Before you go any further, you may want to read this: Yes, this RP is based off an manga/anime. However, all of the events in the manga/anime will be discounted. One does NOT have to have read/watched Death Note in order to participate in this Role Play. It would actually be encouraged that people who are not familiar with the manga/anime to participate. This is because some people who have read/watched it might have tunnel vision and will have a hard time thinking of characters and motivations that are not the same as the manga/anime.
"I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away"
Introduction:
"Christ Matt, I'm not talking about super powers. There are comics about super heroes without super powers. I get those are just 'heroes' but it's the same shit. Why aren't there vigilantes out there like The Punisher or something? He doesn't have a super power. He is just well-trained and kicks some serious ass. And he doesn't fight some villain with magical powers, unless he's in a cross over. He fights mobsters and shit."
Ken was rambling now as he thumbed through an old comic of The Avengers. He didn't bother looking up at his friend who was sitting across the room. His friend, Matt, was a young man of 17 years. Matt's face was twisted with doubt.
"Because the cops and shit would be on him faster than fuck," Matt sniffed.
"Whatever. I'm just saying..." Ken's voice trailed off and he took a sip of his beer. It was a Saturday, and, as usual, they had nothing better to do than have a few drinks, play video games, eat Cheetos, and talk about comics. There was an awkward silence after that for a short time until Ken started a new conversation about who was hotter, Super Girl or Ms. Marvel. Yet, his curiosity about real superheros was still in the back of his mind. It always was.
Dawn came quickly and Matt was falling asleep when Ken decided to make his way home. Living only five minutes down the street, he was used to stumbling home inebriated. Shouldering his backpack full of video games and comics, he began to make his way down the block. Everything was still dark despite the lightening sky in the east. The darkness played around Ken's eyes, making it hard to walk in his stupor. Shadows in the alleyways danced and played, facetiously threatening him when he heard a clang of metal and concrete. He nearly jumped out of his skin at the sound and it took more than a few seconds for him to recollect himself. Slightly embarrassed, he decided to find out what made the noise. Drunken logic told him that if it were something worth getting scared over, he could save his personal dignity.
Facing the alleyway he took a breath. A step forward and he was engulfed in darkness, hiding him from the rest of the waking world. Warily he crept through the alley; his eyes wide as if opening them more would give him the ability to see in the dark. It coulda been a bum or a cat or something, he thought. But his mind went to the monsters in video games and comics. Demons and cravens. He was just reaching the end of the alley when something hard fell on his shoulder.
"Fuck!" he called out as every muscle in his body tightened. When he turned to see what had touched his shoulder he found a black book laying on the floor beside him. The words Death Note were etched across it. Looking around, he could not see where the book had come from. There were no windows on the walls that surrounded him. The alley was a dead end and there was no place for a man to hide.
"Christ," he sighed aloud as he picked up the mystery book up. Carefully, he examined the cover but found nothing else but the two words. When he opened it he found something even odder. Seven bullets points with what appeared to be rules.
"The human whose name is written in this note shall die... This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected" Ken read. "Is this some sort of game?"
He looked around once more, scanning the buildings. A large black silhouette caught his eye high above, just over the tops of the buildings. It had the shape of man with twisted limbs and large black wings that spanned twice the length of his body. Ken only got a quick look at it before it disappeared. He shuddered and told himself he was too drunk for all this. He stuffed the book in his bag and ran out of the alley and back home as fast as his unsteady legs could carry him.
Background:
Setting:
The setting will take place in New York City. This city is one of the busiest cities in North America. Manhattan, the island to the east, is littered with Skyscrapers and honking cars. The other borroughs are jam packed with houses and apartment buildings along with shopping centers and malls. There is no dearth of violent crimes in the city along with corrupted politicians. Drugs and prostitution are things that are not hard to find. It's not all bad though. There are some museums and parks and stuff... I guess.
Shinigami:
Shinigami (Gods of Death), are a race of extra-dimensional beings who survive by killing humans to extend their own lives. Shinigami are not responsible for every death that occurs; people will eventually die regardless of whether or not the Shinigami pay attention to them, but a Shinigami can end their lives sooner than intended to extend their own lifespan.
Shinigami vary widely in appearance, and their bodies are built in ways that would seem impossible by Earthly standards. Although some Shinigami do not appear to have limbs capable of holding objects, all Shinigami are able to hold and write with a pen in order to use their Death Note. Shinigami are capable of flight and use wings as a mode of transportation, especially in the Human World. When their wings are not in use, they retract.
Shinigami each have a unique personality and level of intelligence. Each Shinigami has his or her own written language, with some opting for letters and some opting for pictures. All Shinigami can understand the languages of one another. Some Shinigami can also speak, read and write in Earthly languages.
Shinigami have jobs, although they do not have a required amount of work to do. Their main job is to find humans they can take life from, and write their name in their death note. Some Shinigami tend to forget to write names down and some actually die because of this. Shinigami can save other humans they care about if that person is about to die. But the purpose of a Shinigami is to end life, not give it—any Shinigami who violates this nature will perish. Shinigami who die are reduced to dust, and their remaining lifespan is given to the human they saved. Under normal circumstances, a Shinigami will live forever.
Shinigami may be male or female. Shinigami cannot and are not permitted to have sexual relations with humans nor can they have sexual intercourse with each other. They also cannot reproduce. However, Shinigami may have emotions relating to the opposite sex. For instance, A Shinigami may feel shy and embarrassed when a human of the opposite sex hugs it. In addition, humans cannot easily tell which Shinigami are male and which Shinigami are female, although Shinigami know each others gender instinctively.
While Shinigami possess senses of taste similar to those of humans, they do not need to eat food. This is because their organs have rotted—or perhaps evolved—to the point where they can no longer gain nutrition from what they consume. In addition, Shinigami do not need to sleep and will not die from a lack of sleep. It is said that Shinigami view sleeping as "evidence of laziness."
