The Jupiter-II Incident

The year is 2156, by human standards, and late December has brought new discoveries, new advancements, and a new humanity. The last one hundred thirty years has seen some of the most astonishing advancements in mankind’s brief history as a species; from FTL travel thanks to the use of Ion Drives, gauss weaponry in its testing stages, and the greatest accomplishment to date: a terraformed and colonized Mars holding a population of close to two billion. With over twelve billion humans on Earth, the planet is starting to become an ecumenopolis (world city) as Venus’s terraforming has begun and Mars’s population increases by the day. The collective human governments don’t want to admit it, but they know the truth behind the coming years: Earth is dying. In a desperate attempt to find resources and living space for the booming population the newly formed Terran Colonial Republic and its Senate of World Leaders has sent out a request for the Terran Fleet of 57 vessels, both warships and scientific research vessels to be sent to Jupiter where they will begin a colonizing effort on the moon of Europa, also known as “Jupiter-2”.

Little do they know, Europa holds both the key to their salvation… And their destruction.

The Terran Colonial Republic

**Geneva, Switzerland

The collective government of mankind, the Terran Colonial Republic was formed in late 2132 as a political alliance between Earth’s nation-states. Essentially reassembling the United Nations as a ruling government, the Terran Senate and its subdivision, the Security Council, are the new sovereign powers on Earth even though its countries still hold ruling status over their own territories. Each year, a new Speaker of the Senate is elected from the Senate’s number; normally a person from the twelve Security Council nations (The United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Korea).

As of Friday, December 24, 2156, the current Speaker of the Senate is Ambassador Charles Robertson of the United Kingdom, who was elected in March of the same year. He will most likely be replaced in March of 2157 by the most popular candidate, Wang Li Zài, of Beijing, China. The Security Council handles the major disputes on both Earth and the colonies, from national security crises, territory disagreements, dwindling resources, and political disagreements. The capital of the human species, Geneva, Switzerland, is now the bustling epicenter of a world city with a population skyrocketing by the month. A sparkling gem of human creation, the past century has done wonders for the small city, turning it into an area of kilometer-high skyscrapers, luxury homes, major company headquarters, factories, and the United Nations headquarters where the Senate meets.

Mars, the second gem of mankind, is a newly terraformed world with a climate relative to that of Earth. A booming population of nearing two and a half billion and a new group of nation-states who have joined the Senate of the Colonial Republic, all give today’s Mars its life. The most famous features of this colonial world is its massive cities along the manmade coasts. With cars tearing through the skies and large spaceports accepting shipments from the mining operations in the asteroid belt each day give the cities a feeling of being the heart of the Republic. The most beneficial planet under human control, researchers believe that Mars will become the new “home world” of mankind within a thousand years as Earth’s climate becomes to hostile and its resources all vanish.

Luna, the third and final “colony” of man as of 2156, the moon of Earth now holds six cities within massive domes on its surface, each hold populations of close to ten thousand people. Though Luna holds little to no real interest, resource-wise, the proximity to the species’ homeworld is the main factor in the colony having been established in 2062. When Earth’s climate no longer sustains human life, it is believed that it is from Luna that man will attempt to revitalize the planet’s ecosystem for future generations to return home.

Terran Republic Technology

The standard ballistic weapon of the Terran Marine Corps, a collective force of all humanity, this weapon holds a sixty-round magazine and can be effectively lethal up to three hundred meters in the hands of a trained marine. Famous across Mars as the weapon of the frontier, the AR6 is the newly adopted weapon by many of the TMC’s Republican Divisions and is the most common weapon on the Europan colony effort. It can be modified easily into a submachine gun (AR6A) or a sniper rifle (AR6S) or even a heavy machine gun (AR6HG).

The newest innovation in exosuit technology, the L5 CESS is the top-of-the-line combat gear and exploration gear for humans in an unfriendly environment, be it a low atmosphere, vacuum, or extreme temperatures. A hard case torso along with soft-suit arms, legs, and neck allow for natural movement for the most part in reasonable gravity. A climate control suite, air filtration equipment, a medical suite, a communications array, and a holographic GPS/HUD display are all available for addition to the basic suit and come standard on the military version, which is a standard maritime-blue camouflage in color.

