After the Helium Wars in 1996, the whole world was left in a state of chaos and destruction. In California, Battery City appeared where L.A once stood – ruled over by BL/ind, a corporation with one goal in mind: perfection. They offered protection from the radiation, hunger and emotions, all in one simple pill. But with BL/ind's takeover came the Killjoys, rebels who ran away from Battery City and set up home in the wasteland zones, where they're trying to fight back against BL/ind's monochrome vision of the future and are constantly being hunted down by BL/ind's Exterminators and Draculoids.
Backstory
January 2020.
The agents came in the middle of the night, like ghosts, in an attack which came to be known as the Great Extermination of 2020.
On a steady diet of easily won small skirmishes, the wasteland Killjoys, meant to be rebels fighting for freedom and liberation, had become careless and, at times, indolent. Some had lost site of their goals, others had lost hope... even more simply didn't care anymore.
So when BL/ind finally mobilised a force (of S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W agents and Draculoids alike) to try and destroy them once and for all, no Killjoy or gang was prepared. They swooped in, rayguns blazing, in numbers which could make the bravest Killjoy panic. And panic they did. Many were injured and killed, resources lost, whole camps were split up and driven apart. A majority of the dead were loners, who didn’t have the security of a group to help them survive.
The whole of zones one, two and three were swarmed, with zones four, five and six mostly escaping unscathed. The Nuclearheads, outnumbered heavily and unprepared, fled further into the wastelands after a short, bloody fight, taking refuge with another gang. The Smilers, in their underground bunker, were lucky, and found themselves mostly ignored by the BL/ind forces in favour of chasing down all the stragglers they could find, although a few of those unlucky enough to be out in the zones at the time were also picked off.
Quickly, after most of the BL/ind forces had retreated back into the first two zones, it became apparent that they were now BL/ind territory. Outposts were set up and every Killjoy camp that BL/ind came across after the main attack was systematically destroyed. Bombs were planted, buildings torn down, bodies burned. Not all Killjoys were killed though; some (especially the major players) were captured, taken back to Battery City for reconditioning, holding and experimentation.
Bl/ind wasted no time using the victory against the pesky Killjoys as a PR tool to convince the Battery City populace they were the only ones who could keep control as well as keep everyone safe.
January 2021.
It is rumored BL/ind are working on making zone one into an extension of Battery City, and already BL/ind-funded and run resorts have been planned, including ‘Great Escapes’ which has already been fully built, the pet project of BL/ind’s head of marketing.
It seems like BL/ind have finally hit a proper blow against the rebels. The Nuclearheads and The Smilers have found themselves without territories of their own, in uneasy alliances and finding shelter with other gangs whilst they try and repair their lives.
All of the gangs have been hurt, though; many friends of theirs have been killed or injured, important and even vital resource stashes destroyed, their own territories invaded by follow-up BL/ind forces to rat out survivors, and their lives completely changed. No longer can they freely walk around their own zones without being completely alert to the possibility of another attack. They find themselves even more paranoid than before.
Places familiar to many Killjoys before are no longer safe to visit, including the warehouse of Tommy’s Warez and the Scrapyard. Even Grimshaw Hospital is now out-of-bounds, which leaves injured rebels in an even worse position than before. Drac patrols have increased tenfold, and they're all out for blood. Dr. Death Defying, the well-known voice of rebel radio, has gone missing; whether he's dead, on the run or captured is unknown, but for now the radiowaves lay silent.
But the rebels aren’t completely destroyed, and they want revenge.
General Information
"What are the Draculoids?"
Draculoids are BL/ind's personal security force. They're the guys you can see dressed all in white, wearing vampire masks. They're often brainwashed individuals from society, but sometimes they're volunteers and, rarely, they're reformed Killjoys. They're part of the S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W division and are controlled by the Exterminators.
"What are Exterminators?"