Shinigami can materialize and dematerialize their bodies at will, and are capable of walking through walls and other objects. The only humans that will see this phenomenon are the ones who have touched a Death Note (i.e. only cantact with a Death Note will allow you to see a Shinigami). Physical attacks are useless against a Shinigami, therefore attacking one with something such as a gun will have no affect; the bullets will go right through the Shinigami.
The main thing all Shinigami have in common is the Death Note. This supernatural notebook allows them to end the lives of humans before their times, adding the human's remaining lifespans to their own. In this manner, a Shinigami can extend their lives indefinitely. To assist in this, their eyes allow them to see the names and remaining lifespans of humans by seeing the faces of their victims. They are able to give Shinigami Eyes to the human they posess, in exchange for half of that humans remaining lifespan (i.e. a human which is supposed to live 40 more years will lose 20 years of their life in order to recieve the Shinigami Eyes. The twenty years the human loses are given to the Shinigami that they are making the trade with). Shinigami give this ability to the human by placing their open hand above the humans head.
All Shinigami must possess at least one Death Note, a necessity to extend their lives. Should they manage to come across a second, it should—at least in principle—be returned to the Shinigami King. When a Death Note is dropped in the Human World, humans who pick up the notebook may use that Death Note to kill others. If a notebook ever reaches the human world and is picked up by a human, the Shinigami must accompany the human until they die or the Death Note is willingly given back. Shinigami can explain the purpose of the Death Note to the human, but this is done at their discretion.
The Death Note:
A Death Note is a supernatural notebook which is used by Shinigami to sustain their life. The appearance of a Death Note is chosen by the Shinigami, and there are several different Death Note designs. Most Death Note's are plain black and do not have writing on the cover, however Shinigami sometimes write their name on it or the words such as "Death Note". Those that do contain writing on the front can have the words written in any language, such as English or a Shinigami language. Other cover designs may exist as well, but that would be completely up to the Shinigami owning that particular Death Note. Death Notes which are red or white exist, although they are rare. Death Note's can also take a form other than a notebook, such as a scroll.
The inside of a notebook looks like that of a school notebook, and contains ruled white pages. The notebook is activated when someones name is written in it. Regardless of how many names are written in it, the notebook will never run out of pages. Death Notes are made from an unknown material, however they feel and look like regular notebooks and it is possible to rip and burn the pages. Human science cannot analyze a Death Note.
The purpose of the Death Note is to take Human life, thereby increasing the life of the Shinigami who uses it. There are many rules as to how the Death Note can be used, though the most pivotal rule is that "The Human whose name is written in this note shall die."
Shinigami normally use Death Notes to kill humans from the Shinigami Realm, thereby adding each human's remaining years of life to their own. Rogue Shinigami are Shinigami who drop extra Death Note(s) from the Shinigami Realm down to the human world in order to allow humans the use of their spare killer notebook(s). It is unknown how many notebooks exist in the Shinigami Realm, as well as how Death Notes are created.
A Death Note can be used by a human, although their lifespans do not increase by doing so. Historically, humans have either killed other humans with the Death Note(s) or ended up burning and therefore destroying the Death Note for any number of reasons.
Here are the Rules to the Death Note:
How to Use: I
The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person’s name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
How to Use: II
The notebook shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground of (arrives in) the human world.
The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of the original owner, i.e. a God of death/Shinigami.
The human who uses the notebook can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.
How to Use: III
If the time of death is written within 40 seconds after writing the cause of death as a heart attack, the time of death can be manipulated, and the time can go into effect within 40 seconds after writing the name.
The human who touches the Death Note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, a Shinigami, even if the human is not the owner of the note.
How to Use: IV
The person in possession of the Death Note is possessed by a god of death, its original owner, until they die.
If a human uses the note, a god of death usually appears in front of him/her within 39 days after he/she uses the note.
Gods of Death, the original owners of the Death Note, do not do, in principle, anything which will help or prevent the deaths in the note.
A Shinigami has no obligation to completely explain how to use the note or rules which will apply to the human who owns it unless asked.
How to Use: V
A Shinigami can extend their own life by putting a name on their own note, but humans cannot.
A person can shorten his/her own life by using the note.
The human who becomes the owner of the Death Note can, in exchange of half his/her remaining life, get the eyes of the Shinigami which will enable him/her to see a human’s name and remaining life span when looking through them.
A god of death cannot be killed even if stabbed in his heart with a knife or shot in the head with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a Shinigami, which are not generally known to the Shinigami.
How to Use: VI
The conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.
The specific scope of the condition for death is not known to the Shinigami, either. So, you must examine and find out.
How to Use: VII
One page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note.
The instrument to write with can be anything, ((e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc.)) as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters.
Even the original owners of Death Note, Shinigami, do not know much about the note.
How to Use: VIII
You may also write the cause and/or details of death prior to filling in the name of the individual. Be sure to insert the name in front of the written cause of death. You have about 19 days (according to the human calendar) in order to fill in a name.
Even if you do not actually possess the Death Note, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and his/her name to place in the blank.
How to Use: IX
The Death Note will not affect those under 780 days old.
The Death Note will be rendered useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times.
If the victim's name was misspelled on purpose four or more times, the user along with the victim will die.
How to Use: X
“Suicide” is a valid cause of death. Basically, all humans are thought to possess the possibility to commit suicide. It is, therefore, not something “unbelievable to think of."
Whether the cause of the individual’s death is either a suicide or accident. If the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced.
How to Use: XI
Even after the individual’s name, the time of death, and death condition on the Death Note were filled out, the time and condition of death can be altered as many times as you want, as long as it is changed within 6 minutes and 40 seconds from the time it was filled in. But, of course, this is only possible before the victim dies.
Whenever you want to change anything written on the Death Note within 6 minutes and 40 seconds after you wrote, you must first rule out the characters you want to erase with two straight lines.