The Higgs Drive is the most advanced piece of technology in the human arsenal to date. Using relatively new methods, it can pass an electric current over a specialized sphere which fires a static burst of energy throughout a secondary hull within the ship. This bolt of energy is able to neutralize the Higgs Bosons within the particles that make up the respective vessel, rendering it massless for a period of time determined by the length at which the current is passed over the Higgs Drive. A vessel traveling in “Transient Space” a term derived from the time it takes to make a jump, can reach speeds of about 360 light-years in a twenty-four hour period. That means a trip from Earth to Sol in Transient Space would take roughly 0.000001054 seconds (1.054*10^-7 seconds or 1/10 of a microsecond) or one thousand times faster than the blink of an eye. However, this also means that a human could never feasibly control such a high speed jump, and therefore, a quantum computer with Artificial Intelligence is installed in all ships using the name: ISAAC or the Integrated Ship Artificial Algorithm Calculator. This computer is an obedient, artificially simulated life form capable of speaking via holographic displays throughout the ship and is normally linked to the helmsman’s terminals directly to assist in the run-times of the Higgs Drive.

The MHD Cannon mounted as a main gun on most UPAN warships uses a two meter long, 50kg, liquefied combination of iron, nickel, cobalt, and titanium superheated to nearly 50,000°K. To fire the weapon it requires a charged of roughly 100 terawatts of electrical output, or one hundred trillion watts of electrical energy. This amount of energy is achieved in the anti-fusion reactor, or Vector Drive Core, within the stern of the ship. When fired, it takes time to recharge the discharge valve, the firing mechanism which allows a large enough energy burst, to power a rail-gun to magnetically through the metals at up to ten percent the speed of light. This means that the liquid plasma bolt would slam into a target with roughly one petajoule or force, or the same force of the asteroid that killed Earth’s dinosaurs.

The Vector Drive Core is the most common human power cell aboard ships. It has two chambers, the hydrogen fusion reactor which powers the basic Flash Torch Thrusters, as well as the much hotter hydrogen anti-fusion reactor. The anti-fusion reactor vents interstellar and interplanetary hydrogen atoms into a chamber with anti-protons which creates an antimatter reaction generating roughly ten terawatts of electrical energy every second but at the cost of also generating more heat than the core of Sol. To counter this problem, ships vent this heat through pipes cooled by liquid nitrogen before dousing the plasma in the liquid nitrogen itself and venting the left over heat into space, so that the crew is not vaporized from an overheated drive system.

The most common drive system used by space vessels, Flash Torches are not unlike their more powerful cousins, the Fusion Torches; venting high-pressure hydrogen plasma into space, the plasma generated by vacuuming interstellar hydrogen from space around the vessel, allowing the vessel to use high speeds, acute maneuvers, and a steady, self-regenerating form of fuel.

Fusion Torches are the torches used to vent heated plasma from the anti-fusion reactor into space, jetting the vessel forward at high rates of speed nearly one hundred times that of early shuttles. It requires cooling every hour via liquid nitrogen or the torch heads will go through something referred to as: “Emergency Flash Venting” where the nozzles seal shut from the heat, melting the titanium alloy and vent the plasma back through the vessel and into the crew’s quarters.

In its early testing stages in late 2156, EMGT is the use of micro-sized MHD Cannon technology to fling sand-sized grains of iron down range at speeds near the speed of light.

All the ships in the TCR are built for the purpose of defending Earth against an theoretical alien threat, as well as shipping troops to and from bases on the colonies. They each carry the tag: "TRSV" which stands for: "Terran Republic Space Vehicle".

Tokyo Class Dreadnoughts: One kilometer in length and having a main gun that stretches 950m of the beam, the Tokyo class of Dreadnoughts were built for planetary bombardment as well as having the necessary fire power to pack one hell of a punch. Bringing to the fight, a massive main gun, as well as hundreds of broadside rifles stored in pressurized gun ports, the Terran Republic's Space Fleet's three Tokyo Dreadnoughts are the last resort in combat, as their main gun can generate a force of nearly two gigajoules, eight times that of a Kalinga Frigate, which is close to the power released by a thermonuclear weapon.

