I'm currently looking for a job for over the summer. My parents are demanding that I re-apply at a camp I worked at over the summer last year. There are a few problems I have with this. One involves the fact that I'm studying abroad in May, and after I come back, I have 20 days to write a 30 page research paper that is supposed to be like, my college "capstone." If I work at said camp, I would be working almost 24/7 for 6 days of the week. I would get approximately 6 hours each Saturday to work on this paper, since laptops/computer use is not permitted during the week. Given the time span, I would only be allowed to work on my research paper for a total of 12 hours out of the 20 days I have. I have an issue with that.
I also have an issue with the nature of the work itself. I worked there last year and it was great, I wouldn't trade the experience. However, since then, I've kind of done a lot of self-discovery, and acknowledged that while I am capable of having social skills and can behave rationally while surrounded by people, I don't want to do that for an entire summer again. I really value time to myself, and find it difficult to be constantly surrounded by people. I went through a lot of drama and insecurity being surrounded by the same 12 people last summer.
That being said, I acknowledge and am fully familiar with the concept of hard work. I'm perfectly willing to work 40+ hours a week. I'd rather work full time, put in lots of hours every day, come home, spend some time by myself, do a bit of writing, reading, etc, go to sleep, wake up, and do the same thing over again.
My parents decided to give me "deadlines" for turning in applications to a few different camps. They've also taken to calling me a "lazy sinner" for not wanting to work at camp. They're refusing to help me pay for my May term (which they're only helping minimally for, anyway) or any other part of my college expenses, including co-signing for a private student loan, unless I have a summer job by March 29.
So my question is, do I just fill out the applications for the sake of pleasing them and the sake of getting a job at all (and thereby forfeiting my sanity and the ability to write a good paper), or just refuse? x__x I've been losing sleep over this shit.
