    Lone Shore (OOC)

    LONE SHORE
    IC

A century ago, the Old World was beginning to strain under its own weight. Their population booming, their resources waning, the two great nations that reigned over the continent – the egalitarian Kingdom and the indomitable Empire – descended into a series of scattered battles and eventually into total war. To escape from the bloody conflict, the lone explorer Wander, a celebrated scientist and scholar, boarded a ship and sailed away from his homeland, not knowing what he would find as he disappeared over the horizon. The two nations were too preoccupied with the war to notice his disappearance, but after many long years of strife they came to an uneasy truce - and they realized that one of the Old World's greatest minds had disappeared. Nearly fifty years after his departure, Wander was spotted on the horizon, piloting a storm-battered ship into a quiet harbor. Half-mad and nearly dead, he traveled across the Old World with tales of a lonely shore beyond the waves, a place of staggering beauty, terrible danger, and vast riches.

Wander’s revelations sparked a sudden new age of discovery, sending countless intrepid souls across the sea in search of vast treasures and new opportunities. Each of the two nations sent their legions to assert dominance over the new territory, while others set out on their own to find riches or start a new life. With only the scattered writings of the one explorer who went before them, these pioneers set out on the greatest adventure of their time, into uncharted lands and into an unknowable future.

    NEW ARRIVALS

Upon Wander’s return, the Old World was completely and permanently changed. The inland capitals of the Kingdom and the Empire were all but abandoned as a massive population shift brought hundreds of thousands of ordinary men and women to the coastal towns. Subjects of the Kingdom set out from Anchortown both by royal commission and on their own, to discover the new world’s riches and start a new life. The Empire dispatched exploratory legions out of Ironport to assert imperial dominance over the new world and reap its untapped resources. These were not the only ones to take the perilous journey; escaped prisoners, enterprising merchants, and spiritual pilgrims all answered the call to cross the sea.
You will play the part of a newcomer to the Lone Shore. You’ve literally just stepped off the boat, though where the boat has landed is up to you. We, of course, recommend you start at the Lone Shore Camp, a temporary settlement where you can team up with fellow explorers and acquire all of the equipment and goods to survive in the wilderness. However, you must first fill out a character sheet and be approved by the GM. Be creative - a veteran scout, an inept soldier, a reclusive woodsman, or an escaped prisoner are just a few ideas.

    CHARACTER SHEET
Name: (choose any English word; “Hawk” or “Reaper” good, “Mary” or “Steven” bad!)
Age: (be sensible; ages eighteen and under will not be going alone)
Loyalty: (Kingdom, Empire, or Independent – this can be changed later)
Appearance: (be imaginative, but please use text and not pictures)
Personality: (smart, stupid, kind, cruel, a good singer – everything goes)
Background: (who your character is, what they do, and why they’re going)

    EXPLORING THE LONE SHORE
This is an exploration game. In addition to interacting with your fellow characters, you will be traveling great distances in an inhospitable environment. To realistically represent the difficulty of pioneering an uncharted environment as well as to prevent people from traversing the whole length of the map in just a few pages, characters can travel from landmark to landmark. Each landmark, recorded in the Wanderer's Book below, is interconnected to several other landmarks - movement between them is up to one per post.

In the event of hostility between factions of the Kingdom and the Empire, if players cannot agree to an outcome (naturally, everyone wants their side to win) the GM will determine one based on the number of players involved on each side, the level of involvement of each player, and a little bit of luck.

    THE WANDERER’S BOOK

Everything Wander saw and experienced in the land beyond the sea is recorded faithfully and in great detail in a single tome, the Wanderer’s Book. In the years that followed his return, the book changed hands countless times, and after nearly a century its many pages have been stolen, lost, or destroyed. Some of its pages now belong to ordinary civilians, who jealously guard them and hope to use the knowledge they contain for their own goals. Others are on public display at the Kingdom’s royal library, for all to see and share. Several have fallen into the hands of the Empire, which carefully study them to unlock their secrets. No one alive today knows the whole story, but if the book was ever united it would be invaluable to anyone venturing to the Lone Shore.
    The Wanderer's Book

As your characters explore the Lone Shore, I will post pages from the Wanderer’s Book, an important in-story document, on both the IC and the OOC. These will contain important and valuable information about the places you find, the creatures you meet, and the treasures you might hope to discover. Consider it a guidebook to the New World, and consult it as you would any guide in a foreign land.

Here is a working list of the brave explorers of the Lone Shore and their stories:

    HISTORY

This is an outline of what has transpired so far on the Lone Shore.

