The Song of Aelik - Verse One [Zhaliora and Phenox] IC

    Aelik - Evening

Lamps hung from posts on the side of the streets, illuminating the darkness. The wonderful scent of pies, breads, and stews filled the six districts of the city. The streets were full of people drinking, laughing, and dancing as if it were the middle of the day. Music and good times could be found everywhere. Everyone was celebrating The Festival of the Dead, partying in the hopes that those who have passed on will join them in this night where the world of the living and the world of the dead overlapped. As midnight approached, a shadowy group of Dark Elves all clad in black cloaks made their way to the royal district. The assumed leader of the group looked up at the huge palace. He looked to a man on his right.

"This is the place." He said in a thick Dark Elven accent. (Think Arabic) As the music faded into the background, the group of six would take up positions around the palace. The guard was loose this evening. The king, famous for his kindness, gave all night shift guards the night off to enjoy the last day of the festival. One guard, however, was still on duty; Praetorian Guard Captain Tengwa. The Dark Elves outside had no idea that the strongest of the Praetorian Guard was inside the building between them and their target. The leader of the group took a small stone rod out of his pocket. All hell was about to break loose. "Go and stir up the crowd. Assure we will make a clean escape." The five subordinates nodded, vanishing in a puff of black smoke. "O, Denivante, lord of death and decay; the end of creation. Grant me the power I need to destroy all who would stand in the way of thine work. I beseech thee, come to me in my time of need."

The elf stepped into a small cavity in the wall where the stone had worn away. He then put the stone card to his forehead, closed his eyes, and whispered; "Come forth." Shadows around the district broke away from their places of origin and seemed to be forming around the Dark Elf's body. The shadows that formed around him moved to the center of the road leading to the palace. They began to shape themselves into a humanoid knight about fifteen feet tall. The knight was clad in cracked gray armor with purple trim. The helmet the knight wore was topped with cracked horns. All that could be seen in the helmet were two yellow eyes and sharp teeth.

The knight had an evil smile that would make the bravest warrior shrink away in fear. The knight reared back and let out a mighty roar with such force, it broke down the huge palace doors. Everyone in the city would likely hear it. At that time, the five Dark Elves spread around to the five other districts. Without a word, they began to murder as many people as possible. After a few seconds, people began screaming and fleeing. This scene of joy and celebration turned to one of grief and panic in an instant.

    [Tengwa]
Tengwa stood at the king's side, staring straight ahead.

"You should go and enjoy the festival, Tengwa. I'll be fine, really." The king gave her a reassuring smile.

"I'm never off duty, sir. I couldn't forgive myself if I let anything happen to you." The king gave up on getting Tengwa to go to the festival and leaned back in his throne and looked ahead at the palace doors, which burst open shortly after a roar shook the building to its very foundations. The two enormous metal doors flew across the room. Tengwa reacted quickly, grabbing the king and tackling him to the ground. When she looked up, she caught a glimpse of the Knight among the dust. Quickly, the Knight vanished. A couple of seconds later, the elf in the robes entered. "Good evening, your majesty." He froze when he saw Tengwa. "You? Didn't I take care of you last year?" He shook his head, opening his robe and letting it drop. He had a full body set of pure white armor. Spikes were mounted on the Shoulders and he wore a helmet with a terrible looking demon face that covered his own. He unsheathed two white blades and put the ends of the two handles together, forming a swallow. "So, I guess you get a rematch. Make it count."

Festivals. Festivals were her favourite events of the year. Festivals made people relax. It made people forget about the pickpockets that were lurking in the shadows. Lidol was one of those pickpockets, and she had just found her mark. It was a noble high elf, dressed in the finest clothes you could buy on the market. He had jewellery hanging everywhere from his tall but slender frame. She approached him from the shadows as he stood by a stall, looking at its products. She reached into one of her breast pockets hidden in her leather clothing and withdrew a tiny throwing dagger with her index finger and hid it in her palm.

Lidol sighed. This noble was not cautious at all, it would be no challenge to `liberate´ him of his money. It was, almost boring. He also had no guards, no one to look after his pretty, noble self. She crept closer with the tide of people so that no one would get suspicious of her. She did not have her mask on, nor did she have her hood up, she would be very suspicious if she had. She was finally within range of the noble and very quietly and quickly cut the strap holding his purse in place and reached out with her other hand and grabbed the bag as it fell before moving back into the crowd.

