Homebrew rules Robotech game: Military spec ops theme & Grim/Dark style
Robotech: The Ashes of Earth
This is my twist on Robotech The Shadow Chronicles. The game will feature homebrew rules and a military spec ops group.
The timeline and story pretty much follows the canon one (with the exception of the masters only being here for a year, come on!) I'll post an updated story line if interest is great enough and this evolves into a game. The story diverges shortly before the battle for Reflex Point.
No one is certain why the REF's Sentinel allies (other than the Haydonites) didn't participate in the Earth Liberation fleet. Rumors circulate of course. Some say they were asked to stay out of it by Admiral Hunter because he was concerned with alarming Earth with yet more aliens, of course with the SDF-3 missing, no one can confirm this. Others say the Sentinels themselves stayed out of it, whether form the same altruistic reason or because they weren't in any position to help being busy rebuilding their own worlds. Yet others say they stayed didn't participate for more nefarious reasons. Whatever the cause, they were not there for the devastating battle that took place.
The Human fleet moved into place to assault Reflex Point and retake Earth from the Invid. The Invid of course launched a massive counter assault. During the ensuing battle, the Haydonites sprung their trap. All the Shadow Technology started to fail in some degree or another. Some Shadow fighters just lost their cloaking mechanisms others completely stopped functioning, stranding the pilots in the middle of the largest battle mankind had ever taken part in. All the Syncro-Cannons self destructed taking whatever they were in with them. But the effects were felt
all across the fleet, some ships that didn't even have any Haydonite technology had some sort of computer virus take control of them. Those ships quickly turned their weapons on the REF fleet. The battle was turning quickly and horribly against the REF, defeat looked certain.
General Reinhardt, the operational commander of the fleet with the SDF-3 and it's escorts missing, was in a panic. The REF fleet was suffering horrible losses, but was winning the battle before the Haydonites sprung their trap. As chaos reigned another fleet emerged, a Haydonite fleet. They immediately attacked both the Invid and the REF, turning an already horrid battle into something beyond comprehension. To General Reinhardt death and defeat were certain at this point. It was just a matter of who would be in control of Earth and what the final fate of any surviving Humans would be. Sitting in his command chair and knowing all was lost, he could do nothing until the Damage Control Officer spoke up. "Sir, we've regained use of the the Neutron-S missiles." Knowing the ramifications of what he was about to do, the General walked over to Fire Control, and took over that position, launching all the Neutron-S missiles on board.
The Haydonite fleet immediately fled and space folded out of Earth orbit to who knows where. The Invid counter-assault, the rogue REF ships, and the Earth itself took the brunt of the salvo. After the detonation of the missiles, all that was left of the Invid fleet was but a smattering which immediately reformed and vanished, fleeing to who knows where. Twenty percent of the Earth was devastated and only ten percent of the REF fleet that entered the battle still lived and none of those ships were undamaged. General Reinhardt walked past the shocked crew back to his
command chair. Looking over to the Captain of the ship he said, "You're in charge now. Take care of Earth, and let them know I did the only thing I could think of to save some." He then pulled out his sidearm and committed suicide.
The battered REF fleet landed in the Great Plains area of North America. Now a blooming area of Flower of Life, it seemed relatively untouched and a place to regroup and take in all that had happened. Were that the case for the weary soldiers of the REF. Within a day of landing they discovered the hard way that not all the Invid had fled Earth. Digging in and trying to establish a base, the engineers found an active Invid Hive. The ensuing battle was relatively one sided and the REF prevailed, but now they realized that the Earth was still not free and clear. After clearing out the hive the REF survivors established a base, intending this the just be a temporary action, this ended up becoming the home of the new RMF (Robotech Military Forces) and the capital of one of the factions to vie for control of the earth. Not everyone was happy with former REF. Many felt abandoned by the REF and still more would never forgive them for the devastation caused be the unleashing of the Neutron-S missiles. Remnants of the EBSIS, Veterans of the Southern Cross Army that have forged there own kingdom, and other smaller emerging powers also make plays to rule the Earth. After almost a year back on Earth, the newly christened RMF looks to be one of the powers involved in a new world war. Then a fleet appears above the Earth.
