Would you still eat if you didn't have to?

You might not have to eat ever again. This could solve the problems with world hunger and obesity.

A man named Rob Rhinehart hypothesized that the body doesn't need food. It just needs the chemicals and elements it contains.

Here is his blog where he lists every ingredient he uses and his results. Not all of these ingredients are readily available, but apparently he'll send you a batch for free if you promise to do some testing along with it?

Like with most meal replacements, if you decide to partake in his experiment, I suggest you only do it for a short time and under the guidance of a nutritionist. Never change your diet extremely without consulting a doctor first. I just now found this blog tonight, and I haven't done much other research on it.

Personally I feel like it's a bit shady, I get the "too-good-to-be-true" vibe from it. Also, if you're testing with his batch, well... He has the ingredients measured out to fit his own needs, not yours. But perhaps if you do a week of it and give him your results, then he could alter your batch specifically? I'm not quite sure how that works. This is what he said on that matter:

So…I'll just ship you some of my batch. If you are willing to consume exclusively soylent, and get a CBC, chem panel, and lipid blood test before and after the week and share your results with me it's on the house. Bonus points for getting a psych evaluation before and after. The brain is an organ. I can ship it worldwide but it would be nice if you were in San Francisco so we can meet in person.
I'm so tired, why did I stumble across this at 4 in the morning. -_-

Here is an interview done with him.

Looks decent, eh? He says Soylent doesn't taste bad, but is sweet. And his skin looks nicer and he feels a lot better.

Before anyone starts ranting about how burgers taste so good and they crave one every day... Hunger and cravings are because not all of your needs are being met. If you lack iron, you're going to crave red meat.

SOOOOO lets say sometime in the future, we have ourselves a perfected batch of this beverage that meets your every need and does not make you sick. You only have to drink one or two a day and all your needs are met, you won't feel hungry, and eating out could just be a thing of the past. Or a social thing. Whatever. Would you change your diet to this much more efficient one, that will improve your health enormously?

I'd still eat. Food tastes good, it is something I enjoy. I would most likely, eat less and spend more time on each meal to make it extra special

Eating is an enjoyment of its own. Heck, if I had those Soylent stuff, it might leads me to eating more junk food.

If I never got hungry, I wouldn't eat often but I would have eating binges when I did. As long as it didn't hurt to do so.

I prolly would adapt in part, but I like cooking and a good dinner. Sure there's taste, but there's also the satisfaction of creating something, appreciation of aroma and texture, etc. Food is both cultural and social, and people on exclusive shake diets make fucking awful dinnerguests. Also balanced isn't always what you need.

EDIT: Also your explanation of hunger is wrong.

Would I do it if the option became viable? Sure. I can technically do it now, except that it's too expensive.

Would I do it with his set-up? No. His macros are too far skewed for my tastes, and the amount of sodium in his drink - although the same amount recommended by the FDA - is way too high to be healthy in the long term, for me.

That aside, it wouldn't work for me anyways because it's designed for someone who's sedentary and wouldn't need higher dietary intakes of things like saturated fat, cholesterol, protein like an athlete would. My diet is more efficient in that regard, and it suits me just fine. If someone finds a way to take the same macros and micros and put them into liquid form, then I'll switch to that.

I would probably still cook dinners and eat socially and during holidays, but I find this idea interesting. It would also have to have different flavours because there's no way I would go my whole life consuming the exact same thing.

This could solve a lot of emergency and military logistical issues.

Yep - our body is still mechanically designed to take solids and liquids, though I would implement this kind of form of eating somewhere in there, typically the morning.....if it wasn't called soylent, or had soy extract of any kind.

Without a doubt, I'd still eat. I eat even when I'm not hungry, snacking on foods that just taste good.
