About the whole "Which came first" discussion, the first organized 'sect' of Christianity was Christianity... who would have thought? Shortly before Nicene believers in the teachings of the apostles began referring to themselves as "Christians" based on quotes from the bible, then Nicene, of course, organized things into the Christian Church. As far as the quote of someone referring to the church as a "Catholic" church... they meant a Catholic church, not the Catholic church. Before Catholicism existed the word had a meaning. :P I doubt this is where people actually began referring to the Christian Church as the Catholic church, but it is loosely Catholicism's origin for sure.
As far as this whole "Messianic Jews came first" argument... well duh. As far as I read on Messianic Jews, they are basically Christians who wanted to keep their jew heritage by continuing to refer to themselves as jews. I am sure people like this existed back then, but they weren't a large, organized body, nobody referred to them as "The Messianic Jewish Church". so this was not the first sect. Just because people who referred to themselves as jews but worshiped Jesus existed back the, doesn't mean there was a whole fucking sect of them. With this logic you could just as easily say one of the many heretic groups that existed in the Post-Apostle period was the first 'sect'. What you are doing here is connecting the Messianic Jews to all early Christians just because they might have acted in the same (And I am using 'same' very loosely) way that Messianic Jews do now. It was a transition period, and Christianity is quite heavily based of Judaism... Of course there might have been a strong mix of Jewish traditions and beliefs in Christianity right after it was created (There still is a good mix of them now), but that is completely different from people who choose to hold both Jewish and Christian beliefs in this day and age. Forcing a connection there is just a stupid excuse to refer to your Church (I'm assuming it's your Church because why else would you defend it so hard) as the first.
