    Beyond Dark OOC

    The IC

In the year 2286, humanity has extended its reach beyond the borders of our solar system. Colonies have been established on terra formed planets and contact has been made with alien species from nearby systems of the galaxy. After years of initial combat after first contact, there is a fragile understanding to stay with in respective territories. An understanding that is occasionally ignored as patrols travel outside their territories and 'mercenary' groups attack borderland colonies. Tension is at an all time high between humanity and the violent race known as Nevoans, while the more peaceful Rengians remain neutral in the conflict.

Resources are running thin in each civilization and the race to establish colonies and outposts in the Expanse is on. The hostile and dangerous expansion as forced the Earth Defense Fleet to send its best to protect the borderland colonies and the expansion projects. Invaluable to the success of the operation is the EDF Zermic, a monument to the might of the human fleet and the ship that the best pilots in the fleet call home. You are one of these exceptional pilots, a member of the elite Epsilon squadron. Currently, the Zermic is patrolling the outer reaches of the human territory, en route to a terraforming project in the Expanse.

As discussed on PM, I'm happy to take on the tech/help role.
I'll get my character sheet up this evening (I'm on UK time) as I won't have time to fill it out fully during my lunch break. Plus it gives me time to formulate a good character.

    -----------------------------------

    Name: Alexander Winters
    Call Sign:
    Birth: 27/06/2251, Armstrong City, Luna
    Gender: Male
    Race: Human
    Marital Status: Single
    DOE: 2269
    Rank:
    Service:

June 2271 - August 2275 Aldrin Training Station, Luna
    Op. Deployment
Sept 2275 - Jan 2276 Heinlein Station, Ganymede
    Jan 2276 - Aug 2277 EDF Illustrious
    Requested transfer, request approved
    Aug 2277 - Jan 2280 EDF Agincourt
Squadron stood down, reassigned to Test & Experimental wing,
Feb 2280 - March 2285 EDF Test & Experimental Wing, Ceres
Rotated back to active duty squadron, stood up for duty with Epsilon Squadron, EDF Zermic

    Psych Evaluation:
Subject has a strong sense of duty and responsibility, yet displays a somewhat dismissive and laissez-faire attitude at times to serious situations and desperate tasks; evidently a coping mechanism for trauma and danger. When pushed, displays considerable anger and aggressive tendencies, channeled into the performance of his role.
Shows considerable aptitude for learning and development in his role, despite occasional stubbornness. Has trouble grasping complex scientific principles, but often hides true intelligence behind good-humoured-yet-dumb facade.
Aggressive tendencies show particularly in piloting style. Conceivably could pose a risk to self and others if not operating as part of a squadron.

    Personal History:
Born to Janice and Christopher Winters. Janice was a private citizen, working as a hospital nurse; Christopher was an aerospacecraft engineer; formerly a pilot. He retired due to a wound sustained on a routine mission. Alex was enticed to join by the stories his father told him of his service, and those of his buddies.
He enlisted following his fathers' stories, and those of his fathers' friends. He received excellent grading scores on entry, but was soon noticed for his stubborn streak and 'lively' personality. He made many friends as a result and was somewhat popular, but not always for the right reasons, and developed a tough streak and a habit of challenging orders he doesn't agree with.
Following the successful completion of his training, he served within the Home system for the most part, but was soon seeking a reassignment following several brushes with authority and incidents of disobeying orders or breaking regulations - though in notable cases, it lead to a corrupt officer being exposed.
His later career was more exemplary, following a short period of leave and visiting home, as well as a discussion with an admiral. He later served with some distinction, though his stubborn streak remains strong, but has lead him to find favour with some officers and other members of the EDF as he shows considerable initiative and resourcefulness.
His stint as a test pilot and member of the experimental flight was very productive, and lead to a number of minor improvements in a number of design programs. Following this tour, he was requested for the elite Epsilon squadron, something he was surprised to hear, and accepted after some consultation with his colleagues and friends. However, his acceptance seems to have come with a careful and wary eye, due to his personal reputation as a 'wildcard'.

Could I play as an AI of some sort? Like an on board Targeting/Life Support AI on the fighter vessels or power armor.

Yep, which wasn't intentional but was beneficial. Hopefully, now the apps I receive are from serious and dedicated players so I won't have to worry about anybody disappearing on me and can get great players to help me build this little galaxy of ours. As I've said before I have a lot planned for this series and hope to see it take off.

Hm...I'm not totally against an AI. I can't see it being directly linked to the fighters or our armor, but as the Zermic's AI it could provide tactical analysis and mission updates through comms to the fighters, like EDI does for Shepard and crew.

I was thinking more like the JARVIS AI on Tony Stark's Iron Man suit, or like the AI on the Super Sneaky Stealth Suit in Fallout New Vegas Old World Blues. Here's the idea; say that in one of the Power armor, the pilot is for some reason incapacitated. The AI (me) can then take control over the armor and take the unconscious user somewhere safe. I can also act as a sort of extra eyes in power armor, or for a space ship, I can operate other parts of the ship without someone having to be there, like rear guns or some such. Of course, there are restrictions on what I can and can't do; for one, I'm only allowed to work with certain members, and even then they have to allow me to control whatever system they want me to control. Otherwise I'm just software.

I'd like to think of myself more as a Post-Synchronized Geth then EDI.

I don't know about others but I'd never trust an artificial intelligence, a virtual intelligence certainly, but never an artificial intelligence. Thus I'd never allow an artificial intelligence access to any critical systems and if I had an artificial intelligence for analyzing battle strategies there's no way I'd allow it access to any sort of communications outside of the briefing room in case it wanted to share our strategies with our enemies. Compartmentalization is absolutely necessary in such cases lest you give birth to race of deadly murderous machines.

You'd have to get someone to agree to have you as their AI and even then I'm still not wild about it, I'd have to see the CS's

That's been my reservation about it. I can't quite see a civilization that doesn't trust aliens to trust a machine with the potential to turn rogue. I'd be much more comfortable with a VI and that doesn't make more much of a character to play :/
