Pretty Much Dead Already ~ The Walking Dead IC

In light of AMC's The Walking Dead nearing the end of season three, the illustrious Chanda and I have decided to oversee a new zombie RP which will, ideally, stand apart from the short-lived, poorly managed messes which have come to characterize the the average zombie apocalypse roleplay nowadays. With a carefully picked cast of characters and consistent, concrete management, we hope to have a long, unique and compelling run.

So join us if you think you've got the guts.

For convenience, here is a link to the current setting: Akron, Colorado

    Name: Clyde Clemence

    Age: 28

    Gender: Male

Appearance: A somewhat tall man, the scarcity of food since the outbreak has further accentuated his non-muscular, lean frame. A barbed-wire tattoo around his left bicep serves as a reminder of his days in prison, but is usually hidden under sleeves of some kind. A gruff looking, bearded face houses shifty brown eyes. His short brown hair is almost always covered with a bandana of some sort, a habit he got into in prison that he never really got out of.

Clothing/Gear: In the interests of utility and subtlety, Clyde quickly ditched his prison jumpsuit in favor of clothing more suited to roaming the wilderness; this manifested in a rugged black windbreaker and a pair of rip-stitch BDU pants in ERDL pattern, tucked into black leather military boots that lace up to the mid-calf. This choice of camo and army boots has fooled some gullible survivors into believing he's ex-military of some sort, but he usually avoids lying about being a soldier because it's a hard lie to keep up with.

Weapons: Clyde's only two weapons are a standard red fire axe he stole out of a broken down firetruck and a red-handled stiletto switchblade he carried long before the outbreak, which he keeps in the pocket of his BDUs.

Inventory: Clyde's a firm believer in the idea that backpacks are just another thing someone could grab you by, so he prefers to pack light. In the thigh pouches of his BDUs, he keeps some gauze, disinfectant, a flask of gin and four spare bandannas. In his left pants pocket he keeps his stiletto, and in his right he keeps a pocket knife with a can-opener, corkscrew, bottle-opener and scissors attached. In the left pocket of his windbreaker he keeps a lighter and a pack of Menthols.

Personality: Arrogant to a fault, Clyde acts mainly in his self interest, although he does his best to keep such a fact from others. Not a reliable or honest person, Clyde keeps his past in prison a secret, and instead prefers to tell everyone he was a security guard at an office building trying to pay his way through college. Clyde pursues material gain and power above all else; his ambitions are usually traitorous, and when it comes down to it, he'll do whatever it takes to keep himself safe. Considering himself a "team player", Clyde always tries to establish himself as the leader of any group, whether it's in his best interests or not. He only keeps others around to keep himself safe, and if you've outlived your usefulness, he won't hesitate to deal with you. He doesn't take orders well, to say the least, unless it's important for some long-term goal. An eloquent man, Clyde regards the outbreak as "the great equalizer," as it allowed him to shed his criminal record and gave him a chance at true freedom.

History: Born in Connecticut, Clyde grew up in the suburbs, scraping through a middle-class upbringing in a small town. Clyde was a compulsive liar and a troublemaker as well, and frequently found himself in trouble with the law. Although he started college as a Philosophy major, he flunked out because he preferred to skip classes and chase skirts instead of study and work hard. It was at this point that his family cut him off completely and kicked him out of the house. Without anywhere else to turn, Clyde moved moved in with a friend in Colorado.

In order to make ends meet, Clyde started selling drugs and shoplifting to make money. In a scuffle over missed payments, Clyde ended up killing a client in front of several witnesses. With no money to pay for a lawyer, Clyde plead guilty to manslaughter and was given fifteen years in a state penitentiary.

Clyde flourished in prison, where his scheming and lying led him to the top of the food chain, so to speak. He developed a close partnership with his cellmate, Marco, in which the two smuggled in tobacco for a profit. When the outbreak hit, the prison was isolated from the outside world. With no new supplies coming in and both the guards and the prisoners getting anxious, Clyde and Marco started a riot, hoping to escape in the process. The plan succeeded, although once they managed to get past the gates, the two were quickly pursued by a sizable pack of walkers. In order to secure his escape, Clyde shiv'd Marco in the back and left him for bait.