    -----

On a cold morning, the Majesty's Rise disembarked at the Lone Shore Camp, and among its passengers Reaper and Hunter sought out Mayor Cinder to receive passage in and out of the outpost. At the same time, an enraged Wolf, having been ambushed by unknown assailants, went to Cinder as well to accost him for his alleged crime. In the harbor, an imperial vessel with Maverick aboard scuttled the Black Medallion, a privateer ship captained by Sparrow. Wading to shore, Sparrow went to Cinder just before Maverick himself was escorted to the same location to receive instructions for his mission. Not expecting such a crowd so early in the morning, Cinder quickly arranged for their free passage and stormed off.

As Reaper set out for the white cliffs and Hunter disappeared into the wilderness, Raven arrived at the Lighthouse just as the crowd dispersed. Impact quickly made his way from the imperial galley that brought him there to a local inn, where he found Wolf and started talking. Ransom disembarked from his ship the Into Black with a sizable imperial cohort. Ransom sought out Impact, hoping to find somebody who could protect an imperial expedition to the unfinished outpost atop the white cliffs, and he agreed. Wolf objected to the interruption, but as they left him behind he followed and eavesdropped on their plan. Meanwhile, Reaper found the cliff fortress abandoned, but was subdued by a strange figure in red robes. He vanished until he was discovered by Cinder, who was now accompanied by the monk Rushlight.

Sparrow was the first to arrive back at the cliff fort, but she was swiftly followed by Impact and a small force of Ransom's soldiers, then Wolf with a band of rebels, then Reaper, and finally Ransom with the rest of the imperial cohort. The skirmish between royals, imperials, rebels, and independents began. After holding her position for some time, Sparrow realized she was vastly outnumbered and fled into the Pale Highlands. Reaper took her place, defending the fortress alone, but soon imperial soldiers and Wolf's rebels infiltrated the outpost. The superior numbers of imperials seized the fortress and claimed it for the Empire, christening it The Overlook. The imperials set to work rebuilding the fortress, while Ransom returned to Lone Shore Camp for supplies and Impact sought out Wolf, who took out his anger against an imperial warship.

NIGHT FELL, and the explorers encountered for the first time the mysterious horde of fighters that plagued the New World settlements.

    Name: Reaper

    Age: 27

    Loyalty: Independent.

Appearance: Reaper is clad in full leather armor that is dyed a dark brown / blackish sort of color to allow him better concealment in wooded areas. At first glance it looks flimsy and unable to withstand a blow, but on the inside are pockets that have thin steel plates over his vital areas (Chest, Thighs, back, sides, and forearms) to give him an extra defense if his combat knowledge fails him. The leather armor is secured by metal chains instead of leather ties to prevent it from snapping and coming apart, and to withstand his acrobatics. Over this he wears a black cloak that comes down to his calves, and hides his face from sight. Although unlike most cloaks, it sits close to his body and has small tears throughout the fabric to reduce wind resistance and keep it from flowing out behind him and getting caught on anything that might be sticking along his travels. On his back lies a large scythe with a wooden handle reinforced with steel (As his armor is), and a steel blade treated to crudely match the color of dried blood.

For facial features, he is completely bald and has a somewhat thick beard that hides his mouth from view. his neck, cheeks, and lips are horribly scarred from where he was held in the Imperial cells, and was given 'corrective action' for his crimes. His eyes are a deep green color, and his hair is an odd mix of black and brown, giving him a somewhat homeless appearance.

His body is toned due to the amount of training required to be in his 'line of work' as an adventurer of sorts, but has a layer of fat over it that he likes to call his 'winter coat'. Of course it's just an excuse to be lazy on weekends when he likes to drown himself in Ale. He stands at a normal height of 6'0" evenly, and has the posture of a noble that conflicts with his ragged appearance.

Personality: For the most part he is a quiet, humble, and kind person. But when it comes to his job he becomes a serious person, although it's a calming seriousness, nothing too frightening. Because of how often he moves around, he hasn't had the time to settle down and find friends or a wife, but it's how he likes it, and is fine with meeting and talking to strangers every once and a while.

Background: Reaper's love for war began at an early age, due to his Father's constant bickering, and his Mother's neglecting habits. His Father had mostly filled the roles of both parents with the cooking, cleaning, educating, and all around care that he gave Reaper. Though he lacked the soft qualities that a Mother should have, giving Reaper almost no empathy skills whatsoever. He had a decent education as his Father was a well-learned man, and Reaper had always been the type to retain information quite well. That skill plus the constant manual labor he participated in with his Father to keep food on the table, Reaper was a good candidate for a soldier starting at a young age. This 'training' continued into his late teens, until Father forced Reaper away and into the world with nothing but the clothes on his back, and that week's pay in his coin pouch. Reaper turned this petty change into a small fortune through gambling, stealing, fighting, and honest-man's work, though it took a few years.