As you see above, the time and conditions of death can be changed, but once the victim’s name has been written, the individual’s death can never be avoided.
How to Use: XII
If you lose the Death Note or have it stolen, you will lose its ownership unless you retrieve it within 490 days.
If you have traded the eye power of a god of death, you will lose the eye power as well as the memory of the Death Note, once you lose its ownership. At the same time, the remaining half of your life will not be restored.
How to Use: XIII
You may lend the Death Note to another person while maintaining its ownership. Subletting it to yet another person is possible, too. This also allows the person in current possession of the note to trade for the eyes of the Shinigami.
The borrower of the Death Note will not be followed by a god of death. The God of Death always remains with the owner of the Death Note. (although the Shinigami is not obligated to.)
How to Use: XIV
When the owner of the Death Note dies while the Note is being lent, its ownership will be transferred to the person who is holding it at that time.
If the Death Note is stolen and the owner is killed by the thief, its ownership will automatically be transferred to the thief.
How to Use: XV
When the same name is written on more than two Death Notes, the note which was first filled in will take effect, regardless of the time of death.
If writing the same name on more than two Death Notes is completed within 0.06 seconds, it is regarded as simultaneous; the Death Note will not take effect and the individual written will not die.
How to Use: XVI
The God of Death must at least own one Death Note. That Death Note must never be lent to or written on by a human.
Exchanging and writing on the Death Note between the gods of death is no problem.
How to Use: XVII
If the God of Death decides to use the Death Note to kill the assassin of an individual he favors, the individuals life will be extended, but the God of Death will die.
The dead God of Death will disappear, but the Death Note will remain. The ownership of this Death Note is usually carried over to the next god of death that touches it, or is kept in possession of the human owner of the Death Note.
How to Use: XVIII
Only by touching each other’s Death Note can human individuals who own the Death Note in the human world recognize the appearance or voice of each other’s God of Death.
An individual with the eye power of a god of death can tell the name and life span of other humans by looking at that person’s face. By possessing the Death Note, an individual gains the ability to kill, and stops being a victim. From this point, a person with the Death Note cannot see the life span of other Death Note owners, but they will not be able to see his/her own life span.
The God of Death must not tell humans the names or life spans of individuals he/she sees. This is to avoid confusion in the human world.
How to Use: XIX
It is prerequisite for the Death Note used in the human world that a living god of death makes sure that the humans in the human world uses it.
It is very difficult to consider that a god of death who has possessed a human could die, but if he should die, the Death Note that he brought into the human world will not lose its power.
How to Use: XX
In order to see the names and life spans of humans by using the eye power of the god of death, the owner must look at more than half of that person’s face. When looking from top to bottom, he must look at least from the head to the nose. If he looks at only the eyes and under, he will not be able to see the person’s name and life span. Also, even though some parts of the face, for example the eyes, nose or mouth are hidden, if he can basically see the whole face, he will be able to see the person’s name and life span. It is still not clear how much exposure is needed to tell a person's name and life span, as this needs to be verified.
If the above conditions are met, names and life spans can be seen through photos and pictures, no matter how old they are. But this is sometimes influenced by the vividness and size. Also, names and life spans cannot be seen by face drawings, however realistic they may be.
When a human dies, a Death Note owner with the eye's of a God Of Death can no longer see the deceased human's life span and name in photos and videos.
How to Use: XXI
Those with the eye power of the god of death will have the eyesight of over 3.6 in the human measurement, regardless of their original eyesight.
How to Use: XXII
The individuals who lose the ownership of the Death Note will also lose their memory of the usage of the Death Note. This does not mean that he will lose all the memory from the day he owned it to the day he loses possession, but means he will only lose the memory involving the Death Note.
How to Use: XXIII
When an individual with ownership of more than two Death Notes loses possession to one of the Death Notes, he will not be able to recognize that Death Note’s god of death’s appearance or voice anymore. The god of death himself will leave, but all the memory involving that Death Note will remain as long as he maintains ownership of at least one other Death Note.
How to Use: XXIV
The god of death must not stay in the human world without a particular reason. Conditions to stay in the human world are as follows:
When the god of death’s Death Note is handed to a human.
Essentially, finding a human to pass on the Death Note should be done from the world of the gods of death, but if it is within 82 hours this may also be done in the human world.
When a god of death stalks an individual with an intention to kill them, as long as it is within 82 hours of haunting them, the god of death may stay in the human world.
How to Use: XXV
The god of death must not hand the Death Note directly to a child under 6 years of age (based on the human calendar).
The Death Note must not be handed to a child under 6 years of age, but Death Notes that have been dropped into the human world, and are part of the human world, can be used upon humans of any age with the same effect.
How to Use: XXVI
If you just write, “die of accident” for the cause of death, the victim will die from a natural accident after 6 minutes and 40 seconds from the time of writing it.
Even though only one name is written in the Death Note, if it influences and causes other humans that are not written in it to die, the victim’s cause of death will be a heart attack.
How to Use: XXVII
If you write, “die of disease” with a specific disease’s name and the person’s time of death, there must be a sufficient amount of time for the disease to progress. If the set time is too tight, the victim will die of a heart attack after 6 minutes and 40 seconds after completing the Death Note.
If you write, “die of disease” for the cause of death, but only write a specific time of death without the actual name of disease, the human will die from an adequate disease. But the Death Note can only operate within 23 days (in the human calendar). This is called the 23-day rule.
How to Use: XXVIII
If you write, “die of disease” like before with a specific disease’s name, but without a specific time, if it takes more than 24 days for the human to die the 23-day rule will not take effect and the human will die at an adequate time depending on the disease.
When rewriting the cause and/or details of death it must be done within 6 minutes and 40 seconds. You cannot change the victim’s time of death, however soon it may be.
How to Use: XXIX
You cannot kill humans at the age of 124 or over with the Death Note.