She had made it more interesting for herself though, she had cut the purse so that the man would take notice of the action. He quickly turned and looked around before reaching down to notice that his purse was gone. He looked around once more before he started screaming; "THIEF!" However, he did not know whom it was that had stolen his purse. Lidol smirked as a nearby guard approached the man and started questioning him before the guard started running in the wrong direction after her. She tossed the purse up into the air a few times before pocketing it and headed towards a nearby tobacco shop.

As she opened the door and strode in like she owned the place she called out to the old man behind the counter. "OOOhhhhiiiii, old man, long time no see. Has my tobacco arrived yet?" The old man had a grumpy look on his face before she shook his head and sighed. "So you're here again Lidol? Were you not in here just last week buying another batch of tobacco?" Lidol walked up to the counter an sat down on top of it before leaning in and kissed his cheek. "You know I like to smoke that stuff, and I know you do too" she traced her finger across his cheek while she spoke. The old man brushed away her hand, used to her attempts of getting the tobacco cheaper from him. "You can't tempt me into giving you a discount, no matter how much you try Lidol. I have a wife, and I love her a lot. Besides, she would kill me if I did give in." "I head that!" a shout came from one of the back rooms as an elderly woman walked into the store. "Hi, how are you today Lidol?" she asked in with a gentle voice before giving her the tobacco. "Oh, I am just fine" she answered and hopped down from the counter and put the purse on the desk. "Here, take it all. You don't need to bother with counting the money if you put in an extra shipment of tobacco when I order the next time" she said and smiled at the old couple.

She man opened the purse and took a look inside and saw just how much money were inside. He raised an eyebrow at her before speaking up. "If you are so rich that you can spend all this money like its nothing. Why do you never wear more decent clothes?" Lidol shrugged at his question with a smile on her lips before she thanked the couple and left the shop to begin her real mission of the night. She walked back to her room in a tavern in the city and picked up her equipment and mask. She had planned this for months, waited for this day to strike. She had two objectives. One; Steal a special jewel from a certain princess in the castle. Secondly, even though Lidol had thought the request very strange, steal some of her used underwear and leave behind a pair of the clients. She did not mind of course, it would be very entertaining to steal them and leave behind her `signature´ and the underwear.

She donned her mask and raised her hood before leaving the room by the window, jumping onto a nearby rooftop before jumping down into an alley. She began to make her way towards the castle, sticking to the darkness. It did not take long until she was near the castle and took out her bow and her special grappling hook arrow and fired it into a window before she started to climb inside. This was the easy part. The hard part was to find what she were looking for. She made her way up to the princess room and looked through the keyhole to see if someone was inside. She smiled to herself as there was none inside and she opened the door. She already knew where the jewel would be. She had, `enticed´, a maid to tell her while she were drunk after Lidol had become a friend of hers a few months back. She made her way over to the small chest on her vanity and took out her lockpicking equipment and got to work on the lock.

It took her some time, but she got it open and took the stone inside, a beautiful red ruby. She quickly pocketed it and began her search for the princess underwear. It took her some time, but she found the princess private bathroom and her wash bin. Lidol reached down and grasped the underwear and looked at it. It was plain pair to be honest, compared to Lidol's own. She put the underwear inside of her own clothing before she removed the man's pants from from a pocket and placed them on top of the other underwear.

Suddenly, she heard an extremely loud crash from somewhere inside the castle and she heard screaming and utter panic from outside. She looked out and saw a group of people killing indiscriminately and the people fled from their onslaught. "What the-?" she said aloud and got a really bad feeling. She made her way towards the sound against her better judgement and entered the throne room from inside the castle and saw the king on the ground, a shiny dark elf and the princess squaring off in the room. She was unable to hold back and crept into the room and hid behind some furniture to watch what was unfolding inside the room.

Tengwa raised her shield and drew Brethilmor. "I'm going to enjoy this way more than I should." Tengwa knew of Kilo's speed. She knew that her best option would be to wait for him to come to her. She was far too slow to charge him.

Kilo laughed a long and evil laugh. "My, my. Nice to see you cast aside that shy, meek attitude. I hope you provide a challenge this time." He rushed Tengwa at break-neck speed and delivered a kick to her chest before she even had a chance to bring her shield up. It knocked the wind out of her, sending her flying into the back wall, out cold. "Oh, well that's a shame. Isn't that right your Majesty?" Kilo closed the distance between himself and the king quickly, picking him up by the collar of his silk shirt. "A little birdie told me that you have a knight's control rod. It would be better for all of us if you gave it to me." The king shook his head.