The facade of being an honest, hard working man didn't last too long, although, as he was eventually found out through the Imperial Legion's snooping around. He didn't put up a fight as they ransacked his small room and found all of the incriminating contracts and agreements he had formed over the years of gambling and organized fights, and went along with their shackles a little too easily. Not saying that he had a plan, he just knew that he would be able to get out sometime in the near future; At least within a week he had told himself. This proved true after he was brought to the dungeons and hurried through processing, as he was able to sneak a small metal ring that was hanging off a Guard's belt. He hid the metal item underneath his tongue for five days, the taste eventually causing his expression to become one of great disgust, but this was short lived as he finally got what he was waiting for.

He waited for the Guard to take away his bowl of food and lock the cell door before scrambling to his feet and getting to the small window at the back wall of his cell. Reaching up into the opening he fumbled around until he felt a large stone, and took it into his bear paw with a smile on his face. He spit the ring out with a look of relief in his eyes and slowly moved over to the lock mechanism in the cell door, then inserted the ring as if it were a key, leaving some of the metal showing. He then brought the rock back and hammered the ring into the mechanism with a single blow, the hard ring breaking through the worn metal of the lock as if it were nothing. Knowing he had just seconds before the Guards would be upon him, he threw the door open wide and bolted out of his cell and into the narrow corridor, already knowing which way he needed to move.

Getting out was no easy task however, as when he stepped out into the open, the Guards were already waiting for him. Somehow appearing from behind him, he felt strong arms grasp his shoulders and despite his thrashing, they brought him to his knees. He heard the sizzling of hot metal as a crude mask was brought to his face. He kicked his leg out and caught one of the Guards in the ankle with enough force to crack it, and he attempted to jump to his feet as the pressure was released from one shoulder. This caused the red hot metal to slide across his face and neck, taking skin with it and leaving what wasn't torn off to bubble grossly. He cried out and wrenched his other arm to freedom, using the momentum caused by his sudden release as speed to get as far away from his captors in as little time as possible. This proved to be an easy enough feat as the passerby's just stared at him in wonder as he sprinted by with blood, puss, and tears streaming down his face and staining his shirt.

He ran for what seemed like hours, thinking it impossible that he was able to make it past the main gate of the city without being stopped. Then again, everyone else was probably back at the Jailhouse, trying to get a grasp on what had happened in the span of 15 minutes that resulted in an escaped prisoner and two injured guards.

It was this moment in time that Reaper decided he would find a way to become invisible, so that he might be able to do what he pleased without the chances of such an event happening again. That and the fact that his escape most likely left him as a fugitive.

Reaper was able to make his way to a new town where he holed up for the few years it took for his wounds to heal decent enough for him to venture out in public without getting hostile glances, and enough time to completely change his look to keep him hidden from his upcoming enemies, and anyone that might be trying to hunt him down for the bounty he was sure was on his head. It was here that he caught wind of the adventure of his dreams, a chance to get away and start anew. So naturally he jumped at the chance and was one of the first to hop on the boat to the Lone Shore.

    Name:Raven

    Age:32

    Loyalty:Independent

Appearance:An older looking individual at first glance, his face covered in the evidence of his hardened lifestyle. He sports a slightly longer than average beard shaded with gray and white tones, along with a slightly longer than average, scruffy, and unkempt hairstyle that is also shaded in grays and whites. His body seems slender, but toned, and he reaches about 5'10" in height.

Raven wares an assortment of animal skins and furs that seem to have been sewn together to fit around his body. Though at first glance it seems clumsily thrown together, you can tell with closer look the stitching and patches are expertly done. His head is usually covered in a similar crafted hood that hides most of his face, though this was intended for weather protection, it works well to keep his identity a secret as well. Though the thick leathers and furs are heavy, he can move in them surprisingly well due to his long time spent in them. The clothing's thickness also provides a substantial amount of protection against various forms of attacks like fists, smaller blades, arrows, maces, and claws.

He usually can be seen with a larger than normal bow on his back, though any other weapons seem to be hidden from sight under his many layers that cover his entire body. He also wares a small bone tooth necklace on the outside of his furs, to show off as a trophy.

Personality:Raven has always been a tad overconfident in himself, his ego is well deserved however and spurs from his many years of experience within what little wilderness the old world still possesses. He generally sticks to being a loner, but has always enjoys the company of others when and if the opportunity arises. He considers himself generous, though truthfully is greedier than he lets on, but he does have his moments of generosity. Generally he is an overall fun loving individual, and though his social interaction can often come off as a tad hardened and distant, he can clearly be seen as a kind individual.

