Chapter Two: Fool's Gold
"Oh man, I bet the look on his face when he saw his missing jewel, priceless." A pair of young men send the back of a Mercedes one of them the one who had been talking was laughing up a storm. There were three others in the car two male one female. The driver was a large man, his seat with push nearly all the way back to give room for his large frame, most of which was muscle. There were muscles upon muscles but they were toned to a degree to prevent the hulking like bulges that is girlfriend did not find appealing. He wore a white dress shirt with a black vest over it, a remnant of the night before.
Next to him was the ginger woman in her mid twenties. She was in the process of removing old makeup and replacing it with something less formal. Her frame in the tight dress was like an hour glass, curved but not too much to throw off the balance of her features. She put the passenger mirror down in order to block the Rising Sun.
"Jackal why don't you quiet it down the back there." She said pressing her lips together applying a dark brown makeup, contrary to her tomato red hair.
"Let him have his laugh Sabrina. We did well tonight." The voice came from the last member of the group. He had smooth black hair, evenly cut around so that his bangs with past his eyes and his ears were covered. It was quiet for a moment. Jackal's laugh died down and no one spoke. The night before have been something in the group had discussed for days. Now that is finally over and they had been triumphant, there is little to say.
"Where we going boss? We've been driving for a while now. I think it's safe to talk now." The driver spoke, his voice deep yet respectful.
"Hopefully somewhere I can get out of this dress." Sabrina said running her hands down her waist smoothing down the dress.
"Don't worry, will be stopping soon." was all he said.
"There's nothing but desert here." Jackal added. Next to him the young man smiled; His red eyes shone through is Raven black hair,
"Perfect place to lose a diamond."
--------------
Outside a gas station, surrounded by desert set the Mercedes. It was empty, it's passengers now inside the station. The three men stood amongst the isles. The driver, Bruce, flipped bags of chips over reading the ingredients. The youngest of the group, the one with the red eyes, stood by the counter conversating with the old man behind the register.
"How often do you get business here?" He asked. They had drove for hours without seeing any life other than the occasional cactus. The man smiled under is NASCAR cap, "Oh, enough to keep the lights on. Cars don't often pass by here but when I do they stop here."
"I bet they do."
There was the sound of a soda bouncing across the floor. Its liquid cargo spraying out the top. The young man turned to see Jackal frantically trying to grab the soda. Jackal looked at him with wide eyes,
"Sorry boss." The raven haired boy shook his head and turn to the elderly man, "We'll pay for that." The old man not in his head, "I'll go get paper towels." As the old man went to the back to grab paper towels Sabrina stepped out of the bathroom,
"Is the guy here yet?" Her red hair was gone, for it had only been a wig. In place of long curly hair was short straight hair; it was dark brown and smooth. The old man came out from the back and walked to Jackal, handing him the paper towels.
"Thank you." Jackal said. The old man returned to his spot behind the counter.
"So, where are you guys heading to?"
"Just meeting a friend." At that moment the door chimes rang. Through the doors stepped in a man in a trench coat and a fedora hat.
"That's our man." Sabrina's voice could be heard from the back. The man approached the raven haired boy, "Are you Lucius?" The boy smiled,
"Depends, who are you?" "They told me you would be careful." The others are starting to approach now so young man held out his hand,
"It's fine. Let's take this outside."
The group stepped outside, quiet, waiting for the man to speak. "I think you know who sent me here."
"No I don't." The man's face was hidden by a handkerchief and a large pair of sunglasses,
"You could be one of two men, which are you?" The man's hands never left pockets, "Who travels under the bridge yet never breaths?" Jackal stepped forward, "Who is this guy?" The young man held out his hand,
"A dead man floating downstream." The air grew still, it was silent. Just the group is beginning to tense, the two men broke out in laughter. "So it is you Lucius. He told me you were clever. Must have been to still the diamond." Lucius snickered,
"Indeed I am."
------
Half an hour later the group was back on the road,
"So, what now?" Sabrina was asking the question. Lucius answered,
"We have enough money to get started now. We'll get the rest over the next few months." "And what is it exactly we're getting started on?" Lucius tossed a small bag of diamonds in his hand, they were worth a total of 500,000,000 dollars. Not only have a stolen the Queen jewel, but they had replaced millions of dollars worth of diamonds with counterfeits.
"That's up to you. We can head our separate ways when we reach our destination." Sabrina, who had had her eyes set on Lucius, now turned in her seat,
"Sounds good to me." Jackal continued to look at Lucius,
"Or?"
"Or, you can stay with me." Bruce who had stayed quiet the entire trip now spoke,
"Saying is you have a diamonds; I think I'll stay with you." "Damn it!" Sabrina cursed aloud seeing the fault in her plan.
"Fine then. But I'm only staying to make sure I get the rest of my money." Lucius tucked to diamonds away in his coat pocket,
"Bruce we heard what you had to say. Sabrina you too. How about you Jackle?" The man stuttered, fidgeting with his fingers,
"Well uh, I guess I'm staying with you." "Good. I guess it's a plan then."
