    Legends of the Sun (OOC)

    Character slots are Open!
    IC thread

    Overview:

Long ago, in our world's distant past, the continent of Pangea was covered in a vast desert, thousands of miles across. The dark-skinned humans grew and evolved in this wasteland, learning to find water in the most difficult of places. Humanity covered the earth, taking root in even the harshest environments, and learning to harness the innate magic they all possessed. Great cities sprang up around the lakes of the desert, and the only boundary stopping humanity's infinite expansion were the grand spires of the mountain range at the very edges of the desert, beyond which lay a wild, unexplored jungle. Few humans made it into the jungle, but those that did disappeared, never to be heard from again.

But humanity is not alone in their fight for survival. An ancient, almighty race watches over them. The Helios, the Lords of the Sun, watch over humanity and all the other races of the universe from their great cities on the stars themselves. Their hair as flames and skin as bright as snow, they even walk among humans, battling the threats that come into being, using their unparalleled might in combat to challenge even the greatest evil. The Helios that come to Earth bring with them great gifts. Powerful technology fueled by pure magic, great weapons, and massive machines among them. But the greatest gift of all came in the form of the Guardians.

The Solar spirits have accompanied the Helios for eons, giving them power and insight. Each Guardian is a powerful being of raw elemental fires. Humans who find a spirit can ask for its guidance. sometimes, they will merely provide a word of advice, while at other times, they will bond to the human, giving them powers far beyond what any mere mortal would contain. And with the aid of a Helios Lord, the Guardians become infinitely more powerful, their true power capable of being unlocked by the touch of a Sun Lord.

This happy, symbiotic relationship lasted for thousands of years. But one day, a dark cloud appears at the center of the desert. It expanded outwards, enveloping the massive desert in the dark grasp of a lightless reality. The only light beneath the clouds comes from what the Humans can create themselves, whether by their own creations, or the technology of the Helios. Villages begin to disappear one by one, as contact was completely cut off. But the most troubling part is something known only to the Helios themselves.

The three Sun Gods who had been on the surface of the planet were serving as it's protectors when the cloud first appeared. Moments before it appeared, all three vanished without a trace. No telepathic connection could be established, and all three of their Guardians went dormant, their sparks extinguished, as did every other Guardian on the surface who was Awake. Humanity was without its best protectors.

A month after the cloud first appeared, over half the desert is covered. Only a ring of sand is left before the mountains and the jungle are both swallowed. heroes begin to emerge, hoping to find the cause of so much emptiness, but many disappeared. Others were killed by strange creatures, as pitch black as the night, with eyes of pure void. All hope appears to be lost, until a single star falls into the desert, leaving a blazing trail of fire in the night sky...

    Time and Setting:

This story is set several thousand years in the past, in Pangea, as if the continent had never split. Most of the world is covered in desert, and the entire desert is enclosed by a mountain range which levels out into a vast jungle, and eventually an ocean that circles the globe. At the start of the Roleplay, the dark clouds will have already spread out to two-thirds of the desert, in a rough circle. Cities and towns dot the landscape, almost always being located around an oasis or the rare lake.

Because this is also set several thousand years in the past, that means NO MODERN WEAPONS! MagiTech weapons will be explained below, but no modern firearms are allowed. Otherwise, almost any fantasy weapon is a go. Swords, axes, spears, bows, etc. Magical enchantments are abundant, giving weapons extra durability, extra cutting power, making them lightweight, anything you could imagine. Think Dungeons and dragons, and you'll have a fairly accurate picture.

    Magic and Physical ability:

In this world, Magic is governed by a single, unalienable law: Every Human and Helios alike has within them magical energy. The amount of energy varies from person to person, and defines how powerful they can become. For most people, magical energy merely gives them physical strength above and beyond that of there fellow humans. The emerging "heroes" typically have a level of physical prowess akin to Television Martial Arts, and those with primarily physical ability are known as Fighters. (For character creation purposes).

Some humans, however, learn to use their energy in a different way. These Mages, rather than using their energy to enhance their physical ability, instead use it to cast miracles. Spellcasting is elemental in nature, but virtually every element exists in some forms, often in multiple forms. It also requires no fancy circles or words (Although depending on the type of magic, they can be useful). Magic is almost purely mental in nature. Simply will your energis to cast spells, and they will, as long as you know how to guide them.[/INDENT]

A good majority of humans will use a cross of both Physical and Elemental magic. Mages almost always will retain some extra physical ability to keep themselves alive, while Fighters may also learn a few spells to give them an edge in combat. Rarely is anyone exclusively a fighter or a mage.

