“Trent.” His ears twitched as his face was now placed on his fist, still looking out the window. “Trent!” He jumped as his professor was now towering over him. “Y-Yes?” He said with a raised brow then his professor placed her hands upon her hips. “Please pay attention or I would have to fail you this semester.” She spoke turning around, her raven locks of hair flowing gently against her back. He mimicked her behind her back then rolled his eyes while leaning back in his chair, watching the clock. Time couldn’t go any slower. It seemed like every time he glanced over there, the hand would go back instead of forward. A slight sigh escaped through his lips as he pulled out his iPhone and opened up the email section. He used his thumb to unlock his phone, after typing in his password.
He and this anonymous female have been emailing each other since last summer and he thinks that they are ready to meet.
Trent looks up to see the professor if looking at him, which she wasn’t, she was actually writing on the smart board. [Hey, how is your day going so far? I’m in class, bored.] He emailed the female then put his phone away, waiting for a reply. Finally, class ended and he was the first to gather his things and leave the classroom. He dodged through almost everyone to get outside of the Hawkins hall and run through the grass, going over to his usual hang out spot in the afternoon, which was underneath an acorn tree. He pulled out his laptop and turned it on, with a push of the power button. The first thing he would do is check to see if the female had responded to his email, yet or not.

Trista O'Neil - 18
‘Uh-oh, the room’s dark. This isn’t going to be pretty.’ The young redhead thought as she approached her classroom. Sure enough, she was right. Instead of being able to sneak quietly into the room with her late status going unnoticed, the instructor was on full alert the second that she entered the room. Glancing up from the projector screen, the man scowled in her direction, causing her to shrink as her shoulders slumped in defeat. “Glad you could join us, Ms. O’Neil.” He chastised. “Now if you wouldn’t mind taking your seat and joining the rest of the class we can finish going over….” Trista failed to catch the rest of his lecture; she was too busy mentally scolding herself while she crept to the back of the room to take a seat. ‘Great, now he’s going to target me for the rest of the class.’
It was days like these that she wished she could go home after class and relax in her nice comfortable bed; but unfortunately her bed was hours away along with her home. She was stuck returning to her dorm room where her roommate was bound to spend the afternoon bugging her about which outfit looked better. Sighing softly, Trista tried to focus on her professor and what he was explaining, but math never had been her favorite subject, and soon she was bored out of her mind.
Trista wondered what her mother was doing at the moment. Since she was an only child, and she and her mother were close, it had been a difficult decision for her to leave home and go off to college. Her mother had been encouraging, of course, but had been unable to stop crying when Trista packed up her beat up old car to head off to bigger things. “Are you sure you’ll make it there? You’ll call me the second you get there, right?” Trista had told her mother she’d be fine, given the older woman a hug and taken off without looking back. If she had looked back, she would have been crying the whole way to her dorm. ‘I think I’ll call her tonight. It’s been a few days; she’ll probably start worrying if I don’t call her soon.’
Almost the exact instant that she had been thinking of calling her mother, she felt vibrations coming from her back pocket. Glancing around the room to see if anyone had noticed the soft buzzing sound, Trista dug her phone from pocket and cast one more glance around to make sure she wasn’t being watched. Unlocking her phone, she glanced up at her notifications to see she had gotten an email, and she couldn’t help but grin. ‘Hmm, I hope it’s who I think it’s from and not junk.’ The thought of her mysterious pen pal instantly put her in a good mood, and she eagerly flicked over her screen to find her email app. She read over the short message and her grin widened. ‘Well, at least I’m not the only one bored out of their minds.’
-I’m doing better now that I’ve heard from you. Class is horrible! How are you other than being bored?- She wrote quickly, before hitting the send button. Her mind began to drift away from class once more to think about the guy she had been writing to for at least a year. Although she had friends, it was nice to talk to someone who didn’t really know her, she felt like she could talk about whatever was on her mind and not be judged. Still, she would like to meet him at one point, but she wasn’t sure if he’d actually be up for it. ‘Maybe, who knows? I’ll just have to wait and see.’ She thought with just a bit of sadness.
When class was over, Trista slide out of her seat and stretched with a satisfied grunt. She hurried from the classroom before she could receive another lecture about punctuality and immediately exited the building with her phone still clutched in her hand. She glanced at the screen to see if he had written back yet, and when she noticed no new notifications she sighed and slid the phone back into her pocket. ‘Guess I should enjoy the day while I can, who knows how long the weather will be this nice.’ And with that she strolled leisurely through the campus, debating where she should go for lunch that day.