Deciding it would be better to fit in with the rest of the survivors (people had a tendency to distrust convicts), Clyde ditched the prison jumpsuit and began lying about his past. According to Clyde, he was an office security guard when the outbreak hit; he lost his fiancee to walkers and is now just looking to find a place to settle down. Clyde was accepted into a small group of survivors about a week after his escape -- they had guns, medicine, and cars. Hoping to secure all these things for himself, Clyde purposefully led a group of walkers to the camp to kill off the survivors. Although his plan worked, the camp was overrun too quickly for him to swipe the goods.

Clyde floated into Akron only a day ago, believing it to be safer than traveling on the highway alone.

    Name:
    Valerie Sydney Thornton

    Age:
    25

    Gender:
    Female

    Appearance:

Valerie stands at about 5'8, has very lightly tanned skin and a lean, athletic build, reminiscent of her love for sports, parkour, and skateboarding back before the world went to pot. She still finds the time to squeeze in some training to keep up her athleticism, despite everything else. Never a very cautious person, her knees and elbows bare the faint scars of her many slip ups.

She has dark brown-black hair to her shoulders which is almost always loosely tied back into a low ponytail at the nape of her neck. Long and short tousled bangs frame a lovely, feminine face- slightly put off by piercing grey-blue eyes and an emotionless expression. Overall, it's typically easy to assume she isn't an overly happy nor approachable person at first glance- which can often be a bit deceiving.

She has three tattoos: the words "The curse of love is the cause of the pain." in small black grunge letters spiraling around her wrist, a design of long black wings along the center of her back, and a small string of music notes across her collar bone. She has three silver and blue stud earrings on either ear and an upper hoop in the right.

    Clothing/Gear:
Valerie has never been one to put much effort into her appearance- not since her naive teenage days when she first stepped foot into the world of make up and hair dye, that is. Since then, her style has mellowed out for the better. She wears a dark gray tank top underneath a yellow, zip-up, AC/DC hoodie, a black baseball cap with green along the rim of the bill, a pair of comfortable, but somewhat grungy looking boot-cut jeans with a brown belt and a pair of dirty white old Dunlop Volleys.

    Weapons:
Valerie carries three weapons in total: a simple hatchet (with a holster), a buck hunting knife, and a wooden baseball bat made of maple.

    Inventory:
Valerie carries quite a few light items in her pack. The main pocket houses a bit of gauze, medical tape, disinfectant, a needle and thread, rubber gloves, scissors, pain killers, tampons (all kept in a single zip lock bag), a small, mole-skin sketchbook, an unopened package of six firecrackers, a spare sweatshirt, a military green beanie visor, a pair of sunglasses, sturdy work gloves, and extra socks and underwear.

In the left side pocket she keeps a pen, LED flashlight, box of matches, and a waning pack of cigarettes. In the right, she keeps some folded up maps, a small, simple pocket knife, a wind-up TRS cable, and, likely her most valued possession, a solar-powered mp3 player- which is more often than not either tied around her neck as a square pendant or in her pants pocket. She stores it in her back pack when things get heavy and she doesn't want it to get in the way.

She wears a water canteen across her torso and keeps her buck knife strapped to a holster around her right thigh. The hatchet fits within the main part of her backpack, but is usually hung on her belt. She keeps the bat in or at hand all hours of the day.

    Backpack Inventory:

    Personality:
Often taken to be a little rough around the edges, Valerie is, at face-value, a crude, rock 'n' roll loving risk taker- something that the outbreak hasn't been able to change. She has a very "go with the flow" attitude, is a bit of a loner, and often appears to be off in her own little world. Whether or not her primary concern is survival is often called into question- especially the survival of others, but, that being said, Valerie is not a bad person and would never simply let someone undeserving die or suffer under her watch. She sincerely does try her arguable best to prevent others from being hurt. She has a useful amount of experience and skill when it comes to survival and doesn't want anyone to be killed, but her apathy towards death and what "needs to be done" often leads people to believe otherwise.