The <Elar-Öpha T’kxam> Carbine (lit. “Gun-4 Hunter” Carbine)

Standardized in the year 5678ei (1861 CE), the Citinian Republic’s use of the <Elar T’kxam> (designated the “LR4” by the TCR) as its main battle rifle has become something of legend throughout the Galaxy. When the red armor of the Republican Marines is seen along with their LR4s most militaries experience a rush of fear. Thanks to the rifles heavy reliance on kinetic energy, gauss technology, and a high magazine capacity of close to six thousand sand-sized pellets (which are accelerated to a speed close to that of light, making an impact relative to a .308 rifle), the <T’kxam> has become a standard weapon in many of the Republic’s allied armies as well. It is known galaxy-wide for its telltale snapping sounds, and is lethally accurate well up to 500m. An all-around great rifle, the LR4 is formidable foe in the hands of a trained user.

The <Th’on Kxonthr> (Shortened: <Th’okxonthr> Hard-Suit Body Armor (lit. “Body Shield”)

The hard suit worn by Republic troops is something of a marvel in its own right. Integrated life-support systems, heating and cooling systems, a holographic HUD mounted in-visor, linked communication channels, and a fully capable medical suite able to repair minor damage and cut off blood-flow to wounded areas, the Th’on Kxonthr is the pinnacle of protection on the battlefield. Normally painted in either a solid red or a white and red combination to embody the Republic colors; the armor is the standard uniform for all combatants in the Citinian Republic.

Alien Biology Spoiler

The Citinian species, unbeknownst to the human race, is a biologically similar alien kind. Typically standing about 6’6” and weighing in at 85-90kg, a male Citinian is a larger than the average human, though his body and chemical/biological make-up is much like the human’s. A carbon-nitrogen life form that breathes nitrogen-oxygen blends and drinks liquid water, the Citinian species’ largest difference from the humans is its pale skin used to absorb more starlight, obtaining vital warmth in order to assist in the body’s digestive processes as the Citinian diet consists of nearly three times as many calories as a human’s. Darker eyes with large pupils react to movement more acutely than human eyes, making Citinians able to sense moving objects and see much better in dark places than their biologic-“cousins”. As a natural predator, Citinians have very fast reflexes and reaction times, and they are normally built very stalky.

The final two items on the list of differences between Citinians and Humans are:
1. Citinians are naturally, though it is not yet understood how by scientists, immortal to age. Able to live for millions of years if left untouched, the Citinian body can still die from damage, starvation, or other things, but not of age.
And…
2. The Citinian body has two hearts, each much larger than a human’s, allowing for more oxygen to be passed onto the bloodstream at much faster rates. This means Citinians are not able to handle oxygen levels that most humans would consider thin, yet still breathable, air.

No real issues to be worried about. He has seen much combat in South America and on Mars in wars between America and Russia, China, and even a conflict between the US and UK. Psychologically he is effective for combat, but some sociopathic tendencies and relapses from his eight years of active duty service experience are threatened when he is put under unnecessary stress. Personality__
Commander Moldovan is generally a quiet man, preferring his own company to the company of others. Evaluations have shown that he's an intelligent man and a skilled tactician, as evidenced by his personal library and his proficiency with the game of chess. He stays calm and collected under most pressure, and he treats his subordinates evenly, though he does have a tendency to show preferential treatment toward the crew of the TRSV Tesla (the carrier he commands). Though he demands excellence from those under his command, he demonstrates remarkable patience with those who are slow to come around.

When provoked, Moldovan rarely lets his anger control him, though this is not the case 100% of the time. He is known for holding the rare grudge, and can be immensely petty when he absolutely wants to be (see Incident Report 12062140-B and Incident Report 15112152-A for further details).

Commander Moldovan has a marked preference for heterosexual encounters, having come from a region where homosexuality is still viewed with what can be considered substanially less than "tolerance." He is currently single, but with the possibility of a mission beyond the asteriod belt coming up, he doesn't seem interested in forming any close inner-system bonds.

