Name: Sir Ornstein
Age: 31
Sex: Male
Species: Human
Profession: One of the last remaining members of
Je Královo Kopí, the prized Aemerian Order of heavy spearmen employed throughout the course of the war that has dwindled to roughly seven members. Currently reassigned to work with and manage new conscripts while staying out of the public eye.
Appearance-
Sir Ornstein is a tall individual, roughly six and a half feet in height. Where once he was blessed with golden, flowing locks and sparkling blue eyes, years of conflict have turned his now shaggy hair a sliver grey and his eyes have lost their shimmer, having long been replaced with cold, icy orbs.
Biography- Like every member of
Je Královo Kopí, or
The King's Spear as it is referred to more commonly, Sir Ornstein was raised an orphan, given up by his parents as a mere babe. Chosen among dozens of other orphans to eventually become a member of
The King's Spear, Ornstein was trained in life of the arts of war, spending much of his youth learning from scholars and historians of past conquests, failures and victories. The other young boys were expected and encouraged to test each other in contests of strength and knowledge, all meant to forge a bond early on between one another. Most of all though the boys were taught of their allegiance to both the King and the Throne, and that one day they would take up the spears of both to defend Aemeria and it's people.
When the boys turned eleven each of them were assigned to an existing member of
The King's Spear, learning under the knights tutelage, as master and disciple. As the years progressed each boy was taught how to move, fight, swim and react in their own set of specially crafted armor. Each mastered the unique form of spearmanship perfected long ago by the first members of the group, designed to most effectively use the "Cross Spear", a special spear crafted only in Aemeria and only for
The King's Spear. Each young boy progressed, learning new skills for survival on the battlefield and how, in times of peace, to properly test one's own skills each day. Every one of them was promising in their own right.
Of the group of young boys however Ornstein appeared to possess a gift for using the 'Cross Spear', mastering the use of the weapon several months before the other boys. As time continued his skill with it grew, eventually granting him several mock victories in sparring matches with his mentor. By the time he had turned twenty one Ornstein rarely lost a match with his fellows or his mentors. Eventually though the boys bid farewell to their mentors, taking on their roles as fully trained members. With no concrete threats or conflict in sight the young men and Ornstein were able to relax, occasionally going out to deal with threats from powerful bands of brigands or wildlife and never coming back in defeat or failure.
All of that changed though in the same year that Ornstein turned twenty five, when the northern nation of Kaell attacked.
The King's Spear was, naturally, among some of the first sent to beat back the invaders, expected to push them back over their borders in the first engagement. They were also among some of the first to fall to southern blades. While the young men were certainly well trained and knowledgeable, having dealt with minor threats in the their homeland, they lacked something the soldiers of Kaell possessed: experience in full fledged warfare. War was a far call from the orderly matches between mentor and student and many of the Order did not return from those first few engagements. Nobles, it was said, were not pleased with hearing of the failure of the Order and pushed those in charge to send them back into the fray, in the vain hope that they could somehow create a victory and become a shining symbol of hope for the general populace.
As the years dragged on though, and as more and more members of the Order fell, it became obvious that no amount of battle would be able to restore the image of the Order, which was now tarnished and spoken of as one might speak of a dying relative. For though the Order had held many a position against the invaders and though each battle only served to make it's members stronger, the loss of all but seven knights served as a reminder of the toll the war was taking on Aemeria and it's people. Those in charge, sensing this, decided that the best course of action was to take those of the Order still alive out of the public eye, instead putting them in low risk positions where they could be watched and kept afar from the major conflicts.
It was this decision making that brought Ornstein on his current task, to collection, training and maintenance of conscripts in the western part of the nation. Years of constant fighting had changed him, making him into a colder individual less concerned with the war and more concerned with simply getting through another day.
Equipment
Main Armament:
"Cross Spear" Polearm. This extremely versatile and sturdy weapon is capable of punching through armor and flesh with equal ease, often being employed against heavily mounted knights or formidable creatures. Given it's unique style only those properly trained in it's use are capable of bringing out the full potential of this deadly weapon. When held with two hands experienced wielders make use of the two handles that branch off below the spear head, allowing for greater control and tighter use.
Secondary Armament:
Estoc. Bladeless sword designed to punch through plate and mail alike.
14" Parrying dagger for offhand use.
Armor: An ornate but combat proven set of plate armor, reinforced underneath by strips of chainmail. The helmet resembles, like any other helmet belonging to a member of the once prized
Je Královo Kopí, the head of a lion. Though it certainly slows the wearer a great deal, this armor is moderately lighter than most plate mail available to soldiers, allowing the wearer greater mobility than it's heavier counterparts.
Supplies: Several maps, telescope, mapping tools, spending coin to keep the conscripts fed, equipped and paid, a weeks worth of field rations, hardtack, sharpening tools, three wineskins of water, personal (and larger than standard) tent and bedroll and a lockbox of respectable size for important documents. Altogether weighing roughly forty some pounds.
Other: A ring given to all members of
Je Královo Kopí that is said to grant the bearer the strength to carry on through the toughest of marches or charges, though whether this is a divine blessing, the work of magics or simple rumor has yet to be confirmed. A lion's head is engraved into the face of the ring. It can be worn comfortably over a gauntlet, as it was designed to.