She is brutal in her careless honestly when she has something to say. She is slow to anger, down to earth, and level headed in most situations. Few things really get under her skin, but she dislikes people who think or try to act like they're perfect. She often simmers over self-righteous people who try to change or restrict her. Despite her Christian upbringing, Valerie is agnostic and open-minded- believing, for the most part, that the existence of God doesn't really make any difference.

She doesn't candidly trust everyone she meets, but often comes off as otherwise. Many may be deceived into thinking she is easy to manipulate simply because of her easy-going attitude. If she thinks you're lying she may not bother to delve deeper or could be curious to see where a plot may lead her. On the other hand, she couldn't care less whether or not people trust her, having no desire for leadership, power, or material gain.

She won't go completely out of her way to help folks in most cases, prone to lying and promising things she will later either forget about or claim to forget about, but instead runs by a moral compass that seems to point to it's own unique North. She typically fails to consider others at all when making her own decisions. Overall she is strong, unnervingly laid-back, and agreeable, but suffers from a severe lack of passion, in hindsight. Her prime motivation, for the time being, honestly seems to be as shallow as keeping herself entertained.

    History:
Growing up in Oregon, Valerie lived an average, uneventful life. Her parents were older by the time she and her twin sister, Rachel, were born.- having already raised a son who was knee deep in a police academy in another state at age 21. Val struggled with her grades- not entirely due to lack of smarts, but, rather, lack of incentive. School held absolutely no interest for her and by the time she was in high school, she was already well marked as "the problematic one" of both her family and classmates. For as long as she can remember, her relationship with her parents has always been one of tension and arguments-- especially with her mother. This was part of what led to her strong relationship with her older brother-- but we'll save that for another time.

She took a strong liking to parkour at a young age and her parents, grateful she was showing legitimate interest and dedication to something somewhat worthwhile, payed for her to learn. It often came in handy, threatening to cancel her subscription to get her to study and ultimately pushing her through school with at least a C average. Skipping classes, putting off homework, and sleeping during lectures; it was a wonder to everyone that she graduated at all. She spent the rest of her free time sneaking off to music concerts, hanging around the skatepark, and working at a comic book store to pay for the things her parents wouldn't.

After graduation, Rachel flew off to some prestigious, far away university and Valerie stayed at home to attend a community college. There, she met and picked up a long term boyfriend, moving in with him after barely managing to scrape up her Associate's at age 20. Mark was a simple minded boy, but kind and decent company, working as an automotive mechanic. It was pretty obvious that the relationship was more one-sided, but it was in her best interest to live away from her parents and have someone to be with. Eventually their relationship grew, or rather, diminished to be more open-ended-- ultimately leaving them more as "friends with benefits."

In an attempt to put her degree to use, she went through several different secretary positions over the course of a few years. She was fired from some and quit others, struggling to find a place that could hold her attention and wasn't, quote, "a complete drag". After a rather unpleasant experience working for a small, privately owned law firm, she finally settled for a fairly well-paying job as a parkour instructor by the time she was 23. It wasn't much at first, but it paid the rent.

Her relationship with her family and even her brother grew more distant with each passing year, but an opportunity to perhaps reconnect presented itself when her father's parents called for a family reunion at their cabin near Silver City, New Mexico. Valerie, who often skipped out on most family events, decided, for whatever reason, to make the trip out with Mark and his mother.

Four days after arriving at the cabin and one day before her brother's plane was scheduled to leave his home so he could join them, the outbreak began. Cut off from the city, a horde of walkers caught them off guard and, in the scuffle and confusion, her grandparents, parents, boyfriend, sister, and brother-in-law were all lost-- leaving her with her 5 year old nephew, Malcolm, and Mark's shrewish mother, Constance. After the carnage and shortly before the phones went down, Valerie received a lengthy message from her brother, warning them about what was going on, to stake out at the cabin, avoid big cities, and explaining that he had plans to do the same with his family, providing them with an address just in case.

