    An Opportunity (Scifi RP OOC)

    An Opportunity.

    An Opportunity.

That was how the ad began advertising spaces on the Vitaliy, one of four new Explorer Class Motherships. Not just explorer in name but explorer in purpose as well. The ad was open to anyone with a ship of their own, plus crew, open to exploring the galaxy beyond the known stars. The offers to berth the ship were more than generous and the corporate interest and investiture meant that they could afford it. A long term mission to explore the far reaches to go where the scientist think many millions may have been before, but nobody you know.

Even more attractive was the fact that little to no constraints existed on those who signed up for a Berth on the Vitaliy. The only major rules were that a Captain and his or her or its crew behaved themselves while on board the Vitaliy itself and to defend the Vitaliy should it come under attack. The Vitaliy itself would, in return, pretty much buy anything that the crews brought back which it would in turn sell on back to known space, keep the Captains ships supplied as well as they can and keep them in repair. And of course provide a good mess hall for ships without a cook with any real talent.

And now you find yourself, Captain or Crew, out here in the black waiting for the first chance to unload.

    The Vitaliy Command Crew

While the Command Crew of the Vitaliy is somewhat larger these four men represent the crux of the crew. On the left is Commander Orestes in charge of navigation and FTL travel. To his right is Commander Rosenthal in charge of the Engineering crew. To his immediate right is Captain Ashzlan Braeteke who serves as ultimately the final directing force. Though as it is a corporate venture he listens closely to his passengers. To his right is Commander Ravon in charge of the Vitaliy's Marines and the couple of rescue ships housed on board.

    Character Creation:
    The Rules

SHIP: A player must ask to see if they're allowed to be a Ship Captain, there are only 3-4 spaces for Player ships available and these spaces are reserved for my regulars first as they're familiar with how I run things and will make the best 'guides' so to speak. The instructions for making your ship are in the link above.

Player Crew. A player who is a captain can fill up to half his chosen crew complement with Crew using the sheet below. A player who is not a ship captain is in fact crew. BUT as in the document above they may choose two or even three specialties from those avaliable. However a player can NOT choose Captain or Mook as a specialty.

When a player has made their character (or characters) if they are not a Captain they have to find a ship that they're part of the crew for this involves asking the players who are captains for a berth on their ship. It is possible, if all players are ok with it, for a player character to change ships during the RP and socialisation between crews will probably happen on board.

Techology: Most technology is comparable to Star Wars or Warhammer 40'000 within reason. Cybernetics are common and popular. If you're unsure if an idea is allowed. Feel free to ask.

A rough size comparison for small, medium and large ships would be.

Small = Millennium Falcon. (Star Wars)
    Medium = Serenity (Firefly)
    Large = Defiant (Star Trek)

Will get a ship up and running, when I have time to properly spend some time on the rule set.
A lone figure standing in a room and a shadow is moving, closer and it closer it comes.

A blade flashes, a silent scream and the shadow is just a shadow once more.

Dark red blood is spilled and darkness rules the room as it always will.

    Here's my concept so far.

    Name: The Visible Hand
Appearance: We originally called it the Struggle Buggy. It didn't like that at all.
    Size: Large
    State of Repair: Great
    Crew: Minimal
    Engines: Average
    Weapons: High-Firepower
Drones- The Hand maintains a small semi-permanent detachment of fighter drones. Armed with light energy weapons these drones are dangerous due to their ability to coordinate their attacks, utilizing sophisticated firing patterns, almost dance-like and artistic, designed to destabilize many forms of shielding systems weakening them to fire from heavier ships or even striping them completely in the case of weaker systems. Against a large, unshielded ship the drones are even more effective, destroying exposed systems with frightful efficiency leaving most ships sightless and toothless in a matter of minutes. Additionally, most large ships point defense systems cannot efficaciously track the small, swift drones, giving such vessels no means of defending themselves. Conversely, the combat drones are significantly less effective to enemy fighter squadrons. Their complex attack strategies are wholly ineffective against fighters, forcing the drones to resort to scattering/swarm tactics which, while still quite dangerous and capable of tying up fighter squadrons, is merely a delaying tactic, a particularly costly one, against any half-way competent fighter pilots. Besides the fighter drones, the Hand also supports anti-personnel combat drones. These are mostly used to defend the Hand against enemy boarders, but can also be launched in bore-pods against enemy ship, where they can deal horrendous damage to enemy crew and systems. It is, however, worthy of note that the use of such drones is considered a war-crime in some areas of space, and even outside them, Tavi would have difficulty explaining to her partners why a prospecting vessel would have such drones at all.