You cannot kill humans with less than 12 minutes of life left (in human calculations).
How to Use: XXX
If you have traded the eye power of a god of death, you will see a person’s primary life span in the human world.
The names you will see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person isn’t registered in the family registration.
How to Use: XXXI
The number of pages of the Death Note will never run out.
This is so that the user isn't restricted to his/her killings and therefore making the notebook useless once ran out of pages.
How to Use: XXXII
If someone possesses more than one Death Note, by visualizing the victim, then writing down the name in one of the Death Notes and the cause of death in the other, it will take effect. The order however, is unimportant, if you write down the cause of death in one Death Note and afterwards, write the name in the other, it will take effect.
This can also be accomplished by two Death Note owners working together. In this case, it’s necessary that the two touch each other’s Death Notes.
How to Use: XXXIII
If a person loses possession of a Death Note, they will not recognize the gods of death by sight or voice any more. If however, the owner lets someone else touch his Death Note, from that time on, that person will recognize the god of death.
In accordance with the above, the human who touched the Death Note and began to recognize the gods of death’s image and voice, will continue to recognize it until that human actually owns the Death Note and subsequently loses possession of it.
How to Use: XXXIV
The owner of the Death Note cannot be killed by a god of death who is living in the world of the gods of death.
Also, a god of death who comes to the human world, in the objective to kill the owner of the Death Note, will not be able to do so.
Only a god of death that has passed on their Death Note to a human is able to kill the owner of the Death Note.
How to Use: XXXV
If a Death Note owner accidentally misspells a name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the Death Note. However, if they intentionally misspell the name four times, the Death Note owner will die.
The person whose name was misspelled four times on purpose will not be free of death by a Death Note.
How to Use: XXXVI
There are male and female gods of death, but it is neither permitted, nor possible for them to have sexual relations with humans. The gods of death also cannot have sex with each other.
How to Use: XXXVII
When regaining ownership of the Death Note, the memories associated with the Death Note will also return. In cases where you were involved with other Death Notes as a well, memories of all the Death Notes involved will return.
Even without obtaining ownership, memories will return just by touching the Death Note. The whole Death Note it can not be a piece or a page.
How to Use: XXXVIII
You will lose memory of the Death Note when losing its ownership. But you can regain this memory by either obtaining the ownership once again or by touching the Death Note. This can be done up to 6 times per Death Note.
If the 6 times are exceeded, the person’s memory of the Death Note will not return and they will have to use it without any previous memory of it.
How to Use: XXXIX
Humans that have traded for the eye power of a god of death will see a person’s primary life span, and will not be influenced by the Death Note. If the victim is killed using the Death Note, the remaining lifetime of that victim will be provided to the god of death.
How to Use: XL
Whenever a god of death who had been in the human world dies the Death Note is left behind and is picked up by a human, that person becomes the owner.
However, in this case, only human that can recognize the god of death and its voice is able to see and touch the Death Note.
It is very unlikely, but if by any chance a god of death picks up the Death Note, that god of death becomes the owner.
How to Use: XLI
The names you see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see their names even if they aren't listed in a family register.
The use of the Death Note in the human world sometimes affects other human’s lives or shortens their original life-span, even though their names are not actually written in the Death Note itself. In these cases, no matter the cause, the god of death sees only the original life-span and not the shortened life-span.
How to Use: XLII
It is useless trying to erase names written in the Death Note with erasers or white-out.
If a Death Note is owned in the human world against the god of death’s will, that god of death is permitted to stay in the human world in order to retrieve it.
In that case, if there are other Death Notes in the human world, the gods of death are not allowed to reveal to the humans that Death Note's owner or its location.
How to Use: XLIII
If the Death Note that the god of death owns is taken away by being cheated by other gods of death and so forth, it can only be retrieved from the god of death who possesses it at the time. If there is no god of death, but a human possessing it, the only way that the god of death can retrieve it will be to first touch the Death Note and become the god of death that haunts that human. Then wait until that human dies to take it away before any other human touches it, or whenever the human shows a will to let go of it.
How to Use: XLIV
As long as the god of death has at least once seen a human and knows his/her name and life-span, the god of death is capable of finding that human from a hole in the world of the gods of death.
How to Use: XLV
There are laws in the world of gods of death. If a god of death should break the law, there are 9 levels of severity starting at Level 8 and going up to Level 1 plus the Extreme Level. For severity levels above 3 the god of death will be killed after being punished.
For example, killing a human without using the Death Note is considered as the Extreme Level.
How to Use: XLVI
Losing memory of the Death Note by passing on the ownership to another, or by abandoning its ownership will only occur when someone is actually killed using that Death Note. You will not lose memory of the Death Note, for example, if you merely owned it and had not written anyone’s name. In this case, you will not be able to hear the voice or see the figure of the god of death any more. You will also lose the eye power of the god of death you traded with.
How to Use: XLVII
The god of death will not die from lack of sleep. Moreover, gods of death do not really need sleep. The meaning of sleep for gods of death is essentially different from humans and is merely laziness.
Especially gods of death living in the human world that have passed on their Death Note shouldn’t be lazy, as they are required to see the death of the human, but it is not that they are not allowed to sleep.
How to Use: XLIII
Only 6 Death Notes are allowed to exist at a time in the human world. Of course, the Death Note that the god of death owns does not count. This means only 6 gods of death that have passed on their Death Note to humans can stay in the human world.
How to Use: XLIX
One god of death is allowed to pass on Death Notes to only 3 humans at a time.
It is possible for a single god of death to hand out up to 6 Death Notes, for example, by handing 3 humans 2 Death Notes each.
In other words, one human could own all 6 Death Notes.
How to Use: L
However, if a seventh Death Note is owned by a human in the human world, nothing will happen even if used unless the shinigami gains one of the 6 death notes handed out then that death note is able to be used.
