Angels in Aurelia

Aurelia, Louisiana has seen much better days. Considering it was completely decimated by the BP oil spill a few years ago, that might say something about the state of the small town. Just over ten-thousand people call Aurelia home- and that number is shrinking every year.

In recent years the local flora and fauna have been suffering from strange maladies that have gone unexplained for almost a year now. Nothing like this has ever happened in Aurelia. The closest event to come near to this was almost fifteen years ago, the night a bright blue meteor fell from the sky with a flash as bright as a sunrise and the roar of a volcano (though no crater or meteor was ever found and the only video evidence was a terribly recorded VHS tape). But almost overnight since the end of winter three years ago, dark springs of viscous oil began to bubble up from the swamp marshes and beneath the sands of the ocean beaches. Those fish schools which haven't fled are slowly killed by the dark substance.

The oil companies descended on the town looking for damage control and drilling opportunities, only to discover that the substance was not oil as we knew it. All that oil money then picked up and left with the fishers, the farmers, the loggers, and the backwoods citizens. Tourism is gone and the town will soon exist only as a blip on a map.

To those that remain on that blip, life has just been shattered. For the longest time the substance was found only in the wilds and the population, though disheartened, was safe.

Now the substance has found its way through the steel pipes of peoples homes. Those who drink the substance quickly choke and collapse unconscious- never to wake (so far) from a dreamless sleep. Those who bathe in it are riddled with cold second degree burns and soon suffer the same fate of those who drink the substance. But some, a chosen few, suffer... other effects. Their minds are not quite the same, and their actions- you can't believe that they are somehow in control of themselves. They see the world through different eyes, are driven by different desires, and they seem to know not what they do.

Someone close to you has suffered the unthinkable, something which has happened to only a handful of townsfolk so far. And so you're faced with a choice- pack up and leave to live with a distant relative whom you know little about and like even less. Or you can stay. Stay and heed the words of an odd, strange being who you meet after school. A stranger who raises no alarms of danger, but is definitely more than he or she sees.

A stranger who might, with your help, discover the source of the black springs...

The Rules

1.) Every member of this RP must play as a human AND as an angel. Yes, two characters are required. Why? Because your angel will be paired with another writer's human. You are absolutely free to set up your pairings with another writer here or in the OOC thread. The purpose of this is to not only create a diverse cast, but to encourage collaboration between everyone and to keep the plot moving if anyone needs to take time off for whatever reason.

Humans should all be around 16.

2.) The powers of angels are not unlimited. Until the human you are paired with accepts a metaphysical bond, they are the only person that can see/interact with the angels in the physical world. And once bonded, you cannot walk into a hospital and heal everyone in the ICU just because you want to. When dealing with demons, you get the fun stuff- flaming swords, ethereal wings, energy beams, all that jazz. When dealing with humans, you are almost completely human. Basically, if the miracle is something that could potentially happen without an angel's intervention, your angel can force it to happen but will be magically drained afterward (like calling down a lightning bolt during a storm).

3.) Humans should be fleshed out, flawed, and believable characters. The whole reason the angels are being assigned to our humans is that they are on the more vulnerable and troubled end of things (dealing with grief, drugs, love lost, ostracized, gay, etc.), but aren't so beat up that they roll over and give up at the first sign of trouble. The same goes for angels- feel free to make them former humans with tragic or triumphant pasts.

4.) This is NOT going to become a theology thread! Where the Angels and demons come from is going to be pretty neutral (Angels serve the Powers That Be, the Big Guy/Gal; Demons serve the Dark One, The Unnamed, the Fallen). The angels should be as diverse as the humans- if some think they serve a female deity while others think it's male, by all means, write that way. In summary: NO PREACHING PLEASE, JUST WRITING!

5.) To show that you've read the rules, you must submit a short post of 2-4 paragraphs with your character sheets, showing your angel arriving at Aurelia while your teenager is out in the night, reflecting on the damage that has been done to their family/friends/loved ones by the black sludge (Example: My human will begin at a rave, trying to lose the memory of how he's been affected in drugs, drink and dancing).

Sounds good, Inked! And as it looks like this has sufficient interest, I'll transfer this over to OOC before sunset. Thos of you who took part in "Angels in Arcadia" will be more than welcome to transfer your angels over to this thread if you like. I plan to do so for Parael for continuity's sake.

That's cool, though of course Ivy will need to be adjusted to fit the new background/area. The stories are in the same universe and Aurelia takes place after Arcadia.