Similar in design to their more aggressive cousins, the Hand maintains a network of defence drones which maintain a distance around the ship to intercept against enemy fire with their own point defence lasers. Though quite effective against missiles and projectiles, most energy weapons fire too quickly to protect against. Some of the drones are designed for shield projection however, and when able to anticipate a significant threats attack vector, they project a static shield to cover that location. Unfortunately, against small fighter craft, the drones weapons are too short ranged and make for easy targets in their tight formation. Though drawing fire away from the Hand is still usually of use in such cases.
Gravity Beams- Although technically not intended for combat, the Hand does have extremely powerful Mass Manipulation Projectors, mainly used to move natural objects such as asteroids for ease of mining, or damaged ships away from hazardous areas during repairs, the beams can also be used against enemy vessels, to slow or stop them dead in space. They can even cause sever structural damage to some smaller vessels if they are flying through a beam, sheer and with enough inertia. The beams are too ungainly to be used against fighters, though they can be tuned to release short-range gravitic pulses which can be quite destructive against such craft, though the distances involved and lack of precision make such a tactic situational and haphazard at best.
Electronic Suite- Though mostly used for more benign purposes, the Hand's robust information systems can be used to disrupt enemy communications, targeting, and combat-support systems, as well as feed useful telemetry to friendlies. Most military grade vessels have ECM systems too effective for this to change the course of a battle.

    Defences: Medium
Shields- The Hand uses a diffuse, particle shield that radiates away from the hull. The shield is designed to provide significant protection against enemy energy weapons, scattering their energy before their impact the Hand, while still allowing the Hand's drone swarms to continuously pass through to and from the ship. Unfortunately, this leaves the Hand vulnerable to kinetic-based weapons, relying on its screen of defence drones against such threats as well as the ships armored hull.

    Special Purpose Gear: Modular
Drones- While the combat drone forms utilized by the Hand are more notable in battle, the real utility of the Hand comes from its less martially oriented drones. In particular, a host of repair and refitting drones aboard the ship can provide shipyard level repairs and modifications to the Hand or other vessels with remarkable speed, given available materials, while most requisite parts can be manufactured in the same fabricators used by the Hand to maintain and manufacture its drone compliment.

    Crew Armament Level: BOOYA!
    History: More to come.

    Name: Tavi
Appearance: Unknown. Uses a number of android bodies when interacting with Analogs. Current most commonly used body looks something like this.

    Rank: Ship Master
    Sex: Female
Species: Rik. One of the most developed cultures in known space, the Rik achieved post-scarcity and post-organic status more than a millennium ago. Unconstrained by material need and unthreatened by the greater galactic community, the Rik are content to occupy their home worlds without concern for other species. Freed from baser means of power and control, Rik society is a social meritocracy, where influence and opinion are the closest they still have to currency. Unwilling to trade their technological advancements, the Rik's primary influence on the outside systems are their art and culture, which have become quite ingrained with the space faring community.
    Specialty: Captain
Weapons: The Hand is linked to Tavi, making it and its systems an extension of herself. Her drones provide almost all her personal defence.
Bio: Tavi walks the edge of obscurity and celebrity within this sector of space. One of the few of her people to leave their home systems, the reason for her departure is nebulous, but most bet it has something to do with her perpetual iconoclasm. More than likely, this blatant disregard produced friction within her cultures all-consuming game of prestige and one-upmanship. For Tavi's part, she seems to revel in the mystery, telling a different story each time she deigns to entertain the question at all.

Regardless of her relationship with the Rik, Tavi does seem to enjoy her travels about the galaxy greatly. With the advantage of the Hand behind her, she has thrown herself into the world of fringe exploration and exploitation. Discovering new systems, staking her claim to untapped resources, fighting off other opprotunists, scavengers, and belligerent natives seems to give Tavi endless enjoyment, and if it ever is found lacking, she is usually well entertained by the small, select group of passengers she allows to inhabit the small but lavish living quarters aboard the Hand. Picking them as much for their utility as their urbanity, her 'crew' are like herself, eclectic, interesting, and much more dangerous than most realise.

Does this Role-Play consider knowledge of FTL or any other outside source to enjoy? You've caught my interest. What kind of species are available to use?

    Huh.

Well, I have an idea for a ship and a captain, I think - more science and technology rather than guns and armor. I'd like to ask for a Captain slot, if you don't mind.

    Name: Raulein Ishtock (Rall-Een Ish-Toak)

Appearance: Raulein has deep green foliage that grows from his head. In the base of his skull a large violet flower grows. He has pitch black eyes, with purple iris's (A Foliagen's flower always matches their natural eye color). Raulein is about 5"7 and thin. He is quite light, weighing only 70 pounds because of his unique body structure. His facial structure though not made from flesh is very elf-like and elegant. Foliagen do not have anything resembling ears, they pick up sound from the vibrations of the sound sensitive leaves that grows from their head. Raulein often wears a white lab coat when he is performing his doctor's duties, or more casual wear when he is performing work as a cook or otherwise working in the ship.