History__
Oleksy Moldovan was born in the Chernihiv province of Ukraine approximately fifteen years before it was absorbed into the Russian Federation following the Border War of 2133. Despite (or perhaps because of) the country's troubles at the time, Moldovan's parents did their best to breed him for excellence. They were lucky--young Oleksy turned out to be an intelligent lad, and though he didn't make many friends, he did manage to mature early and get an apprenticeship. Unfortunately, it didn't last... Ukraine attacked Belarus in order to secure resources, and the border war commenced. The Russian intervention left Oleksy swayed, and he abandoned his homeland shortly after the war ended to join the military.

His scores on the aptitude test alerted the St. Petersburg Aeronautical Academy to his presence, and they swept him up after he'd completed his basic training. The Academy groomed him to be an officer, and he graduated as a Junior Lieutenant in the Russian Navy. From there, he excelled in his military career, eventually becoming the commanding officer of the TRSV Tesla.

Military Service__
Commander Moldovan's military experience is all technically theoretical, his promotions coming from longevity, practical training, political and military connections, and proficiency in tactical and strategic maneuvering than actual combat scenarios. He received his commission early, and spent his years in between commission and command rotating between duties on different ships in the Terran fleet. After being trained for command and proving that he could handle himself quite expertly, received command of the TRSV Tesla, which he's managed to steadfastly hold on to.

He currently holds the rank of Captain 1st Rank (NATO Equivalent OF-6/OF-7)

The TSRV Tesla

The Tesla is a Da Vinci-class carrier. With a total length of 800 meters (running back to front) and a maximum width of 115 meters, the Tesla is a monster in her own right. She boasts fifteen decks, which run horizontally along her length, and has difficulty landing or docking at high speeds, due to sheer inertia.

The bridge is located in the front, isolated from the rest of the ship by a transport that runs to the main hangar and nothing else.

Edna Sykes (First Mate)
British-born, Lieutenant Commander Sykes is an able first mate. She's not conventionally attractive, which keeps Commaner Moldovan's attention focused elsewhere, and is completely capable of performing every duty assigned to her, as well as delivering swift and terrible retribution for any unprofessional duty suggested for her. She's on the short side, slim-but-muscular and flat-chested. She keeps her blonde hair cut short to keep it from being a hassle in null gravity.

Henri Descoteaux (Helmsman)
A French-Martian (his father was born in the Lorraine province of France, but Henri was born on Mars), Ensign Descoteaux is a skilled helmsman, having worked with his father's civilian shipping fleet since he was young. He is a thin young man with close-cropped brown hair and a forgettable face.

Robert Armand (Navigator)
Ensign Armand is a Parisan, and after quite a bit of training, one of the better navigators the Fleet has put out in awhile. He has a brain for mathematics and quick calculations, and works ably with ISAAC to plot both practical and theoretical courses. Armand is on the shorter side, but built strong. A trimmed moustache adorns his upper lip, and his blond hair is grown out as far as regulation allows, often worn in a part.

Werner Hoch (Communications Officer)
An enthusiastic young German, Oberleutnant Hoch is a master of languages, including radio-babble. He's almost as good at reading charts as Armand, and speaks several different languages, including English, German, Russian, and Chinese. Thanks to his gift with languages, Hoch is often called upon as a translator when one of the senior officers needs him. Hoch is only a bit taller than Armand, with dark hair and a thin, pointed face.

Wilhelm Klemper (Information Officer)
One of the few "moon-men" aboard the Tesla, Lieutenant Klemper is quite a bit taller than the rest of the crew, having grown up in the moon's low gravity. He is great with computers, and like Hoch, is good with languages, the lunar colonies frequently housing more than one nationality at a time. Klemper stands at around seven feet, by Sykes' guess, and keeps his head clean-shaven, adding to the impression that he is, indeed, a "moon-man."

Winnifred Speares (Flight Control Officer)
Winnie Speares is technically a civilian, called into service to serve as the Tesla's flight control officer. She supervises a crew of technicians whose sole purpose is to guide the multitude of ships that call the carrier home into the right docks and bays, a difficult and precise science that comes naturally to her. She has a lithe, athletic build, and her long brown hair is often worn up in a loose bun. In her time aboard the carrier, she's become quite adept at warding off Commander Moldovan's advances.