Exterminators are the guys BL/ind has created or recruited to guard Battery City from the 'terrorist' threat in the form of the Killjoys, and they're often sent out on missions to the zones to clean-up the "vermin". They do sometimes control units of Draculoids, but only the Chief Exterminator, Korse, normally has big groups at his disposal. Often, Exterminators go solo on their missions, so they blend in more. That friendly person who helped you change your tyre might not be so friendly after all, Killjoy. So watch your back.
"What's a Killjoy? What do they do?"
Killjoys are rebels who live in the wasteland zones outside Battery City. They're freedom fighters who oppose BL/ind by stirring up rebellion and rumours, and dress in bright colours and make as much art as possible just to rile up BL/ind, because BL/ind strives for a world of perfection and conformity without colour. They often go by monikers such as Party Poison or Jet Star to keep their identity protected as best as they can, and keep any family they may have still in Battery City safe and not on BL/ind's wanted list. For that reason, they also often wear masks.
"But wait a minute, you have androids?"
Yes, there's androids. Whilst it may not be realistic in our world, this is set in an alternative world where artifical intelligence research started earlier and had much more success. BL/ind were the first to actually create realistic androids, but it's no longer much of a secret and many companies have sprung up to create them or now use android workers. There's many different types too, such as !*@#?DROIDS (more classily known as lovedroids), worker droids, Exterminator droids, et cetera. There's even a few Killjoy-allied androids running around, normally ones which have been restored by Killjoys and turned to their cause.
"And ray-guns?"
After the Helium Wars, metal was in short supply for quite some years, and BL/ind invested a lot of work and money into finding an alternative to the bullet. The ray-guns you see are the result of that. They're guns which fire Minovsky particles in a concentrated beams of energy, and are powered by extremely complicated batteries which BL/ind also engineered, but are now sold mostly by Electrokat. Whilst bullets are now common again, many prefer ray-guns because they're quicker and less bloody in a fight.

"BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY..."
The Slums
[ANDROID JUNKYARD]
THESE ARE THE AREAS OF BATTERY CITY THAT BL/IND WOULD RATHER KEEP HIDDEN – THE SLUMS. THOSE WHO CAN’T AFFORD THE PERFECT LIFE CAN GET AT LEAST A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS AND SAFETY FROM THE RADIATION OF THE ZONES HERE, BUT DON’T EXPECT IT TO BE LUXURIOUS. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DRACULOID PATROLS – THEY COULD BE SEARCHING FOR 'UNDESIRABLES' LIKE YOU TO GET RID OF.
Route Guano
[DEAD PEGASUS GAS STATION]
NICKNAMED THE GETAWAY MILE, ROUTE GUANO IS THE MAIN ROAD IN AND OUT OF BATTERY CITY AND THROUGH THE ZONES. BUT STAY SAFE, THIS PLACE IS A HOTPOT OF DIFFERENT FACTIONS, GROUPS, PERSONALITIES; ALLIES AND ENEMIES COMBINED. ONE THING IS CERTAIN, THOUGH – TRAVEL ON THIS ROAD WILL NEVER BE BORING.
BASE TEMPERATURE IS 85 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, GETTING HOTTER AS YOU GO FURTHER ALONG.
Zone 1
[GREAT ESCAPES, THE MAILBOX, THE SCRAPYARD, ABANDONED NUCLEARHEADS' CAMP]
ZONE ONE: THE FIRST STEP OUTSIDE BATTERY CITY, WHERE SPILLOVER CITIZENS SOMETIMES END UP LIVING. IT'S ROUGH, WILD AND NOTHING LIKE THE CITY, BUT THERE'S STILL POPULATED AREAS. DRACULOIDS PATROL THIS ZONE, MAKING SURE TO KEEP THE LOYAL BLI/ND CUSTOMERS 'SAFE FROM TERRORISTS' – THOSE KILLJOYS FOOLISH ENOUGH WANDER IN HERE BETTER BE ON THEIR TOES, OR THEY MAY END UP IN A CLAP WITH AN EXTERMINATOR.