How to Use: LI
In the event that there are more than 6 Death Notes in the human world, only the first 6 Death Notes that have been delivered to humans will have effect.
The seventh Death Note will not become active until one of the other 6 Death Notes are burned up, or a god of death takes one of them back to the world of the gods of death.
How to Use: LII
The Death Note will not take effect if you write a specific victims name using several different pages.
But the front and back of a page is considered as one page. For example, the Death Note will still take effect if you write the victim's surname on the front page and given name on the back.
How to Use: LIII
In order to make the Death Note take effect, the victim's name must be written on the same page, but the cause of death and situation around the death can be described in other pages of Death Note. This will work as long as the person that writes in the Death Note keeps the specific victims name in mind when writing the cause and situation of death.
How to Use: LIV
In occasions where the cause and situation of death is written before the victim’s name, multiple names can be written as long as they are written within 40 seconds and the causes and situations of death are not impossible to occur.
In the occasion where the cause of death is possible but the situation is not, only the cause of death will take effect for that victim. If both the cause and the situation are impossible, that victim will die of heart attack.
How to Use: LV
When you write multiple names in the Death Note and then write down even one cause of death within 40 human seconds from writing the first victims name, the cause will take effect for all the written names.
Also, after writing the cause of death, even if the situation of death is written within 6 minutes and 40 seconds in the human world, the situation will only occur to the victims whom it is possible. For those where the situation is not possible, only the cause of death will occur.
How to Use: LVI
In the Death Note, you cannot set the death date longer than the victim’s original life span. Even if the victim’s death is set in the Death Note beyond his/her original life span, the victim will die before the set time.
How to Use: LVII
By manipulating the death of a human that has influence over another human’s life, that human’s original life span can sometimes be lengthened.
If a god of death intentionally does the above manipulation to effectively lengthen a human’s life span, the god of death will die, but even if a human does the same, the human will not die.
How to Use: LVIII
A human death caused by Death Note will indirectly lengthen some other human’s original life even without a specific intention to lengthen a particular person’s original life span in the human world.
How to Use: LIX
After a god of death has brought the Death Note to the human world and given its ownership to a human, that god of death has the right to kill the human using his/her own Death Note for reasons such as disliking the owner.
How to Use: LX
Even if a new victim’s name, cause of death, or situation of death is written on top of the originally written name, cause of death or situation of death, there will be no effect on the original victim’s death. The same thing will also apply to erasing what was written with a pencil, or whitening out what was written with a pen, in attempt to rewrite it.
How to Use: LXI
Once the victim’s name, cause of death and situation of death have been written down in the Death Note, this death will still take place even if that Death Note or the part of the note in which it has been written is destroyed, for example, burned into ashes, before the stated time of death.
If the victim’s name has been written and then the Death Note is destroyed in the middle of writing the cause of death, the victim will be killed by heart attack in 40 seconds after writing the name.
If the victim’s name and cause of death have been written and the middle of writing the situation of death, then the victim will be killed within 6 minutes and 40 seconds via the stated cause of death if the cause is possible within that period of time, but otherwise, the victim will die by heart attack.
How to Use: LXII
No matter what medical or scientific method may be employed, it is impossible for humans to distinguish whether or not the human has the eye of power of a god of death. Even gods of death cannot distinguish this fact, except for the very god of death that traded his/her eye power with that human.
How to Use: LXIII
The following situations are the cases where a god of death that has brought the Death Note into the human world is allowed to return to the world of gods of death:
When the god of death has seen the end of the first owner of the Death Note brought into the human world and has written that human’s name on his/her own Death Note.
When the Death Note which has been brought in is destroyed, like burned, and cannot be used by humans anymore.
If nobody claims the ownership of the Death Note, and it is unnecessary to haunt anyone.
If, for any reason, the god of death possessing the Death Note has been replaced by another god of death.
When the god of death loses track of the Death Note which he/she possesses, cannot identify which human is owning the Death Note, or cannot locate where the owner is, and therefore needs to find such information through the hole in the world of gods of death.
Even in the situations 2, 3, and 4 above, gods of death are obliged to confirm the death of the first owner and write down that humans name in his/her Death Note even when he/she is in the world of gods of death.
How to Use: LXIV
In the world of gods of death there are a few copies of what humans may call user guidebook for using the Death Note in the human world. However, the guidebook is not allowed to be delivered to humans.
It is perfectly okay for gods of death to read the guidebook for him/herself and teach humans about its contents, no matter what the content may include
How to Use: LXV
Some limited number of Death Notes have white or red front covers, but they would make no difference in their effects, as compared with the black cover Death Notes.
END
All humans, without exception, will eventually die.
After they die, the place they go to is MU (nothingness).
Once dead, they can never come back to life.

TL;DR the Above/Basics of the Role Play
Alright, in this role play, one or two people (depending on the amount of people who apply to the game) will have a Death Note. This Death Note can kill anyone whose name is written in it. However, this Death Note has rules to it. For example, the writer must visualize the person's face when writing the name. Also, the cause of death can also be written. This ability too has some rules such as the cause of death must be possible for that person in order for it to happen. Obviously these rules can get quite complex. For example, how much of the person's face must one know for them to be able to kill them? Is suicide possible for everyone or only people who are actually suicidal? Both these questions indeed have answers thanks to a very long and comprehensive list of rules that follow the death note (Above). I know most of the rules so don't worry, you don’t have to know them all. I will catch someone who uses the note in the wrong way.
This Death Note is actually a tool used by Shinigami (Death Gods). These Gods, who reside in another world, use this book to kill humans. When they do so, the remainder of that human's normal life is added to their own (This does not happen when a Human uses the book). When a Shinigami drops their book in the human world and a human finds it, the Death God cannot take it back until the human returns it to the Shinigami or the human dies. Each Shinigami owns only one note. The Shinigami are also invisible to all humans. However, anyone who touches a death note can see the Shinigami who owned the book.