Benjamin Hutchins (Chief Medical Officer)
Lieutenant Hutchins served as an enlisted corpsman before going into advanced training. He currently resides as the Tesla's chief medical officer. He and his crew mostly deal with treating burns and collisions in null gravity. He's a large, personable, bald and black, and pleasant to be around.

Hod Nowak (Lead Engineer)
Hod Nowak is also a civilian, serving on the carrier in exchange for living quarters. He and his crew are able engineers, and keep the Tesla in working order. Hod's got a stocky build, and is completely bald, with a bushy brown beard and eyebrows.

Wesley Warburton (Chief Security Officer/Artillery Officer)
Gunnery Sergeant Warburton is a Marine's Marine, completely gung-ho and capable of staring holes into people's heads. He and his crew maintain the peace aboard the Tesla, as well as defending her from outside threats. Warburton serves a dual-role aboard the ship, overseeing her offensive capabilities as well as defending her. Though he didn't care for Moldovan at first, the Gunny's gotten over his mistrust and thinks highly of the commander... and the feeling is mutual. Warburton is fit and muscular, and wears his graying hair high and tight.

Riley Crews (Chief Supply Officer)
Staff Sergeant Crews is the man responsible for seeing that the Teslaremains well-stocked and well-supplied. He's a short, grubby man who knows how to find all of the right things right when you need them.

Vito Vicci (Crew Chief)
Vicci is an Italian civilian who serves as the maintenence crew chief, overseeing repairs to any and all ships docked within the Tesla's bays. He's a tough, no-nonsense invidivual who gets frustrated with shoddy work and slapdash repairs. He knows where to cut corners, though, and is a master of doing quality work with minimal supplies.

Because I have a habit of creating additional characters to breathe a bit more life into the story and make the experience a little more... organic, I'll list a brief description of other important characters I introduce here, to save space and make them easier to find.

Dr. Howard Kessler (Biologist)
Howard Kessler is a scientist whose chief interest lies in the theoretical pursuit of alien biology. Most of his work is dedicated to thinking up ways other lifeforms could exist within the galaxy and aiding in identifying new forms of life (most of which have been simple bacteria, much to his disappointment). Kessler is tall and thin, and has short, messy brown hair. He's myopic, and prefers to wear glasses rather than undergo surgery or wear contacts.

If all goes well with this RP, the creator of the Universe (I shall refer to him as "The Creator" and nothing more) and myself already have a sequel written up and ready to go. The sequel will advance our story 22 years into the future, when the humans fight another alien species in the "Eastern Veil War" of the Second Galactic Era (eii) year 16 or 2178 CE. The Creator has also showed interest in joining our chats to answer and questions when he has time, but he works a night shift at a convenience store in Pennsylvania, called Sheetz? No idea what that is, but it is apparently really busy, and he's supposedly about to be promoted to manager, blablabla... But if he does join our chats, his information is better at answering major canon questions than mine is.

But, yeah, as of right now, I am working on an IC as we have two CSs and a CS WIP as well as Corporal Lance's CS pending on him finishing the read through of the OP. That should be up by Sunday at the latest, or today if I find time.

Also, most Naval personnel will not have REAL combat experience, as the Terran Republic's Space Fleet has not encountered any alien species yet, so they have not been put to the test. This means, most of their training is practical, theoretical, and guess-work. They are trained to respond to human-like tactics, and may not be prepared for the brutal and/or distant techniques and philosophies of alien militaries that have not been discovered yet. While the ground forces might have a heavy combat experience record, their experience with alien tactics is also only theoretical and based off of human or human-like tactical philosophies.