THIS ZONE IS CURRENTLY HEAVILY POPULATED BY DRACS, EXTERMINATORS AND BL/IND AGENTS.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 89 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
Zone 2
[GRIMSHAW HOSPITAL, TOMMY'S WAREZ, ABANDONED SMILERS' CAMP]
STILL LITTLE MORE THAN A STONE'S THROW FROM BATTERY CITY, THIS ZONE IS HOTTER, WILDER BUT, SOME WAYS, LESS DANGEROUS. DON'T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN THOUGH – THERE’S STILL DANGER LURKING AROUND MOST CORNERS. KEEP YOUR GUN AT THE READY; YOU DON'T WANT TO BE CAUGHT OUT.
THIS ZONE IS CURRENTLY HEAVILY POPULATED BY DRACS, EXTERMINATORS AND BL/IND AGENTS.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 93 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
Zone 3
[GRAVEL GERTIE'S ORPHANAGE, THE SKATEPARK]
CONGRATULATIONS ON SURVIVING THIS FAR! YOU'RE ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES. THIS IS THE MIDDLE OF THE ZONES, BETWEEN THE PREDOMINANTLY KILLJOY ZONE SIX AND BL/IND. THERE'S STILL PLENTLY OF TROUBLE ABOUT, BUT THERE'S MORE HELP AROUND TOO.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 97 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
Zone 4
[THE OUTPOSTS, THE DINER, THE MOTEL]
THIS IS WHERE IT REALLY STARTS TO GET WILD, KILLJOYS. THERE'S MORE SHRUBS AROUND HERE THAN PEOPLE, SO IT AIN'T ACTUALLY THE PERFECT PARTY SPOT. BUT LUCKILY FOR YOU, ONLY THE REALLY MEAN AND HARDY EXTERMINATORS TRAVERSE HERE – OR IS THAT UNLUCKILY?
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 101 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
Zone 5
[THE OLD HOTEL]
ALL THOSE NICE PRETTY PAVED ROADS YOU MAY HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING ARE TURNING TO DUST NOW, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE LOSE THEIR WAY 'ROUND HERE IF THEY'RE NOT CAREFUL. IT'S GETTING HARDER TO SEE AHEAD IN THE DUST. IT'S UNLIKELY THAT THERE'S STILL DRACULOIDS LURKING BUT LIKE ALWAYS, STAY ALERT.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 104 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT; SLIGHT ACID RAIN IS COMMON.
Zone 6
[ABANDONED PURIFICATION PLANT, MEGA MOON'S THROTTLE BAR]
THE VERY LAST STOP BEFORE NO MAN'S LAND, ZONE SIX IS WILDER AND DUSTIER THAN ALL THE ZONES BEFORE IT. THERE'S A LOT OF KILLJOY HOTSPOTS HERE, BUT WATCH YOUR STEP – YOU MAY STUMBLE OVER A KILLJOY'S STORAGE TRENCH OR, EVEN WORSE, THEIR SKELETON. DRACS AND EXTERMINATORS NORMALLY ONLY VENTURE OUT THIS FAR ON MISSIONS – THERE'S NO PATROLS ANYMORE.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 109 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT; SEVERE ACID RAIN IS COMMON.
Wastelands
WELCOME, MY FRIEND, TO NO MAN’S LAND. EVEN THE HARDIEST KILLJOYS SHY AWAY FROM VENTURING OUT THIS FAR – FURTHER OUT, NOBODY HAS A CLUE WHAT LURKS. THE RADIATION HERE IS ENOUGH TO HAVE KILLED OFF ALL THE SMALL ANIMALS AND THERE’S NOT A LIVING PLANT IN SITE. GOOD LUCK SURVIVING OUT HERE, MOTORBABIES. I’LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS 118 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT; SEVERE ACID RAIN IS EXTREMELY COMMON