Furthermore, the Shinigami can see humans' life spans. The remaining time a human has left to live floats above their head as a countdown, invisible to all but the Shinigami. A Shinigami can give this power to a human who is in possession of the death note at the price of half that human's life.
Not many know how to kill a Shinigami, even the Shinigami themselves. However, some know that if a Shinigami does anything to save a human from their death, the Shinigami will die.
The object of this Role Play is to either help the person with the Death Note achieve his goal or to stop him. Keep in mind, if you do stop him, the Death Note compels humans to use it once they have it. So a once straight cop might now use it to help him with his cases.
Players:
Death Note User: The player who is in possession of the Death Note can use it how they’d like. However, I’d ask that you DO use it to the point where it would cause the attention of the police. There should also be some sort of goal the death note user wants to accomplish. For example, one may use it to get vengeance on certain peoples. Others might use it to purge the world of evil. There are many ways to use the Note. For example, if I end up using the character portrayed above (which I am thinking I will at least to start), he will use it to act as a sort of super hero. Let’s try to be creative with this.
Now, there will obviously be other parties in this role play. If you have any idea for a certain party that you think might have an interesting involvement in the story, let me know.
Law Enforcement: The most obvious one is any type of law enforcement. You can be a genius private investigator or you can be a group of specialists. You can be an average cop or a vigilante of sorts. I will allow anyone playing this role to have 3-6 characters at their disposal depending on each characters skills and the skill of the Role Player.
Later it is possible to have other parties depending on where the story goes. There is a good chance your character WILL die. So feel free to apply again as a different party. Some examples might include News Anchors, Mercenaries, and Religious Cults.
Character Applications:
Ahhh, finally, the characters! You are free to apply to what ever you want. If you want to play as a different role, let me know and I will let you know what I'd like to see in your application! Also, be sure to note that many people will want to apply as a Death Note user. Thus, you may find yourself in competition for it. Also, if you don't get accepted as a Death Note user, do not fret. If you find him, you may be able to take it for yourself! Now children, go forth and make your characters.

Rules
Any violations to the following rules will result in a sanction of my choice. Also, be ready to change posts. The Death Note rules are extensive and thus, some may be broken unknowingly. Be Patient.
AutoHitting: Okay, I know this one gets fussy. I will allow SOME autohitting to avoid god-dodges. What I mean by this is if I am going to shoot you, I am going to shoot you. You're not going to find some half assed reason as to why youre going to dodge. Don't get yourself in a position to get auto-hit and you won't get auto-hit. It is simple as that. There is a decent chance your character WILL die. We have agents in this role play who will kill on sight. We have people with the ability to kill if they simply know your name and face. It's not hard. However, if I do someone auto-hitting shit they shouldn't be, I will step in.
GodModding: This role play will be a bitch to avoid GodModding. It is not on purpose, but people have a tendency to GodMod their character into situations that put their character to an advantage. The best way I can explain this is by giving an example. So, let's take Character A, John. John is hiding a gun under his bed. Character B, Jane, accidentally trips next to his bed, falling to the ground. When she does this, she sees the glint of metal under some dirty clothes. Suspicious, she removes the clothes and finds the gun. This is considered GodModding. It is hard to avoid in a game where you're trying to be a detective but you KNOW what your character doesn't cause you've read the other person's posts. Then again, how else will you ever figure anything out without some GodModding, right? Hell, if you've seen the show, I feel L godmodded a shit ton, haha. Anyways, I will be the judge of this. If you have a problem with another character, PM me.
Respect each other: Don't be a sore loser when someone out smarts you and kills your character. Instead, get revenge, haha! Also, respect each other in the OoC. Don't make me smack a hoe.
Death Note Rules:Make sure you keep track of the Death Note rules! If someone does something that they can't do and I don't catch it, try not to freak out. Just let me know or point out the specific rule.
English: Yes, we speak English. Please know it. I can overlook some simple mistakes but I don't want to see shitty text speak here. Especially not in the OoC.
Post Length: 3 paragraph minimal. Unless you are have an interaction with another character, 1 paragraph minimum.
I reserve the right to change these rules as I see fit.
Accepted Characters:
Death Note Users:
Username: Kiya
Character Name: Louise Sutherland
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Appearance:
Personality: Never considering her insatiable hunger for victory and competition as a bad thing Louise would always allow her more aggressive side to take over while competing, even in a local pub quiz. The side of aggression was far removed from what people usually see from her, some put it down to drink and her friends would often make fun of how angry she would get when trying to win an argument, which only helped to spur a more aggressive approach.
When not being egged on or in some kind of competition Louise was a thoughtful, kind and helpful girl.
-
Background (Include how you came across the Death Note): Is it losing, to lose the people most dear to you? She thought that the moment she found out her father was killed by an IED while patrolling in Afghanistan the two men stood at the door of her flat, holding his plaque of medals neatly displayed. He had died a hero's death they would tell her, but all she could think about was the futility, the man who came home year after year with a new column of medals dead, but not by the hand of some evil dictator by some scum bag coward. His victories had ended and she felt the bitter taste of failure that she couldn't quench. From this day on she vowed to make a name for herself, she would be remembered.
-
Two years after the horrific news Louise got a job as a TV weather girl, it was good pay for the little amount of time she had to put in but she couldn't help feeling like eye candy applied to the role to show off her skin and talk about something people looked up in their phones; this was certainly not “making a name” for herself and she knew it.
-
Life was at a stand still, she couldn't move anywhere more important at work due to how little attention she paid in the education system, besides her bosses talked down to her as if she was some dumb blonde so it was lucky enough she even had a job here, especially after her most recent disciplinary meeting called due to her slapping one of her bosses for telling her to get her “pretty little ass into a bikini and on screen to tell the viewers what a 'hot' day it was.”