"Never. The order will never have the knights. Not while I breathe." At the end of the king's sentence, Kilo chuckled.

"Poor choice of words, friend." Kilo paused, then turned his head to the unconscious Tengwa propped up against the wall. "Maybe you'll do it in exchange for her life. Let's find out." He let the king go and walked over to Tengwa, putting one of his blades to her throat. "Now, let's try this one more time. I'm in a very big hurry and I just might end her life now to get it over with. Give me the rod or your precious daughter dies." The king didn't know what to do. "I'm waiting, old man."

"It's in the treasure vault. Behind my throne." The king stared at the ground. Kilo grabbed the king and jerked him behind the throne. The king pushed on the wall and sure enough, it gave and revealed a dark passageway.

"Looks like you weren't lying. Let's go." Kilo dragged the king into the passageway, leaving Tengwa alone in the room with the dark elf hiding behind the furniture.

Lidol watched with fascination as the fight began. However, the fight was over before it even began and the warrior princess lay on the ground, knocked out. She crept a little closer to listen in on what they were saying and overheard something about a control rod for one of the ancient knights. Even despite growing up at a street rat, Lidol had heard the stories of the knights. The ancient machines of war that had almost exterminated her people from the face of this world. And this king had the control rod for one of them. Lidol almost shook in excitement. Stealing that rod from under their noses would be the ultimate heist of her entire career. Sure, she would never use it, nor would she sell it. She would hang it on her wall as a trophy for her entire life.

The king refused to give in though, but when the dark elf threatened his daughter, he caved in quite quickly. Lidol thought he was weak. If he really had one of those rods, and if it got into the hands of this elf, untold destruction would follow. But, she also felt with him, she would probably do the same thing if she were in his place. Once the door opened and they started to walk into it, Lidol ran quietly up to the princess and felt for a pulse. She was still alive. Lidol did not like death, despite having to take a few lives in her career, she had never enjoyed it. She looked at the pretty face for a few moments and kissed her cheek before running off after the king and the attacker.

She walked after them, silently but quickly, not wanting to loose them in the darkness. They finally arrived at the treasure vault. It was a large room filled with different treasures of all kinds and sizes. Lidol stuck to the shadows as the pair walked up to a pedestal, and on top if it were a rod of some kind. The dark elf grasped the rod while still holding onto the king. He stood there for a few moments before he turned towards the passage he came from. That is when Lidol struck. She struck out for his face with one arm and went for a leg sweep with the other while grasping the rod and cast her darkness magic, trying to take the rod away from the man.

Kilo and the king finally entered the treasure room. There were only a few torches in the large chamber, but the light reflecting off of all the gold and jewels in the room illuminated the large area. Kilo sauntered past all the gold, the jewels, the legendary weapons, all the way up to a large pedestal. Kilo obviously wasn't in this for the riches. He was in it for one thing; the five foot, ornate, gold rod studded with jewels. The shaft climbed up to a glass-like orb that held a flickering orange light. Kilo reached up and grabbed the shaft of the rod and prepared to leave. That was when he noticed Lidol attempting to attack him as he left. He dodged the blow and put his hand up as she cast her spell. Despite the onslaught of attacks, Kilo was completely unharmed. "How dare you strike out at me!" Kilo let go of the king and lashed out at Lidol with his armored claws, catching her on the side of her head, causing her to lose conscious and sending her falling into a pile of gold. Kilo turned his attention back to the rod, lifting it off of the pedestal. "Fantastic..." He turned to the king. "Thank you for your cooperation." As soon as he finished his sentence, he leaned down and put his hand through the king's chest. The king grunted at the impact, looking down at Kilo's hand in his chest, then up to Kilo himself. Blood trickled out from the corner of his mouth, staining part of his short beard red. Kilo removed his hand from the king's chest, then spat on him. "Rest in pieces, false king." Kilo then left the treasure room, hopefully for good. Tengwa stumbled into the room an hour or so later, letting out a pained cry when she saw her father on the floor dead. She leaned over his body, sobbing. This would likely wake Lidol up.

*Lidol will awaken with full HP

Tengwa then rushed to the pedestal. "NO! He took it!" Just then, the Praetorian Guard entered the room, having finally gotten out of the situation in the city.