Since then, Valerie has made an effort to join him there, albeit a very slow one. Much to Constance's displeasure, she has been making several seemingly pointless detours along the way, but nonetheless proven to be a responsible source of food and safety-- scouting out places for them to stay and taking risky ventures to obtain food and other necessities. After kifing some car keys from a house she looted, their progress, detours aside, has been without any major problems (according to Valerie). Several days ago, however, their car did break down several miles south of a little town called Akron in Colorado and, as usual, Valerie has been in no hurry to find an alternative and get on the road again after discovering the quaint little town.

    Name: Katherine "Kat" Ross

    Age: 27

    Gender: Female

Appearance: She stands at about 5'6" and has a runner's build. Her hair is wavy, shoulder length, and auburn. The left side of her bangs is a white streak that she displays with some pride at the unique feature. She has soft green eyes and a few freckles on her cheeks. Her stance is generally relaxed and she maintains good posture.

She has a wedding ring on her left hand's ring finger as a reminder of what she's lost. Other than that she has no jewelry as she always believed that it would get caught on something during one of her runs.

She has a butterfly tattoo on her right shoulder that she got as a present when she turned 18.

Clothing/Gear: She wears a pair of black sweat pants with a single vertical white stripe down each side. She wears an under armor shirt with a grey hooded sweat shirt over it. Her sneakers are Asics and they are fairly worn. Around her waist is a fanny pack and she has a Camelback she used to use on her runs.

Weapons: She has a claw hammer that she fits into her fanny pack for easy access.

Inventory: The Camelback's reservoir can hold up to 50 ounces of water. Besides the hammer she has two Nature Valley peanut butter granola bars in her fanny pack. In the pack of her Camelback is a simple first aid kit with band aids, bandage wrap, three pins, a box of 50 cotton balls, peroxide, tampons, and Tylenol. Folded up in the Camelback is also a picture of her now dead husband, Jason, and five year old daughter, Alicia.

In the pocket of her sweatshirt she has a runner's headlamp.

Personality: She is the definition of an outdoors woman. She spends every moment she can outside, so long as it's safe. She enjoys things such as camping, running, skiing, tennis, and cycling. As a stay-at-home mother she often took her daughter outside to share the enjoyment of it all.

Whenever she can she tries to remind herself of the good things in life, but with the way things are right now it's getting harder and harder for her to do so. Seeing the death of her loved ones cut down her sociability a lot. She used to be very active in community services and other events and was considered the life of the event. She enjoyed taking up leadership positions and helping people grow and develop.

Her nature is very nurturing and helpful. However after witnessing the event of her family's death, she lost a lot of the previous energy she had in helping. Instinct is a difficult thing to overcome though, and even now she'd jump to help anybody in need; she just won't talk their ear off while doing it anymore.

History: She grew up and lived in Colorado Springs for most of her life. Her parents raised her to be an outgoing and helpful child and that stuck with her for life. She made many friends throughout her childhood and was a very popular girl.

Sixth grade came around and she joined her school's cross country team and fell in love with the sport. She never became the best member of the team, but it wasn't long before she could run longer than anyone on the team. In the spring she played tennis with her friends and family and continued running almost every day. Being as healthy as she was she almost never became sick.

Her senior year of high school and she was accepted to Chamlain College for their education program for middle school and received a full scholarship for running. It was there she met the man that would become her husband, Jason. They shared many interests, and participated in many of the same activities. It wasn't long before they were dating.

She graduated early at twenty years of age and he graduated with her at twenty two. Together they moved around for two years, participating in marathons, and going camping. They visited tourism locations like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Zion Park, and Mount Rushmore. They never left the country in that time and settled down when Kat became pregnant with Alicia. They settled down in Denver, Colorado.