The day was still young and just bursting with energy, as the sun shined not a cloud in the sky.
A smile danced across his lips as he heard the tone of him getting an email. It was her. His insides jittered and his muscles tingled. He read her reply then laughed. [I am always bored, nothing to do on my campus. What about yours?] He pressed the send button and the email was successfully sent. He leaned his head back against the tree as he bit his bottom lip. He shook his thoughts of love off as they were just friends, for now but they talked about anything and everything with each other. He really wants to meet her but is afraid that she wouldn’t accept him for him, or that she isn’t who she says she is. All of those negative thoughts ran through his head now as he heard his being called by a male figure.
“Trent! Get your lazy ass up!” It was his friend, Arthur. He laughed while powering down his laptop and getting up off the grass, using his hand to dust the grass off the back of his pants. Trent gathered his things and went over there towards him. “What are you doing, talking to your girlfriend?” Arthur teased him as they walked through the building and into his dorm room. “We’re just friends but she has potential.” Trent said, walking into Arthur’s dorm and sitting down on his couch and leaning back. Arthur walked back into the living room and handed Trent a drink, which was a Coke Cola. “Thanks.” Trent said nicely while taking a sip and staring at Arthur, who looked like he had something on his mind. “What?” Trent asked while laughing a little then raising a brow while smiling. “When do you plan on meeting her?” The one question that already haunts Trent is now haunting him through his friends.
Trent shrugged his shoulders then sighed while running his fingers through his locks of hair then stared back at Arthur. “Whenever she is ready, I guess.” Trent replied while laying down on the couch now and staring up at the ceiling. “This girl is amazing, I feel like I already know her. What if she already replied? I have to check.” He scrambled through his pants pockets, looking for his iPhone as he hit then email application but his phone was taken away by Arthur, who laughed and ran around the dorm room with it. “Not the time to play!” Trent said, standing up and chasing after Arthur, who was in the bathroom with the door locked, reading his emails, probably.
Trent jiggled the door knob and banged on the door, until Arthur surrendered and handed him his phone back. “Thank you.” Trent said while going through his inbox, which was completely empty. “You deleted my messages! You know what…” He spoke while grabbing his book bag and laptop bag, throwing them both over his shoulder as he left Arthur’s dorm room with the slam of the door. He stood there, back first and sighed as he may never know what she said.

Trista walked slowly back toward her dorm; deciding that she would spend her time between classes with a sandwich and her Algebra text. Considering how she had failed to pay attention during the entire class, she had to make up for it by studying that much harder, it was the only class she was struggling to keep her grades up in. Just as she resigned herself to a fate of boredom and trinomials, her phone went off signaling that she had another email. Her hand automatically went to her pocket to dig her phone out, but a voice stopped the motion.
“Hey Tri, going back up to the room?” Her roommate questioned, coming up alongside of the red head. Trista dropped her hand back down to her side, and turned to smile at her roommate Becca. The two had been paired up at the start of the year and had formed a strange friendship where Trista had become Becca’s fashion consultant, even though the other girl claimed she was horrible at the job. It wasn’t Trista’s fault. She never had been much for keeping up with the latest clothing trends, half of them she didn’t understand at all. Still, it kept the peace between the two females who had absolutely nothing in common other than sharing the same dorm room at the same university.
“Yeah. I’m gonna grab a bite to eat and study until my next class. What’s up?” Trista asked, slightly anxious to end the conversation so that she could check her email without someone staring over her shoulder. Trista fidgeted nervously, shuffling her books and her weight from one side to the other while staring at her roommate.
“Oh nothing. I was wondering if you could help me out tonight. I have a date and I’m not sure what to wear.” The other girl grinned when Trista released a small agonized groan. “Come on, it’s not that big of a deal. I promise, I’ll limit it to two outfits this time.”
“That’s what you said last time and I spend over an hour making suggestions that you ignored.” Trista retorted, causing Becca to look back at her with a crestfallen expression. The redhead sighed in defeat and nodded her head. “Alright, but only two outfits and I’m holding you to it. I’ve got to study tonight or I’m going to end up flunking my math class and I’d rather not have to take it a second time. Once is more than enough torture for me.”
“Deal!” Becca agreed with her grin back in place. The two girls then walked together talking about Becca’s date and her plans for the evening. When they reached their dorm room, Becca spun on Trista, causing the girl to take an awkward step back. “How come you don’t date? I know it’s not because you haven’t been asked, so why don’t you ever go?”
Trista shrugged her shoulders and walked past her roommate and into their dorm room. “I don’t know. No one has really caught my attention.” It wasn’t exactly a lie; someone had gotten her attention, she just wasn’t sure if she was ready to take the plunge and meet him. She thought to her phone and the message that was waiting on it and hoped her roommate would disappear for a few minutes so that she could answer it.
As if reading Trista’s thoughts, Becca decided that she was going to go try on one of the outfits she had planned for the night so that Trista could give her opinion. Once Becca had scurried away with her outfit in hand, Trista freed her phone from her pocket and read over the message eagerly. Soon she began to type out her reply. –Same here. Not much to do but study and hang with the roomy. Maybe I could come visit and help ease your boredom- She read over the message, debating whether or not she should send it or not. After a moment she changed her mind and edited the email. –Same here. Not much to do on my campus either. I guess they’re all the same.- Trista sighed softly and hit the send button, feeling a bit like a coward for not sticking with her original message.
She didn’t get long to dwell on her disappointment when Becca returned wearing a bright red blouse and a black skirt that stopped just short of her knee. “Well? What do you think?”
Trista was not able to cover her horrified face in time before Becca caught it. “It’s the shirt, isn’t it?” She asked, to which Trista nodded quickly. “I don’t think red is a good color for a first date. Too…noticeable.”
Becca sighed and nodded. “You’re right. I guess I’ll go try outfit number two. Stay there!” The other girl rushed off, leaving Trista behind, staring anxiously at the cellphone in her hand. She hoped that the reply she got to her email wasn’t too bad. She thought the message was completely lame, and hoped that guy writing to her wouldn’t notice that. As she sat awaiting a response, she wondered what kind of reply she would have gotten if she had gone with her original message instead of the safer option.