"Captain, we're--" The Lieutenant stopped and saw the king's body. "Gods help us, we're too late..." Tengwa turned to the soldiers.

"All of you, find the the ones who did this and bring back the rod!" She looked down at Lidol. "I'll question her myself."

Lidol quickly realized her mistake as the elf blocked her first attack before stopping her leg. She could see the fist coming for her face in ultra-rapid and she realized that she was done for and closed her eyes. She felt her cheek taking the hit, and then it turned black, she was unconscious even before hitting the ground. She lay on the ground, not noticing anything that happened around her. She was awakened by a piercing and pained cry. She opened her eyes and felt sick and turned over to her side and threw up onto the pile she lay next to. She could hear a woman shout and a lot of people enter the room and they began to talk to each other.

Lidol slowly got up onto her knees unsteadily before falling onto her side again. She grunted and shook her eyes and slowly got up again, and this time she was able to stay upright. Lidol slowly started to crawl away when she head a voice above her; "I'll question her myself." "SHIT!" Lidol tried to get up onto her legs to run but she fell onto her face and gave up. She had no chance to get away in this condition. She crawled up to one of the walls and placed her back against it before she took out her pipe from one of her pockets and lit it. She inhaled the smoke deeply and exhaled it in Tengwa's direction. "Sooooo sweetheart. What do you want to know?" Lidol knew that if the princess screwed up, she could try to cut her throat and run away. She knew she had no chance in a normal battle, the warrior princess is way stronger then what she is. However, she might be able to do something sneaky if she got too close

Lidol looked at Tengwa's cheek where she had kissed her, there were still some lipstick there. "Sorry for the lipstick" she said and pointed towards the mark. "Your sleeping face was too pretty to resist" she continued and chuckled as the herbal tobacco calmed her down. It was no drug, but the herbs and the tobacco had a very calming effect on the mind. It was really great for these situations, it helped her to think, to stay calm when the prospect of imminent death was looming over her. But it also made her playful personality run rampant.

Tengwa watched the Praetorians grab the king's body, then set out to follow her orders. She turned to Lidol and was about to speak when her prisoner brought the lipstick on her cheek to her attention. "Sorry for the--" She touched her cheek, then looked at the lipstick on her fingers. Her face instantly turned a deep red. She wasn't angry. She did like girls, but someone kissing her while she was unconscious just made her uneasy. She could have cut her throat if she had a mind to. Tengwa glared at Lidol. She would then ask her a series of question.

    "Your name."
    "How old are you?"
    "Why did you come here?"
    "Were you working with Kilo?"
"What do you know about the rod he took out of here?"

Regardless of what Lidol would say, Tengwa would just stick to the questions. Once she finished her interrogation, she would turn around and look at the exit. "You may leave if you wish. I'm going to find Kilo and kill him myself." Tengwa reached up and traced her finger along the length of a long scar on her throat. She didn't remember getting it, but it must have been from her battle with Kilo. "You are free to go." Tengwa mumbled, deep in thought, wondering where Kilo would go next.

Lidol chuckled warmly as Tengwa blushed deeply and formed a heart with the smoke before she blew a kiss her way. Lidol wanted to tease the pretty princess but she stopped herself before she got into bigger trouble than she was already in. "I am Lidol,`gentlewoman thief´. If you ever want to hire me to steal something for you instead of from you, come find me" she said and winked and inhaled the smoke again before blowing it again in Tengwa's direction. "I am younger then you, but old enough to do what I want to do. But.....if you really want to know, I am twenty four." She took another puff before continuing. "I came here to do a job and to continue with your next question, no, I was not working with him, nor did I know his name until just now. Also, the only thing I knew about that rod is that it can control one of the ancient knights" she chuckled before continuing. "Once I heard that there was one here, I checked up on you, kissed your sleepy face before trying to get my hands on it and save it as a trophy."

Lidol had no reason to lie, but she hid a few details, she was probably going to die soon anyway. However, the pipe fell out of her mouth in pure surprise when Tengwa told her that she was free to go and she coughed on the smoke. She picked up the pipe again. "You aren't afraid that I'll take every treasure here? Or that I would stab you in the back?" Lidol were perplexed, she did honestly don't know what to do. "You know, I don't like when my goal makes its escape. I want that rod, and I am going to get it, one way or another" Lidol said in a dead serious tone. "Unless I get something better to target, I'll hunt that rod. Unless you hire me of course. Then I am bound to help you until my contract ends, but then the chase is back on." Lidol smirked and got up, this time without any problems and started to slowly make her way towards the exit. She walked slowly, just in case Tengwa should take her up on the offer.