She headed outside to get a breath of fresh air before she wells up inside. All these years she blamed her father for dying with making only scratches in history; yet she stands now with barely a thumb print to her name, if she died now no one would ever remember and this consumed her, tears of despair and self sadness burst from her eyes. But in the corner of her watering eyes she saw a black book shimmering and warping behind the droplets that held tight to her eyes her eyes. “Deathnote” She read and she couldn't help but feel her pathway to the top had been opened
Motivation (Include what you, as a writer/player, want to do with he Death Note): Consumed by the ideal of fame, Louise will use the book to become a face of the world and she won't stop at anything to have statues erected in her honour. It's hard to tell what tipped her over the edge and turned her from a happy-go-lucky girl to a honorary Shinigami killing people without thought or care, it could be whisperings from the death god that accompanied her, the death of her father whom accomplished in her eyes very little or the mere futility of her life so far.
She has a taste for the theatrical and would happily go public to tell the people of her existence, of course she understands the risks of showing her face if anyone else got the same power or if people want to catch her so she won't jeopardise herself that easily.
Personality: Ben is generally a quiet man, preferring to observe rather than participate. One could call him a wallflower. He is slow to anger, and usually takes his time solving problems, unless of course, something desperately needs to be solved right now. Then, he's usually quick. Regardless, he's efficient but one couldn't consider him ruthless.
Background (Include how you came across the Death Note): For most of his life, Ben has been average. Average grades, average in sports, average everything. He passed his classes in a nice medium, not genius level intellect, but neither was he an utter idiot. He earned a job at a general store as a cart pusher at 20 and has been working there ever since. He hasn't gone to college yet, as he doesn't have the money to and his parents died a while back. So, he's been making ends meet. Observing, working, and generally being his usual self. That all changed two days ago. Ben was stocking shelves, as he does when he's not pushing carts, when he noticed a notebook. This wouldn't have been unusual, as the store carried notebooks, but it wasn't anywhere near the notebooks section. And it was on the ground.
There was also the words, 'Death Note' on it's front. Knowing that the store didn't carry any of these notebooks as he had just got done stocking that area of the store, Ben picked up, and stuck it in his back pocket, deciding to investigate it later. When he got home, Ben opened it and immediately noticed the first rule. Of course, he didn't believe it, but curiosity and boredom got the better of him. He wrote in the name of a well known person in his neighborhood, whom was so old that people expected him to keel over any minute. As soon as he did it, Ben felt foolish and, silently berating himself for actually believing that, went to sleep. The next day, he saw the paramedics taking the corpse of the mans whose name he had written in was on it. He quickly closed his door, called in sick, locked himself in his house, and proceeded to panic. It had actually worked. He had killed someone. After about a half hour of panicking, sobbing, and debating with himself whether or not to turn himself in, he calmed down.
And immediately noticed Aki standing in his house staring at him.
So much for calm.
Shinigami:
Username: Shingaku
Shinigami Name: Akashi
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Sword is old, chipped, and worn. Mainly only used for decoration, or for intimidating. Often carried across back in sword sheath.
Personality:On the surface, can be viewed as sadistic, however, also easily angered. Sees strength as something that comes from within, Not something determined by the tool used, but more by your determination and drive. Akashi is easily aggravated, if he is insulted, however, will often egg his opponents on as well, attempting to make them fight back harder. Over the years of Observing Louise, Akashi discovered, he was much of a pervert, happily observing during her more private moments, up close in fine detail. Never touching, just Looking. Will often make Dirty jokes, and relishes in others anger and pain, laughing at them.
Background (Please discuss how you lost your death note with an accepted Death Note user.): Akashi often sparred with other Shinigami in the Shinigami Realm, before he bored of fighting such simple opponents, and sought a different challenge. He wasn't much for gambling, and there was almost nothing else to do in the Shinigami realm. As such, he began observing random humans, and found they sometimes had rather interesting Lives. Some were stronger, but dumber, others weaker but smarter, and the smarter would end up winning. This was Something Akashi didn't fully comprehend. He thought the weak always lost to those that were strong. As such, he began searching for one he viewed as weak. One day, he found a human, Being presented with a row of medals. The woman then began to weep. Over the next couple years, Akashi began haunting the woman, Learning of her name; Louise. He found her passion for victory rather amusing. Not to mention, By human standards, she was rather nice looking.
Once Akashi finished laughing at the man who tried to order her into a bikini, quickly followed by a loud crack, as his fat face rippled from the shock of her palm, Akashi Made his Decision. She was the One. The Weakling, Who would finally answer his question. Can a Weakling actually win? As such, he moved to the entrance, and dropped off the spare Notebook he had found lying in the Shinigami Realm, For her. "Take it, My fine lass. Take it, and prove Victorious." He spoke, As she noticed it, even though he knew she couldn't hear him.
Yet.

Shinigami Name: Aki Gender: Male Appearance: Personality: He is rather blunt. If you look fat in that dress, he'll say it flat out. He only tells you what you need to know. If he deems that you should know the whole truth he will tell you. If not, you shall receive a half-assed truth. He speaks in a quiet voice, and only says a few words. He feels that he shall only explain if he feels needed to be explained. If you can't tell he likes to be in control. Background (Please discuss how you lost your death note with an accepted Death Note user.): Aki led a boring life in the Shingami Realm. He gambled all day long. That's it. All he did. Gamble. Over and over, dealing out the cards. It was a boring life. But then he met a Shingami that Aki actually quite liked. Aroch.
They met over a game of cards, and became friends from a joke. Aroch and Aki soon became friends, and they would play jokes on humans. It's sick if you think about it: practical jokes by killing. But it's how they were natured. But soon, Aroch had fallen in love with a human girl. Her name was Mari. But one fatefuly day she nearly got shot in a mugging. Aroch wrote the robber's name in his notebook, and as you know it killed Aroch. Aki went into depression. He no longer had any will for cards. Aroch's death turned Aki into the sullen, simplistic shingami he is today.