    MagiTech:

The Helios have brought with them a number of powerful devices on their visits to earth. MagiTech, as it is called, is rare and hard to come by, but always extremely powerful. Transforming swords, mystical vehicles, even a Helios Tower is said to exist. MagiTech at its simplest is merely small trinkets. time-tellers, heirlooms, the occasional enchanted armor piece. Weapons are rarer, but still exist in many forms. MagiTech weapons were designed as weapons capable of taking on multiple forms; a sword might unfold into a spear, or a bow might collapse to be carried on a hip with ease. Because Helios MagiTech is forged out of starmetal, it is also enchanted with insane power in many cases, and nearly indestructible.

There also exist human recreations of MagiTech, A few humans have done remarkable jobs of recreating MagiTech using Earthen materials, however using these Earthen Technologies often comes at a dire price. Human Technicians have shown a trend to go insane, often committing suicide for reasons known only to them.

    The Helios and Guardians:

The Helios were born on the stars themselves, and live on the stars. Sol, Earth's sun, is the home star of the Helios, thus the reason they take such special care for Earth. Helios, by nature, are virtually immune to both intense heat and intense light, requiring immunity to survive on the surfaces of stars. They live in massive floating cities composed of MagiTech towers and Vehicles, and have an entire culture all of their own.

The guardians are. in a way, souls of the Helios. In the rare case where a Sun Lord is killed in combat, their soul is recovered, and reborn as a being of elemental fire, just as the Helios's soul is. Guardians have lost much of their former selves, and few are capable of more than simple speech. Those that are fully sentient are reserved to be bonded to the Champions of the Helios, The upper echelon of combat, and the top tier of there society, second only to the high council. Guardians choose who to bond to, and will not take anyone they do not see worthy. Someone with evil in their heart would likely be consumed by the guardian in their attempt to use it.

Once a guardian has bonded to a person, Helios or Human, it grants them its power, and eventually, its very form. After years of practice and study, a Guardian-holder can transform their bodies into the form of their Guardian. While it brings great physical risk, it also grants immeasurable power - literally. A fully-powered Guardian in the hands of a Helios Champion has the power to destroy entire planets, if the need arises.

    Current News:

I'll start the IC thread after I've gotten a few characters in, and after I've gotten a chance to write out the all-important first post. There won't be a character limit as of yet, unless I literally get dozens of characters. I'll find a way to fit everyone in! If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me!

That being said, I'm also on the lookout for an artist who's willing to help out a little. If there's anyone who's willing to help bring some life to this universe, please let me know!

Also, I apologize for the somewhat sloppy main post. I'll fix it up as need be, after I've had a chance to sleep a little!

Can I join? As a guy who's befriended one of the newly approaching monsters, maybe?

Are the Guardians explicitly Sun Spirits? I got the impression in the Int Check that they were something like representatives of various parts of nature, or elementals, or something to that effect.

In any case, if you need help writing up nations or the magic system, let me know.

I think I have a Necromantic character planned.

@Wolf Please do join! If you want to be on the monster's side, however, you'll either need to join later in the RP, or start off good and eventually transition to their side (just by the way events will likely play out initially.)

@LJ good catch! Helios Guardians are exclusively solar elemental in nature, however Helios Guardians aren't the only guardians to exist in the world. Guardians won't become major important right away, so there's plenty of time for me to build up some lore on them :P
Also, thanks for the offer of helping write nations or magic, but I think I'm covered! I've got a pretty goose idea of how the nations will work out, and as for magic, there are many, many different magic systems in this world, so a single system would likely only serve to hamper creativity. Thanks anyways!

Would it be possible for my character to be bound to a particular Guardian? Perhaps a psychopomp-esque Death Guardian?

Maybe later on in the storyline, depending on a lot of factors, however I'm trying to limit the number of guardians in play at the start to as few as possible, and there's already one person who's asked, which is more than I had initially intended. So that's a no, sorry! D:

Are there other, similar spirits in the setting that could be associated with such an abstraction as death? I sort of want my character to have someone "along for the ride", if you will.

Seeing as how you want to play a necromancer, I would find it perfectly acceptable to have a ghost or spirit that accompanies you, however it can't be one of the Guardians. It can be a "guardian", but not a storyline Guardian, in that it could be a spirit that protects you, but won't be a Helios Spirit.

No, you misunderstand. I want to have a human who becomes friends with a monster. And he doesn't join the other side, he just becomes friends with a monster that seems to be a traitor to it's own kind.

@wolf Unfortunately, that I won't be able to allow. You'll see a very good reason why once the monsters make their first appearance. (Hint: You can't befriend pure evil.)