She stayed at home and raised Alicia while Jason worked as a doctor at the hospital mostly treating cancers. It was Jason's birthday when the outbreak went public and it was broadcasting all over the news. Jason stayed home instead of following through with his doctoral responsibilities in order to keep his family safe. A panicked man knocked on their door screaming for help and they let him in. He was torn up and feverish, so Jason brought him into the living room to have the space to clean him up and do what could be done to help him. Having been spending most of his time working with cancer patients, he was less aware of the virus than the doctors that were dealing with it directly, therefor he didn't know much about the symptoms and only knew that the virus existed not much else. The man died after four days and shortly afterwards turned and bit Jason several times before Jason smashed its head with the edge of the coffee table. Having been bitten in the neck, Jason bled out shortly afterwards. In a panicked daze, Kat hid in her room for a couple days with Alicia before she gathered herself enough to pack up what she could and run. They were intercepted by zombie Jason and Alicia believing her father was alright hugged him only to get attacked by him. In a frenzy, Kat found a claw hammer and used it to kill Jason. Unable to do anything to save her daughter, and frightened to tears, Kat ran.

She left Denver and moved from town to town not staying for very long in any single location. Akron is just another stop before she moves on to the next city. She might stay for a few days, maybe a week, and it all depends on how she feels.

    AUDITION POST:
    Name: Jason Daniels

    Age: 27

    Gender: Male

    Appearance:
    Spoiler
no hat, slightly longer (jet black colored) hair, facial hair black as well. Jason stands at about 6'1, with an average build. Apart from the two scars you can see on his face, he has a fair amount of scar tissue covering his back (particularly around the right shoulder and lower left quadrant) and on his left side, (over his stomach). Lastly, he has a tattoo of a shamrock on his right wrist.

    Clothing/Gear:
    Spoiler
As in the picture, he wears a well-worn leather jacket over a faded plaid overshirt. He also wears a pair of black jeans and on his feet, he wears an old pair of running shoes.

Weapons: Carries a Busse Team Gemini knife and a hatchet (both pictured below)

Inventory: Carries a small backpack (slightly larger than the one linked to below) containing a small amount of food and water (mostly granola bars, salted crackers, and trail mix) and a heavily folded blanket. In the middle pouch, he carries a fire-starting kit, and in the front pocket, he has stashed an old, torn photo of his family. When not in use, he keeps his knife in its sheath, which is hooked into his jean's belt. He keeps the axe secured in the "side pouch" of his backpack (the three green fabric strips in the picture)

Personality: Jason has a hard time learning to trust people because he has never been able to count on anybody. He prefers to keep others at arm's length, the less they know about him, the better. Before the outbreak, he wasn't much of a socializer, the outbreak was all the more reason to keep people away. However, over the last few weeks, he has been learning the usefulness of being a part of a group, his motivation is simply to survive, and if that means teaming up with others, so be it, doesn't mean he has to like it.

History: Jason was born and raised in Fort Morgan, Colorado. His family life was relatively quiet throughout his childhood. His mother and father got along well. He and his sister were as close as siblings could be, and they both had a good relationship with his stepbrother (his mother's son from another marriage). His father taught him how to hunt, fish, and survive in the wilderness, and Jason really thrived in the outdoors. Things all changed for Jason at 16 when his mother and sister tragically passed away in a car crash. The accident drove Jason into an "emotional coma" during which he went through the stages of grief over and over, and retreated away from humanity. While Jason was dealing with this, his father sunk into an alcohol-induced depression, and soon after, he started to get physical. Jason's stepbrother Michael moved out of the house around this time, and though he urged Jason to go with him, he couldn't leave home.
Over the next couple of years, Jason started to strike out from home, he started working long shifts at a sporting goods store, to spend as much time away from home as possible. All the time, he and his father grew further and further apart. When the outbreak occurred, Jason was out on a hunting trip for the first 48 hours following the initial case in Colorado. He returned home to find his world completely turned upside down. In the six weeks following the outbreak, Jason has been learning the new rules to survival and picking his way across the state, living off the land for the most part and adapting to the new world order. He has just arrived outside of Akron.

First thing first - Alchemist, thanks for getting in touch with me for this RP, although as you stated, we do not know each other. Do I know a thing or two about the walking dead? Hell yeah I do, I'm actually a great fan of the show (comics not as much, but you know, to each his own).

So... Yeah, I'll reserve this post for my audition sheet/post. And we'll see how everything goes from there. ^.^