    Rank: Crew

    Sex: Male (Though technically genderless)

Species: Foliagen. A plant based species. However, unlike most plants they have the ability to move independently of soil. They are sentient and capable of speech, though due to their methods of speech which involve vibrating leaves inside their 'throat' their voice sounds much like a wood-wind instrument. Foliagen musicians are quite popular partially thankful to this. They are often colored different shades of green with foliage growing from their heads. They body is mostly comprised of a green vine like substance, and in the center of their skull rests a flower with patterns unique to every Foliagen. It's treated like their fingerprint, and included on all Foliagen ID for identification. Their eyes are a pitch black, with a singularly colored pupil that matches the color of their flower (the flowers can be all colors of the spectrum, with the exception of black and brown.) Foliagen can have long lifespans, but that depends on the health of the environment. While Foliagen spices are useful for healing and cooking, a Foliagen can spray a cloud of it from their flower as a natural defense mechanism. It isn't deadly but it irritates the lungs if breathed in directly and causes uncontrollable sneezing.

There are some unique perks to being a Foliagen. They do not require oxygen. They instead take in Carbon Dioxide and breathe out oxygen like earth based vegetation. The air on a ship with a Foliagen resident is always being replenished causing the air to have a certain freshness crews appreciate. However, Foliagen do require a clean source of water to keep their strength up. The previously mentioned flower in the base of the Foliagen's head produce a unique spice which is useful for both medicinal and culinary uses. Foliagen can also regrow limbs and survive certain attacks that species based in flesh and bone might not survive, but they are more weak to toxins and have a strong aversion to fire and extreme cold. Foliagen get their energy from sunlight and water, but they can also eat food to keep their strength up if needed. Artificial light is sufficient but natural light is ideal in their growth. Foliagen will root themselves to soil to rest, but the only benefit of is that it increases the rate at which they regenerate limbs; they can regrow 3 quarters of a lost arm in a single night in a typical space ship environment, even faster in more natural conditions.

    Specialty: Doctor, Cook

    Weapons:
Foliagen Powder: a harmless yellow pollen that causes uncontrollable sneezing if inhaled. Great for distracting opponents. Can be fired in clouds from the flower on top of their heads but the more it is used consecutively the less potent it is.

Revitalizer: A gun like device that is usually used to restart the heart beat of someone in intense care. Not usually seen as a weapon, but Raul's revitalizer was given a.. slightly less then legal modification. He can turn up the voltage, causing to to instead fire a concentrated ball of electricity a good distance. It's power is only equal to a basic hand-held firearm, but it can do a number on machinery that isn't properly protected.

Bio: Raulein was born on his native planet Chaun within a large community of others of his race. They were a peaceful race who appreciated nature. They welcomed other races to their planet with open arms and created agreements for exchange of resources. However, after a few years of the agreement standing strong, the natural resources began to disappear at an alarming rate. Pollution levels started to rise which endangered the Foliagen and their way of life. Raulein was a prominent figure in the political struggle to improve the conditions of their planet. Peaceful request and protest was the first response but the situation continued to worsen. Eventually the race of peaceful plant-people realized that they wouldn't listen to reason, and for the first time in thousands of years they took up more violent means of spreading the message.

Raulein acted as a doctor in the struggle. He appreciates life in all forms, and didn't enjoy taking it unless he had no other option. Raul is quite a good judge of character, and has always been skilled at negotiations. After a year of stalemate between his race and that of their enemy, Raulein was an important figurehead for bringing about a truce and an agreement between the two factions. Raulein's calm and agreeable conduct earned the favor of his people. The Foliagens once again regained control of their land, and they now had full control of how much of a resource was being traded. Raul watched over and managed the process of bringing the planet Chaun back to health for a year after the conflict ended. However, they were shocked when Raul made the sudden decision to leave his home planet and to explore the universe and to meet new people.

When the chance to join a crew and to explore the deep breaches of space appeared, he couldn't refuse. This seemed like the best opportunity to meet new people and form new alliances that Raul would find. He signed up as a cook and a doctor, hoping that his unique talents would make him look like an appealing crew mate.

Now If you'll excuse me, I need me some sleep. Feel free to leave any suggestions you might have.

    Ok. In order.
A: There is no "Perpetual" state of repair choice. Best you can get is great.
B: Your Crew cannot be "Mostly automated", the rules document gives you the options to choose from.
C: Your Weapons, Defences and Special Purpose and Crew Armament Level gear also aren't covered in the rules provided. While it is certainly possible that your descriptions cover those, I need you to use the format provided by the document as this is the measure by which ships are stacked against one another.

But as interesting as it is, since you didn't use the rules provided I'm disinclined to give you a Ship Captain place.

Tenshi was right about species being relatively open, FTL is well known and player ships do have a limited one. So *moves onto sheet*