Background:Most of his young life was spent on the outskirts of one of the kingdom owned out laying towns, never one to settle down and just work in the bakery that he grew up in, he was always out coming up with crazy adventures and exploring what little he could. He dreamed of one day leaving his small town, getting away from the crowds and living under the stars. Like most boys his parents didn't really see much of his dreams, but let him have them anyway, thinking he would grow out of them, but as time went on, things didn't go quite as they had thought.

Once he reached the age of 17, Raven found himself in the company of hunters, mountain men that worked together to hunt, skin, and trade their goods in towns for the things they couldn't make or find on their own. Soon, despite his parents complete disapproval, he left with them into the wilderness. They quickly began to teaching him their ways, hunting, foraging, surviving, and he learned it all with ease. In a short time he surpassed his teachers and became their equal.

Many more years of his life were spent with this troop, no longer was he a softened boy, he was a mans man. However soon the nature of man crept over him like it does. He started longing for more, to see the world, and know its beauty. With a grateful farewell he parted ways with his friends. Setting out alone and into the world.

Many more years passed on his journey alone, along the way he found his skill at hunting and killing the creatures of the wild to be a marketable one. He sold his expertise to those that needed it, towns burdened by creatures killing their flocks, homes raided by unseen entities, and good people afraid to sleep at night from fear. He cured these towns of their fears, hunting beasts that could rip a man in two with their bare claws, slaying dens of creatures that would tear a man to shreds, this is what he did now, and he was good at it.

Several more years passed, life becoming rather routine for him at this point. Once again he began to crave something new, his ever increasing age making these cravings more substantial. His life could end at any time, and he knew it. Old age, or sickness, the unseen enemies of his lifestyle, was what he feared. He wanted something new before he passed on, one more fight to put under his belt. He decided to the new land was his best course of action, the new trees, the new creatures, all of it was exactly what a man like him needed, and what a wild land like that needed was a man like him.

Gear:Raven's most seen weapon is a longer than average recurved longbow, hand made of a fine wood that constricts to its original form, it can apply a massive amount of force behind the arrows it fires at even lighter draws. He primarily uses broad head arrows, but has made bodkin arrows on the fly due to their ease.

His real weapons that he keeps hidden under the layers of furs and skins are two hand axes. They are larger than hatchets, but much smaller than most woodcutting or battle axes. He is fairly deadly with them and trains regularly, keeping up his skill as best he can. These axes have a golden vine carving connecting the blade to the wooden handle and down to the hand rest.

His final weapon is a small highly decorative royal flintlock pistol. The pistol is rarely used, its slow, clumsy, and expensive, plus he likes they way it looks. The pistol was a reward for one of his many jobs, A royal from the kingdoms gave it to him as payment for saving his life. Despite the lack of use, he still enjoys carrying it with him, it looks nice and you never know when something like that would come in handy.

MechaDraco, mind if we stick with the fist name? "Raven" only?

Otherwise, your profile looks good! No tale of discovery's complete without a mountain man.

I dont mind at all, also one little thing I am slightly curious about, the rule of 10 miles and then you cant move any further, what exactly are these supplies that are needed? and why exactly is it someone can't actually hunt and fend for themselves enough to be able to continue their travels? I mean I am not just saying for my character persay, It is more of a question of, what exactly is it that causes you to have to stay still.

Couldn't their perhaps be another mechanic you could work in that would allow you to perhaps, spend one post to gather resources, allowing you one extra mile of movement, or perhaps something similar to this? That way progression through the world can continue and it allows for some error in the less experienced in traversing harsh landscape, but still keeps those trying to rush the exploration in check, making this particular method of travel slow and monotonous and impractical.

just a little curious is all, of course i will follow your rules, I just simply want to know the details of this decision in particular I guess.

We should be putting the OOC in the other thread, I think.

On this site, starting a RP has three steps: one, the Interest Check, where you pitch an idea to see if people like it. Second, the OOC, which is the official out-of-character thread where people fill out CS's and talk about the RP. Finally, once enough people sign up, the IC starts, and the RP commences.

MechaDragon, I'm glad you brought that up. The main reason for those rules is both to add some plot opportunities (having to send a search party out for a lost caravan can be tense stuff!) as well as to keep the exploration progress at a steady pace - as you point out, though, there are other ways to do this, and I'd like your guys' input. At least from a story perspective, "supplies" would be anything from food to water to firewood, the necessities of life in the wild.

Your "spend a post foraging for supplies" idea is actually a pretty elegant solution for the "just plain stuck" scenario, though. I think I'll add it - anybody else have any thoughts on this subject?
