The way I see it in my head btw, is that the reason Robert is late back is because the local fuel station was deserted, open, but deserted, no pumps on, no attendants, no one, just unlocked and empty. So you had to go further to a fuel station in the nearest town.
I figure it sets the tone for the whole, "civilisation slowly starts disappearing" thing!

NOTE TIMES TAKEN TO TRAVEL as i did in my post
then I was figuring out how much Robert's transaction would cost and using this I figured out two gas bottles would cost £36...making £72
then i figured out how much diesel i had put into the canisters (I rounded the litres up to ten as there were two 1gallon canisters and rounded cost of diesel to £1.50 per litre) making £15
making a total of £87