Tengwa sighed when Lidol brought up the possibility of stabbing her in the back. "Would it be a stretch to say that was what I was hoping for?" She shook her head and watched Lidol leave. It was true, she needed all the help she could get. Kilo was a formidable foe and no doubt, he's hiding that rod behind an army. The kingdom will be in an extreme state of panic. Her brother, Belial, was king now and it was up to him to set the people at ease. He didn't have any time to help Tengwa on her quest.

And the Praetorians can't help her. Their job is to defend the monarch. Common guards aren't well trained enough... this was her only option. "I will pay you 400,000 Athans once you have fulfilled your end of the bargain. Help me obtain this rod and the money is yours. But you will not, NOT, get the rod." Tengwa thought this was a fair deal. But the way this Dark Elf was acting towards her made her feel... odd.

She could tell that Lidol was flirting, but couldn't tell if she was serious. "The journey will be long and perilous, but it won't be anything you can't handle." She tossed a coin purse her way. "10,000 in there. You will get the rest upon completion of the job. You may use my bedroom, I shan't be needing it. Sleep well, we head out tomorrow morning." With that, Tengwa walked off into the castle, heading to prepare her father's funeral.

Lidol stopped when she heard the amount of money she was being offered. She had expected something like it, but not that much. She was close to dropping the pipe from her mouth once again before she quickly spun around. "Sure, I'll help you to get the rod, but, I still want the rod you know. Once our contract is over, I'll come for it" Lidol said and winked. She took another puff from her pipe as the tobacco was doing its work on her. She caught the purse that was thrown her way and quickly pocketed it under her cloak. "I am used to long and perilous jobs. How long did you think it took me to plan my break-in here?" she said and grinned before she took out something from a pocket. "I thank you for the offer, but I have to fulfil this job before I can join in on yours" she said and spun around Tengwa's bra that she had stolen earlier before she took off at full speed down the hallway so that Tengwa could not catch her. She pocketed the bra once again and quickly blended into the shadows once she were outside.

Lidol left the castle, high in spirit. Directly after she had finished one job, she gained another. And she did not die! Now how about that!? She made her way towards the arranged meeting site to deliver the goods she had stolen. She climbed up onto a roof and surveyed the site to see if she had been double crossed. There were no one part from her contact in the immediate area though. In her line of work, you could never be too careful. She dropped down behind the man, startling the nobleman quite a bit. She removed the underwear from her person before she took out the red ruby and presented it to the man. "Here are the goods, what about the money?" "Here, 100,000 Athans as promised" he said and threw two large purses her way. Lidol took a look inside them and rummaged around before taking one of the coins in her hand and bit it. She then did the same with the other bag before she left the stolen goods on a nearby barrel and took off in the opposite direction. "Glad to do business with you! If you ever require something else, feel free to find me again" she shouted over her shoulder before disappearing around a corner.

The banks would be closed until after she predicted that she and Tengwa would leave the city so she went around to her hideouts and dropped off the normal amount before returning to her home and stashed the rest there. She stretched her back before she warmed up the bath and took off her cloak. She took a good look into the mirror to see if she had gotten a mark from where she had been punched. It was still a little red, but it did not seem like it was any scars there. As more and more of her clothes fell to the ground, more and more scars appeared on her dark skin. Most of them were tiny and hardly noticeable but there were two scars that stood out. Two scars across her back, a good foot each that formed an X. A present from her father before she was thrown out into the streets.

She sunk into the bath and exhaled with exhaustion. This day had been trying for her. She slowly washed her entire body in the warm water with a sponge and soap before untying her long hair and applied some shampoo to it. She soaked in the bath for a long while until it were lukewarm before she got out of the bath and dried up. She looked at her bed before she decided that she would take up the princess on her offer. She wanted to try out a royal bed just once, just for the heck of it. She dressed up quickly and brought all the equipment and funds that she thought she might need on the trip part from food and left for the castle.

She did not know if the princess had told the guards so she went by the same approach as last time she were here and entered through one of the windows before making her way towards the princess room. Once there she stripped down once again, scouted out some perfume and applied it before untying her hair and lied down in the bed and pulled the covers over her nude self. "I need to get one of these......." she mumbled before falling asleep quite quickly.
