Geography: Hessnya is a region made up of valleys that are all carved by the same river source, the Andlastria. The region has thick forests between the riverside fields and the mountains that divide the valleys. Their are scatterings of towns and farming villages along the edge of the river, slowly leading towards the river's source, the lake where the city of Hesradorn is located. As you follow the river further, you come to the foothills and fields of Cymrodor, where the majority of Hessnya's agriculture and population is found in towns and villages. Further south along the coast are the Arbracht and Arkantan regions that each hug of mostly rocky cliffs and wetlands, the inhabitants surviving off fishing the many of the Andlastrian's tributaries that flow into the ocean.
Government: Each settlement and surrounding lands are governed by a chieftain who are in turn governed by a regional lord. These regional lords are under centuries old oaths of their lineage in service and loyalty to the King of Hessnya. The country runs under an absolute monarchy that gives the position of monarch via the eldest child of the current monarch, regardless of gender. King Hymrik is one of long line of kings and queens who have ruled Hessnya since they existed only in the Hessnya region.
Technological Level: Hessnyans technological advances are limited at best, excelling in only certain fields. Their architecture is mostly constructed from wood with stone more commonly used for walls or certain districts in major cities. Iron is mined and refined in the mountains that make up the valleys that make up Hessnya, they excel themselves in their forging and artisan work with not only iron but other precious metals found in the mines, such as gold and silver. They also boast a large wood crafting and river shipping technology.
Military Notes: 2% of the population are the 6,800 soldiers that make up the standing Hessnyan army, with the declaration of war levies are called by chieftains and available troops are gathered and the standing army's numbers are increased tenfold. The most powerful force in the army are the thousands strong cataphracts that utilise iron scale armor to become a deadly heavy cavalry unit. The main backbone of the Hessnyan army are the spearmen with oval shields, light iron scale armor and long spears to form two hundred man phalanxes that are a threat to infantry and cavalry alike. In lesser numbers are warriors who serve as skirmishers with bows and shortswords to harass the enemy in battle either from the sides of phalanx formations, ahead of the main army or in ambushes against unsuspecting enemies.
Religion: Hessnyans believe in the mother goddess of the Andlastria river. The river is the life blood and centre of Hessnyan religion, after their belief that the mother goddess gave birth to mankind in the very waters of the river. They hold a deep respect for the goddesses spirits that inhabit the river and perform many religious ceremonies both common and rare in its waters. Hessnyans are baptised in its water by the goddesses druids, get married and even if they want to acquire the goddesses blessing, procreate and give birth in the river though this is uncommon and as argued by the druids not necessary. When a hessnyan dies, they wrap the body in thin cloth and take it to the coast or one of the Anlastria's river mouths and place the body on a raft to float out into the ocean. The ocean holds significance in religion as it is considered the way towards the afterlife at the rivers end. This belief explains why Hessnyans rarely travel, let alone fish in the ocean as they consider it to make the dead restless.
History: The first Hessnyans were a single tribe in the Hessnya valley. Slowly, over the centuries, the tribe expanded its borders by conquering the entire region. Both religious and economic reasons made the hessnyans migrate and expand into the lands along the Andlastria. As they came into the Cymrodor region, many hessnyan migrants greatly advanced their agricultural power and domesticated local horses, later forming the base industries for current cataphracts to be equipped and trained with armor coming from forges in Hessnya.
The fledgling kingdom came into contact with a confederation of tribes against hessnyan expansion into their coastal lands. The decades of fighting that went on would later mold the hessnyan army into the fighting force that it is currently. Eventually, the tribes were conquered, and the lands would become the regions of Arbracht and Arkantan. That war was over four hundred years ago to the present date.
Foreign Policy: Hessnyans are distrusting and phobic of foreign influences, especially foreign religions who have over the years reached out in the form of missionaries and roving priests. Hessnyans are also distrusting of those who sail on the afterlife, and a highly recommendation is that ships land away from the mouth of the river to avoid offending the local populace. Though despite all this, only a fanatic or a fool would deny that it was foreigners who buy a significant amount of timber, metals, food and horses that Hessnya produces. For the most part also, Hessnya has yet to concern itself with the goings on of the outside world, preferring to stay out of international conflicts. Many conservatives within hessnyan nobility however continue to support a large army in case foreigners consider forcing the outside world upon them.