Psychological Evaluation: Ricardo Javez Jr. has been deemed fit for active duty. Prior alcoholism does not seem to be an issue at this time. Has difficulty following orders from officers and senior enlisted personnel, but will listen more readily to NCO's and small unit leaders. Advise informing chain of command of this issue.
Personality: Javez is happy-go-lucky and a hard worker. Once he focuses on something, it's difficult to get him to stop. He's generally agreeable and befriends others easily as long as they act in a similar friendly manner. He loves to joke and goof off as long as the job gets done. He's a bit of an alpha male and can intimidate others at times, but most of the time he means well. Javez lives in the moment, existing for the here and now and loves nothing more than to have a good time, which can lead him into some trouble on occasion. He primarily hangs around good influences and acts in an amiable manner, but if you cross him it will come back to haunt you, and fairly soon at that. Javez has a strong belief in fairness and will always pay his dues just as he expects others to pay him back as well. As long as he's free to do the things that he loves and get his work done, Javez is a contented man.

Background: Born and raised on Luna, Javez was introduced to a multitude of different cultures early on in his life from the many people that flocked there. The son of a researcher, his mother was part of a science group whose goal was to expand the habitable environment in expectancy of a population boom as Earth's climate continued to degrade. As a portly little youth, Javez made many friends by generally being a funny smartass and cracking wise. He began to hang around with the wrong crowd in his tweens, which wasn't that hard to do. Honestly, Luna was kind of a dump. Everything was city and there was nothing to do. It was modernization done completely wrong; there was industry everywhere but everything was "vital to survival". There wasn't any fun to be had. When partnered with the various youths of engineers and scientists that were born on Luna, the only thing to do was to lounge around and make trouble. Luckily, Javez had good parental role models and strong morals, and was able to escape the middle school cliques unscathed with bad habits and bad experiences.

He began to lose his chubbiness in high school when he went out for football and turned his excess fat into muscle. He was an upstart offensive lineman for 3 years in a row, but education opportunities were scarce on Luna and you didn't get a scholarship unless you were the best. Needless to say, Javez sought other means to an education, something he saw as necessary to a happy life and successful career. Enter the Terran Marine Corps, which offered him the best of both worlds. He could earn money towards a college degree while simultaneously getting off the barren rock he'd called home for all of his life. He enlisted his senior year without a moment's hesitation and shipped out for training on Mars 2 months after graduating high school.

Javez enlisted as a combat engineer, a job he chose carefully. Getting paid to blow the shit out of something? Hell yeah! Of course, he found out that every side has two coins and had to learn the ins and outs of building something too, but that was just as well. For every 4 medical facilities you add new treatment wings to and handful of FOBs you build with a small crew, you get to flick a switch and make something spectacular crumble in a matter of seconds. That made the job worth the hard work. The fact that he was learning a trade was a bonus as well. Straight out of his MOS school Javez was thrown into 7th Battalion, 4th Marines, a forward deployed unit that happened to see a lot of action. A new face on the TSRV Croatoa, the majority of Javez's first 2 years of service was either setting up FOBs for officers in fancy tents or patching the hull of the ship. Often while it was under fire. The TSRV Croatoa saw a grand total of 16 skirmishes while Javez was on board, and he had the very important job of making sure everyone didn't keel over from asphyxiation or get sucked into space by welding the ship back together, and it wasn't an easy task when someone else is trying to ram their own fighter into the hole one of their buddies just made. On more than one occasion Javez was almost killed by sudden pressure changes or thrown into deep space but managed to survive with minor injuries or simple vacuum sickness every time. Friends with so many grunts, Javez began to spend his time doing what they did for fun: drinking. This was the beginning of a multi-year long addiction.

After his first 2 years at 4th Marines, he was PCSed to 8th Marine Expeditionary Force, stationed on Red Island, Libra. His time there was spent 1 of 2 ways. He was either at Headquarters doing general maintenance and building projects like constructing the T.H. Wilson Mess Hall or adding wings to the dental clinic, or he was forward deployed to the asteroid belt in combat of mining pirates. He managed a small taste of combat in the asteroid belt, his leaders employing his expertise to fight smarter in the mines by caving in essential exits to prevent enemy retreat while simultaneously using that knowledge to save trapped mine workers. Around a year and a few months at VIII MEF, then Corp. Javez was demoted to Platoon Corp. after a string of unexcused absences related to drinking problems. He was forced by command to make weekly SACO visits and has been sober ever since, but the belligerence towards officers never faded. When his term of service was up, Javez enjoyed being a combat engineer so much that he enlisted a second time, this time with the 16th Combat Engineer Battalion.
