    Golden Age of Pyracy: Anthem of the Atlantic ~OOC~

    Golden Age of Pyracy: Anthem of the Atlantic
    A Jivusa and Click This Production

    Chapter 1: Prologue

    "Shipping traffic between Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe began to soar in the 18th century, a model that was known as triangular trade, and was a rich target for piracy. Trade ships sailed from Europe to the African coast, trading manufactured goods and weapons for slaves. The traders would then sail to the Caribbean to sell the slaves, and return to Europe with goods such as sugar, tobacco and cocoa. Another triangular trade saw ships carry raw materials, preserved cod, and rum to Europe, where a portion of the cargo would be sold for manufactured goods, which (along with the remainder of the original load) were transported to the Caribbean, where they were exchanged for sugar and molasses, which (with some manufactured articles) were borne to New England. Ships in the triangular trade made money at each stop.

    As part of the war's settlement, Britain obtained the asiento, a Spanish government contract, to supply slaves to Spain's new world colonies, providing British traders and smugglers more access to the traditionally closed Spanish markets in America. This arrangement also contributed heavily to the spread of piracy across the western Atlantic at this time. Shipping to the colonies boomed simultaneously with the flood of skilled mariners after the war. Merchant shippers used the surplus of sailors' labor to drive wages down, cutting corners to maximize their profits, and creating unsavory conditions aboard their vessels. Merchant sailors suffered from mortality rates as high or higher than the slaves being transported. Living conditions were so poor that many sailors began to prefer a freer existence as a pirate. The increased volume of shipping traffic also could sustain a large body of brigands preying upon it."

    This chapter will be a prologue-esque one, for introductions for the characters.(Any characters added later will be introduced in their own little way.)

    Rules:
    1. No godmodding.
    2. This will be a mature roleplay, so cursing and sexual references will be included. If you must, you can censor it.
    3. 1-2+ paragraphs a post, at least decent grammar and punctuation.
    4. For the most part, posts must correspond with the chapter.(Chapter 1 is a prologue, so nothing really to follow there).
    5. If the Captains want, people can apply for positions on the crew. All unfilled spots will be controlled by said Captain.
    6. You don't have to be a pirate. You can be a soldier, trader, etc.
    7. If you want to be a pirate, it's a first-come first-serve.

    Name: Viktor Cyrus Ulchried
    Nickname(s)(Optional): Astaroth, Captain Ulchried, Captain Astaroth
    Gender: Male
    Appearance: He has dark charcoal hair, with streaks of plain grey. Medium hair length, worn tied back into a tail. He also keeps his beard and moustache short. His skin is tanned by sun from many voyages across the oceans. He has a very visible scar running from the top of his left eyebrow to his mouth. His face is very masculine in shape. He is about 6'5" in height. He has broad shoulders and is in a near peak physical condition.

    He wears a white outfit under a large, grey coat. He has tall, black leather boots from Venezia, Italy. He has gloves that are made of the same black leather with iron vambraces over them. He wears a bandolier and belt with holsters and a scabbard attached. He also has a pauldron over his left shoulder, attached by a smaller belt and made of thick iron.
    Age & DOB(The story starts in 1712): Age 33, Born December 31, 1689
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Bio(At least a para. of info): Viktor's father, Wulfgang Ulchried, was a naval commander turned pirate, and his mother, Valeria de Leon, was his father's first mate. Wulfgang was a hardy man, more brave and cunning than any other Viktor had ever seen. Valeria, she was equally as hardy Viktor's father, braving waters strong enough to tear a Man-O-War in two. They were both the heads of the Astaroth, the name of the ship(and later Viktor's trademark nickname). Viktor grew up on his father's ship, learning the art of naval warfare and how to command a ship & crew, earning his 'sea legs' at the age of 15. He had even commanded many crusades across the seven seas in his father's absence.
    By the time he was a man, his father had become ill with a disease unknown in that time period. His legs failed and he eventually lost his memory, but not his spirit. "You could never bring down the old man's spirit," Viktor had said many times when retelling the story of his father and the legendary Astaroth. When Viktor was 19, and a week before his father's death, he, his mother and his father, both in their fifties, all went on one last voyage across the Bermudas, to an island called Cuba. There, he had pulled off a record heist for the Astaroth: an equivalent of 26 thousand dollars in pounds of gold, silver and gems.
    They were ready to return the spoils to the Parisian black market for a huge pay before Wulfgang had a heart attack, dying in the captain's quarters, at his desk, in his chair. Viktor had witnessed the whole thing, and so did his mother. They did not talk, and just threw the spoils out into the water for god-knows-whatever reason. That evening, Wulfgang received a burial at sea, put on a rowboat with most of his riches and burned, sinking to the bottom of the ocean. With that, his mother retired, and Viktor had usurped the command and crew of the Astaroth.
    Equipment: A cutlass made of thick steel and engraved with ancient runes, he calls Beelzebub. He has dual flintlocks in holsters in either side of his belt. There is also a hidden dagger in his jacket.
    Role(Pirate, Naval Commander, Soldier, Crew, Trader, etc): Pirate Captain
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Name of Vessel(Role-dependent): Astaroth
    Brief Overview of Vessel(Role-dependent): The Astaroth is an ex-warship frigate Viktor's father had "obtained" from his service in the naval forces. It was passed down to Viktor, and the name of the great vessel also became a nickname for Viktor as well to his crew, traders, Naval Commanders, and fellow seafaring people, mostly enemies who shouted it right before their ship was blown to pieces.

