Rook already became slightly excited as they departed and he saw the Genesis becoming smaller and smaller, eventually disappearing into the empty void of space. Nearing the planet, the company was mostly silent, everyone deep in their thoughts, or more likely, conversing and discussing the coming mission with their AIs. When Seraph answered Raiden's question, he could only agree with her statement.
"Besides, what would a Praetorian really need beyond those nifty armors anyway?" Rook said, not sure if he was contributing to the conversation or simply admiring his suit.
A slight vibration could be felt throughout the Godfather as they entered the planet’s atmosphere and LEE notified Rook of the increased temperature outside; or inside. Not that it really mattered, but it was nonetheless important to know what was happening to those not tucked away in the armor. Looking at the Captain and his Lieutenant, Rook remembered those marines sent on the planet before them. What could possibly have happened to them down there? The question was soon answered when the Lieutenant spoke of getting explosions on the radar and picking up a radio signal only moments later. The situation seemed dire as a group of marines were struggling to hold their positions inside a building – all neatly displayed on a holographic image of the battleground below.
”So much for a recon mission, then, huh? Rook remarked, the sudden change in objectives came as a slight surprise for him. Or rather, he wasn’t expecting an old-fashion shootout the second they’d be arriving on location.
”At least those guys might have an idea of what’s going on.”
Despite the constantly rising tension, Rook sat still, examining the battleground and mentally preparing himself for the upcoming confrontation. Until one of them, Seraph, stood up and declared she was going to jump straight down there for assistance.
Yep, she’s mad, was the first thing Rook could think of, but it took him a few seconds to conclude that her idea wasn’t exactly impossible, but still halfway insane.
“We could do it too”, LEE said with her calculated voice, ”but it wouldn't be very effective as a surprise cavalry.”
“Ever heard of the Ascension program?” Rook cut off LEE’s trail of thought, switching from brainstorming ideas how to best descend 10,000 feet to wondering about this new and exciting power Seraph mentioned.
As the airlock flew open, Rook was still wondering what was going to go down next. It didn’t cross his mind to ask what would a lone Praetorian do against such a massive force anyway, but he believed in the power of the Praetorians, so she would at least have a clue of what she was doing.
“She sure likes to show off… or the rest of us might as well go home,” Rook said jokingly after Seraph had disappeared from the doorframe, keeping his eyes on the camera feed looking over Seraph.
“What about us, sir? We going to sit here and wait or at least get some info about the troops pinned down? Anything about the enemy?”
Indeed there was no time to lose, especially with one of them down there now, they would need to be fast and efficient in pushing back the opposing force.
