The best thing you can do as a parent is being both stern and loving. Know her limits, know yours and make her understand them. Do things you both enjoy, share things you love with her. Bonding is important. Make her feel like she can do anything because you're there to support her though anything.

How old is your kid again? 7? Ok. The fact that you managed to raise a kid since you were.. 14 and managing to bring her up with that in mind lends me to believe you are not quite as bad as you may think. Parents sharing their intersts with kids, aslong as they arent you know, directly harmfull to the kid is not a bad thing. Its a natural frame of reference for the kid. YEs she may grow up with nerdy interests, but if you make sure she knows there are other options and that she can do anything she wants (within reasonable boundries obviusly) she will be fine. She looked like real darling inthe pick by the way, bundle of happyness. If your kid has that kind of smile, then you are doing something right.

And as jorick said, just make sure she grows up to be a good person. Make sure to empower your kids, and keep their ambitions and motivation up.

I suggest making sure she gets her share of exercise along with the "nerd hobbies" as the risk of getting your kids to hooked on TV and computers is that they do not get enough exercise, end up with obesity and diabetes.

There wasn't too much in the first post to judge your parenting on but if you are worried about being away a lot I work on the road a lot. While I'm not a parent, plenty of the people I work with are. And seeing them with their kids, it's obvious to me that it is entirely possible to be a great parent in that situation. Keeping in contact somehow when you can while are gone and the time you spend with them while you are home is important, but it's like being gone makes you a bad parent.

As long as your daughter doesen't grow up into a selfish little ****, then you'll be in the top 90% of all parents (at least in the UK. dear god)

Seriously, you are lucky you don't have to live next door to THE WORST PARENTS EVER. I've had them arrested 3 times for disturbing the peace. I've knocked on their door in the middle of the night, extremely pissed off and tired warning them if they don't shut their baby the hell up I will call Social Services.
After the 10th time they got the message and either died or moved out.
Completely quiet. Not a noise. >: D and yes i know i'm a terrible person.

(that said though, junk food (no nutrition, empty calories) + no exercise is a death sentence. i am pretty much 90% vegetarian simply because it's cheaper, and because it's cheaper i walk 2 miles there and back to get to the tiny ass Lidl down the road. You will be surprised at the amount of fat and lazy people living in my street. Disgusts me that half of them aren't doing anything about it (One or two are, and they are the slightly better sort.)