    The Astaroth's crew consists of 190 men and women, along with 10 powder monkeys. Fifteen 20-powder cannons mounted on either port or starboard, thirty total cannons, and four swivel guns on either side of the steering wheel. A large, copper & steel ram on front and copper & iron plating on the sides and hull. There is also a large, hidden cannon on the second deck. It is accessed by a compartment and it is used when ramming attacks are needed.

    Name: Alcott Hamilton
    Nickname(s)(Optional): 'Ham', 'Captain Ham', and 'Captain Hamilton'. He is also called 'Hammy' by his crew, but takes great offense to this name.
    Gender: Male
    Appearance:
    Hamilton has short, pitch black hair that is messy and just below medium length. During battles, he wears a formal powdered white wig to cover his head as a sort of formality, but normally just keeps it off. He is normally clean shaven and has a long, masculine face. He is quite fit for a person of his former command.
    He wears a white cotton shirt under a long, black pea coat, and has thick beige pants. He wears dark brown leather boots that reach up to shins. He has a large leather belt over his pea coat that keeps the scabbard of his smallsword and two holsters for flintlock guns at his side.

    Age & DOB(The story starts in 1712): Age 28, born July 19th, 1684
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Bio(At least a para. of info): Hamilton was born to normal, British middle class merchants. Encouraged by his parents, He joined the Royal Navy when he turned 18. His family's connections to the sea and his ambitious personality allowed him to join as a midshipman and quickly rose through lieutenant until receiving his final promotion to commander at the young age of 24. He was given command of new frigate and was posted to the Americas, as a patrol for pirates along the British colonies. He lost the ship only a few months later after it was forced ashore in an engagement with several sloops and a brig of the Jolly Roger. He and his crew were captured for ransom and eventually released; the crown declared the ship written off and was court-martialed severely for the loss of the ship, and was harshly disranked to seaman. Bitter about his punishment and on the edge of ruin and bankruptcy, he turned to piracy, hiring several men and stole a sloop to recover his former command, which he had believed was perfectly recoverable. The ship was found and repaired. Empowered by this, he preyed on the British merchant shipping in the Atlantic as personal vendetta against the Royal Navy. His training and experience as a naval officer lead him to quickly become one of the most feared corsairs in the Atlantic ocean.
    Equipment: He carries an intricate, iron-hilted steel smallsword that he was originally given when he obtained his last rank. He has two flintlock pistols at sides, and also carries a parrying dagger on his belt.
    Role(Pirate, Naval Commander, Soldier, Crew, Trader, etc): Pirate
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Name of Vessel(Role-dependent): Revenge (Ex-HMS Revenge)
    Spoiler

    Brief Overview of Vessel(Role-dependent): The HMS Revenge was Hamilton's original command as a Commander. Launched 1708, she is still a relatively new vessel, and incorporated the latest in British naval technology. She was a flush deck frigate and was rated a sixth-rate, mounting 28 12-pounder long guns, to bring 14 guns to bear per broadside. It also equipped four long-nines as stern and bow chasers. The hull is copper plated to increase speed and efficiency.

    As a larger frigate, she had a crew complement of 170 officers and crew, just below the standard 200 for ships of her size. Her crew complement naturally does not include a rifle detachment and therefore has less crew-members.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Anything Else(Optional): The attached picture was an illustration I drew for another pirate roleplay. It died so quickly though it never saw good use, so I'm reusing the picture as it also happens to be a 28er.
    "What is this? A ritual for the evil god?"
    "No. It's an economic analysis..."
    I'm great with computers, but printers are evil, and networking is magic. I will try to fix what I can, but I don't know magic, and I'm not evil.
    Name:Bryon Shay
    Nickname(s)(Optional): Sierra (See-era)
    Gender: M
    Appearance: He's fairly tall. Around 6'3"-6'4"ish. He has blonde hair which is just a little past his shoulders. He's fairly handsome but is more rugged handsome as he spends his time at sea. He is generally clean shaven but he has moments where he forgets to shave as something more serious (like a battle) is going on. He wears traditional leather boots that allow good movement. He usually wears a plain white undershirt when he's at sea and if the weather permits and wears soft pants that allow him to move quickly and swiftly. He also has a diamond encrusted chain and medallion that he believes as sort of a good luck charm that he stole off his first plunder.
    Age & DOB(The story starts in 1712): Born March 3, 1687 so he's 24/25 depending where in the year you are.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Bio(At least a para. of info): Bryon was born to upperclass parents and was the second of two boys. As a boy he was quickly trained in the arts of hand to hand combat and swordsmanship. As a boy he despised learning to use any sort of rifles or pistols as his mother died at the hands of a gunman when he was young. He grew out of that phase but was never taught how to fire a gun so his skills shooting are slightly below average. As a youngster his father urged him to join the Royal Navy and at the young age of 21 enlisted to serve under Alcott Hamilton. He quickly grew to respect and admire the commander and the two become good friends. When Hamilton lost the ship and he and the rest of the crew, including Bryon, got captured and severly demoted Bryon's father was severely embarrassed and cut off all ties with him. The closest thing to family he had left was Hamilton, who was like a brother to him. The two took off to the seas and Bryon was fine staying underneath Hamilton's leadership. His skills in fighting proved to be a great asset to the ship and, by his nickname, he is known as one of the best fighters in the seven seas. He hopes that when he's older he can live in solitude off his plunder and refuses to tell anyone, other than Hamilton, his real name.
    Equipment: He has duel steel swords with a gold hilt, which he got off one of his many plunders with Hamilton. He also carries two pistols but doesn't use them much because of his lack of proficiency with them.
