Act 1 – Meeting at Midnight
12th of Spring, Village Center of Dareth
The night was cool and clear. Moon and starlight, as well as the occasional sputtering torch, lit the small village of Dareth. The houses and other buildings were all quiet, the villagers having long since retired to bed. Their lives, like their village, relatively simple, they expected that the morning would bring a day much like any other. And for the most part they were correct…but for one young girl who sat by herself in the Village Center.
The Village Center was equally quiet tonight. The vendors’ stalls had been closed up and waited for their owners who would arrive at first light. The entire area was surrounded by a high wooden fence, and the inside square contained several flower beds and low stone benches. On one of these benches sat a girl with golden blonde hair. She wore a brown woolen shawl around her shoulders, over her dark green dress, to keep out the remaining chill of the night. She watched her breath condense in the air as she breathed. At any little sound she raised her head quickly, nervously checking the several gates into the Center. She was expecting someone. Several someones. She only hoped that enough decent people had seen her message. She would need help in the coming days – lots of it.
As she sat pondering she heard a sound that could only be approaching footsteps. She turned toward the direction they were coming from and smiled, her beaming face illuminated in the moonlight. “Welcome,” Alana said in a cheerful voice, “I’m so glad you’re here. I’ve been expecting you.”
