Mom and/or dad have no idea what you were going to do this Friday night. And if you told them, they'd probably pump you full of anti-psychotic medication, take you to see a few special doctors, and genuinely make sure you live your life under the lens of the mental health system from cradle to grave.

So you tell them the truth- a measure of truth.

You're going to this comic book/nerd store to play a role-playing game. Witches and Wizards, you call it. Roll some dice, cast spells on paper, order pizza. Have good old teenage fun. Your parental unit rolls their eyes and wonders what happened to old teenage pastimes like baseball and dancing. But, they reflect silently, you aren't shooting heroin or getting knocked up. So they can be a little grateful for that.

You don't tell them how you found this place.

You don't tell them how there was this kid in your school's library the other day. None of your friends knew him. Nobody had seen him in the halls or around the neighborhood before. But he was sitting in that one alcove in the library where they keep the outdated geography textbooks, and you saw the line of kids waiting to see him. They were asking him for things- weird things- while his face was stuck in a magazine and he made noncommittal noises at their requests. A few he answered with a flat out "No." From what was being asked of him you figured he was some magician who could do party tricks, but the dumb cheerleaders thought he was truly a wizard. The big wooden walking stick crooked in his shoulder complemented the idea, but love potions didn't exist, magic spells were for kids books, and exorcisms are only in the movies.

You ignored him.

He didn't ignore you.

You never saw him leave, too engrossed in your chemistry homework to pay him any mind. But when you got home and opened your backpack to do homework, you found something.

A pencil drawing of the kid. A drawing that moved. The pencil-drawn figure stood from a sitting position. Waved. Smiled in a friendly manner. Then the dark graphite streaks began to unwind and sort into words before your eyes.

An address, which you googled and found to be a comic book store downtown. A date and time- Friday at six in the evening. And a name.

'Ryan Black, wizard extraordinaire.'

Immediately after printing a map, the magical drawing bursts into purple flame in your hands. But the fire doesn't burn. It doesn't even warm. Even as the parchment disintegrates into cool ashes, your hands are immersed in the tongues of fire and you wonder if someone slipped something into your bottled water a minute ago.

Briefly you wonder if this is something you really want to get involved in. It smacks of doors that might be better left shut and barred.

You take another look at the map you printed and the pile of ash on your desk.

Yeah right! Like you'd really pass up the opportunity to meet this guy in person!

Ryan Black is a wizard- this much is true. And he's chosen your character to help him form his own Cabal; a circle of magic users who protect and defend one another, your section of the city, and when necessary, the human world. The reason why he chose you will be made clear later (for your own reasons, or I can provide one as Ryan).

The "Entrance exam" for this particular RP will be an initial post describing your character leaving home/arriving at the comic store.

The High Roller is a two level building in the downtown area of the city, not far from the train/subway stop. It's situated between a hair salon on the left and a vacant storefront on the right. The upper floor appears to be an apartment of some kind.

Could you possibly elaborate a little bit more on what kind of magic our characters will be learning?

I'm willing to open that up to the floor for consideration. I had an idea in mind of characters expressing their magic through their backgrounds. An artist draws charms, an auto shop student enchants items. A writer writes spells. Ultimately how you perform the magic will be open to you, but there wi be no godlike powers granted right out, of course.

Major Arcana I think will be based around te Whit Wolf system. Life, Death, luck/fate, time, matter, forces (elements) and a few others.

As I said, I'll happily work with you on it.

This isn't quite complete, but almost. Just the magic portion I want to iron out.

Name: Oscar Triscott

Age: 16

Physical Description: Oscar is a fellow of average height and skinning disposition. He wears rectangular spectacles with deep, forest green eyes. On his head often rests a beanie, his favorite to wear is his white one with a red pattern. His dark brown hair is actually rather long; it easily reaches his shoulders, and occasionally he has to tie it back in a ponytail despite the opinions and teasing of others. The Palm of Oscar's hands all the way down to his fore-arm are covered in bandages to hide a series of small scars that were given to him only a year before. Oscar's wardrobe is pretty normal for the most part. He often wears a combination of Jeans, T-shirts and vests. Oscar enjoys outside and fresh air, so his skin is well tanned overall.

School: Aren't we all attending the same school? I'm not sure on a school name otherwise.

Clique (if applicable): He isn't really in part of a clique. He is a bit of a drifter, but he does try to be nice to everyone he meets (and ignores those who don't seem to like him.)

Bio: Oscar is Labeled as a hippy by much of his school, but he prefers the term 'environmentalist'. He recycles. He uses nature friendly detergents. He even worked with his parents to have solar panels installed. Oscar is dedicated to his nature friendly ways and takes deliberate steps to improve. He doesn't quite cross the line of vegetarian however. Oscar will choose to eat soy instead of meat for the most part, but he'll allow himself to eat meat if it is being served to him by someone else. He is a very calm and agreeable person who tries his best to be flexible, both for the sake of his friends/partners and for the environment. Oscar is good at reading people's emotions and judging somebody's intentions based off of their body language. He is dedicated to the way he chooses to live, but he understands of others don't want to choose soy foods over meat and to install expensive solar panels to their home.

Oscar's parents are, for the most part, normal. They are supportive of their son's choice to be eco-friendly but they are often times not quite as enthusiastic about the idea themselves. Oscar will often taken it upon his hand to cook dinners for the family. He is quite skilled at preparing and cooking food, and what he makes is usually both good and good for you. But he doesn't cook meat, which is something that Oscar's parents, especially his father, miss eating. Sometimes after dinner they'll tell Oscar they are going out for errands, but secretly they'll be going out for fast food. His mother and father cannot believe that someone could subject himself to all of the things he does just for the sake of himself, but they are supportive of their son and are happy that he is passionate about something. Oscar is an individual who cares for others very deeply, but will stand for his beliefs with a passion and not allow other people's thoughts or opinions to negatively affect him. He can be quite stubborn at times and is very set in his own ways.

Magic Type Desired (Charms, spells, enchantments, etc.): I was thinking use of potions, perhaps some of them could have an effect when thrown and some could have an effect when consumed. I'm not sure yet, but what do you think of it?

Why does your character really want to learn magic: Oscar wants to be able help others and to distinguish himself from others. It's his only motive, but it's a powerful one that makes him eager to learn and absorb information about magic.
