To be fair, the rebels (and anyone for that matter) used similar tactics and armour. Even now, most soldiers don't wear armour outside of flakvests, which do diddly squat against a rifle. And even the Americans sung marching songs. Armies still do. It's a morale check.

From what I understand (as a proud Brit who bought the game), it wasn't really considered a big moral thing over here. I've asked around my friend group a little bit, and most of them just didn't buy the game because they'd been disappointed by every one of them since ACII (Which most still hold to be the best one, as do I), and they wanted to save their money for what they believe to be the far superior games that're coming out this month.
It wasn't really "I can't buy this and kill my fellow Brits!", it was more "Why would I touch fire if I've been burned twice? If I wanted to throw money away...", at least from what I've gathered.
Besides, most of the British characters don't even sound British, so I think if that was really the case, most Assassin's Creed fans would've just been able to tune it out.

running around with knives, pfft, it's all about pressing buttons nowadays.
    +1 for reference
Watch Dogs is pretty much the only release i'm going to be buying that's been announced this year. DX:HR was awesome, anything remotely like it or DLC would be awesome

The only guy who sounded British to me was Thomas Hickey.

Also, more notably, the British did wear red coats and travel in formation out in the open. One of the most famous attacks of the Crimean war was at the battle of Balaclava, and it was called 'The Thin Red Line' because it consisted a group of red coated line infantrymen. And when the British were still marching through America, they did travel out in the open, stealth would have been quite hard when they were all wearing bright red outfits.
Plus, as Dervish had said, everyone sang songs: It was a morale thing.
So if any Brits got offended by that, they were silly.

I realized I forgot the E in morale. It kind of changes the meaning of that sentence a wee bit.