Bored with cards, and because Aki had picked up Aroch's notebook, he decided to drop the notebook randomly to earth. It just so happened to land in a general store where Ben Mathews decided to pick it up.

Character Name: Kent Aion
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Appearance:
Personality: Known for his great problem solving skills, Kent is extremely intelligent. Coupled with the ability to think faster than about 90% of the population, Kent is considered a genius. Socially speaking, he is quite normal. He is very calculated in his way of interacting with others and he often finds ways to mock people without them even knowing.
Other: Kent is the Investigator or the group. He is also considered the leader as well as the brains.
Character Name: Rath Orson
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Weapons Specialist
Appearance:
Personality: Rath has the personality of an 18 year old kid. Rath is known for checking women out, making inappropriate jokes when ever he gets the chance, and using profanity unnecessarily. Despite his stern appearance, he smiles often. However, when the time comes, he becomes very serious. He believes most problems can be solved with force or violence. However, he knows his place and knows to follow orders. He is a killer deep down inside, no matter how many jokes he makes.
Other: Rath is the second in command. He is the brawn of the group.
Character Name: Mia Bastian
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Computer Hacker/Wiz
Appearance:
Obviously her hair won't be blue... we'll go with light brown.[/img]
Personality: Mia is a spunky girl who is very religious. Being a shut in most of her life, her humor is a little odd. She almost never understands pop-culture references.
Other: Mia is the computer genius as well as the hacker of the group.
Character Name: Leila Hannah
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Spy
Appearance:
Personality: Leila is an amazing actress. She can have almost any personality she desires. She can be an outgoing, normal teenager if she desires or she can be a timid book worm. She has a way with words that can make them sound like liquid gold. Yet, the same words can be poisonous to the ear. With Leila, seduction is never off the table. Outside of her work, she is cold and aloof. She doesn't say much unless she absolutely needs to. Killing since the age of 7 can do that to anyone.
Other: Leila is the group's spy. Collecting intel as well as infiltrating is her specialty.
Bio: Kent, Rath, Mia, and Leila form a group of mercenaries that are employed by a very powerful stock broker. Playing the game of stocks is a very risky business. It's risky unless you can take out your competition. We're not talking about killing. At least not all the time. There are many other ways to get ahead in the stock market. Sometimes all that is needed is a little information, which might require a bit of computer hacking. Other times documents need to be stolen or a person needs to be seduced. And then there are times when someone needs to be 'physically persuaded'. Yet, despite all these tactics, there are times when killing is the only or easiest answer. If their employer wants something, he gets it.
To avoid complications if the police were ever to find out about their operations, which is highly unlikely, the group of mercenaries know their employer only by Dr. Strange. This Dr. Strange has generously proved the group with their very own skyscraper in the lower side of Manhattan to work out of. They even have their own apartments the size of an entire floor in the same building. This building is also filled with all sorts of resources the group might need. The first few levels of the building appears to be an average business building with armed security on the ground level.

If you want to invite me to your RP because you've seen me around and think I'd like it, send the word 'Chestnut' in the PM subject heading. If you want to invite me to your RP because you've seen that I'm a member of the forum and you want to bring a lot of people's attention to your RP in the hope that some of them will be interested through the law of statistics, piss off. I reserve the right to bluntly tell you to piss off if you spam my inbox with a random RP invitation to a concept, fandom or genre in which I do not express interest. This is spam, and will be treated as such.
Alternatively, check my Roleplayer Profile for what I'm into, and send me an invitation based upon it. Still please include the word 'Chestnut'.
Sorry to be a dragon, but I just really hate spammy invitations.

Character Name: Axel Cunningham
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Appearance:
Personality: Axel is in high school where he gets teased a lot by a group of bullies. This is mostly because they think he is weird. Most of the time Axel is drawing in class and doesn't pay attention to what is happening in class, and still he gets good grades. He had one best friend but he moved away so he became a bit of a loner, since no one else was interested in him. He is very creative, and nice to the ones who accept him as a friend.
Background: When Axel was born he only had his mother. His mother had a relationship with a man, Axel's father, but he turned out to be a criminal so his mother, who is a detective, had to lock him away. At his current age he knows his father is out of prison, but he probably never took the effort to meet his son. His mother is one of the many detectives at some organization, though she is of high rank.
Because of her job she is often away, leaving Axel alone in the house. Axel became very independent. He always makes his own dinner, he cleans up in the house when it is a mess (although he prevents it from being a mess, so he doesn't clean up much) and does other things around the house. Another minus is that he has no one to talk to, sometimes he has an evening alone with his mother because she is free, but that is all the time he spends with her. He has lots of free time so when at home he mostly plays video games, draws and makes his homework. During school he also always is seen drawing and not paying attention. The teacher don't mind it because he gets good grades, but the other students find him weird. He is often bullied because of that. During his first three years at school he had a best friend with whom he spend most time with. They shared the same interests and his friend would often protect him if he was bullied. But because his father got another job he had to move, leaving Axel alone. The current year where he is in, he doesn't have any friends.
One day when he came back from the grocery store to buy ingredients for dinner, it started to rain so he quickly ran home until he saw a spot where it wasn't raining. There was a notebook, so he picked it up, suddenly it started raining there too. He looked on the notebook and saw the words 'Death Note.' He looked up and saw a creature sitting on a roof, he rubbed his eyes to look closer, but it was gone. He had no idea what the notebook was but decided to take it home. Having nothing to do, he opened the notebook only to see it was completely empty, except for a long list of rules on the front. He began to read those and discovered what power this notebook had, and what he could possibly do with that.
Motivation: Since Axel always was picked on he decided to get rid of everyone who ever hurt him, and on a cruel way too instead of a simple heart attack. However the power of the notebook would make him invincible and might cause him to drive insane of power. But because he always is very calm and thinks before he does something he claims that he won't become consumed by the power of the Death Note.