The Sentinel races have come to Earth. Broadcasting an announcement that the Earth is too fragmented and damaged to defend itself, the Sentinels have decided to place the Earth under their protection as it is likely the Invid will return and the Earth poses a danger to the entire galaxy if left undefended. While not having a large fleet themselves, the Sentinel Council has enough weapons and manpower to overcome any organized resistance. The Sentinel Council then make contact with the RMF and informs them that they will now be working for the Sentinel Council. Most
of the forces that oppose the idea of Sentinel rule immediately go underground, realizing the futility of fighting a head to head battle with the Councils numerically superior forces. Being used to this sort of combat from years of Invid occupation, whole armies practically disappear overnight only to reappear as smaller, more mobile units fighting a guerrilla campaign against the Sentinels. Pacifying the Earth proves to be a difficult task for the Sentinel Council. Even in the remnants of the rechristened REF there are dissenters against the Sentinel rule, both overt and covert. And even in the home of the RMF, the newly christened Sentinel City, there are guerrilla actions that take place. It seems that not even all the old REF members think that the Sentinel Council is being completely forthwith and altruistic in their motives. Though evidence exists that the Masters are still active in the galaxy, ongoing raids by Zentradi pirates, the betrayal of the Haydonites, and the knowledge that the Invid survivors that fled the battle of Reflex Point could return at any time, the Sentinel Council is fiercely opposed on all fronts.
The Sentinel Council does prove to be if not benevolent, at least benign overlords. They don't enforce the rule harshly and seem to take any action against the people of Earth unless attacked first. They even let known violent and militaristic groups function until they attack Sentinel or Allied forces or equipment. Until the events that took place during the response to a Haydonite reconnaissance force. Planet wide, forces were scrambled in response to the Haydonite recon fleet and while the RMF and Sentinel units were away, guerrilla units across the globe seized their chance and raided, looted, and destroyed what they could. The Sentinel Council was not pleased. While their forces were off
defending the Earth, rebels and insurgents looted and destroyed the bases and supplies of the very people that were protecting them. Something obviously had to be done to stabilize this situation.
The Sentinel Council agrees to measures to combat the rampant dissent and rebellion along with the guerrilla forces opposing their guardianship of Earth. As the Sentinel and RMF forces grow in power thanks to the Robotech Factory in orbit that has finally been repaired, they start to actively seek out and destroy the insurgents. Taking this proactive step to cement their rule over the Earth helps the situation in some ways, while also strengthening the resolve of the guerrillas and giving pause to all on the thoughts of the benevolence of the Sentinel government. Adding fuel to the fire, harvesting of Flower of Life and production of protoculture power units begins in earnest. This stirs up more of the hidden Invid hives giving the Sentinel government more problems.
Dealing with the growing rebellions that are just digging in deeper and hiding better in response to the now proactive stance of the Sentinels along with the new activity in Subterranean Invid hives proves too much distraction for the Sentinel Council. A Haydonite strike force folded into the Sol system and using Shadow technology, stealthily approached Earth. Successfully destroying the newly operational Robotech Factory and performing orbital bombardment of some of the major Sentinel bases on Earth before fleeing the system.
The Sentinel Council is in disarray, proposals from one end of the spectrum to the other are fielded, but none are passed. There seems to be no good plan for dealing with the insanity they have found themselves in the middle of. They can't withdrawal as it would only leave the Earth ripe for invasion and very few agree with some of the more totalitarian "solutions" put forth. The Sentinel Council has been letting Human colonies the REF founded join them though. Now that some Humans are actually on the council, even though they are not from Earth, the Sentinel Government hopes that this will appease the groups opposing them. Once this news is announced, those hopes of the Sentinels are dashed. While it does pacify a few groups, it only seems to strengthen and anger others. Beset from all sides, the Sentinels and their RMF allies scramble to contain the situations at hand. More forces are requested from both the mainstream Sentinel and Human colonies, though few are sent. Another Robotech factory is begged for, whilst repairs are worked at a feverish pace on the heavily damaged Factory. The new Factory is denied, Earth command is told, because of the volatility of the situation with Earth. The Sentinel's government will have to make do with what they have and what they are given. Moral is at an all time low.
Meanwhile, the Regis monitors the events on Earth through the hive brains she left behind and her human form Invid. She has learned much about the Humans, though she learned it too late to recover her first occupation of Earth. It seemed that there was more to the Humans than she had originally thought. The Regis fomented plans to retake Earth and the only source of food for her people. It would require great change in her Invid, luckily they were nothing is not easily changed.
The surviving Masters, brewing in hate, monitored Earth's situation and built up their invasion forces. Though bad luck and bad decisions, they lost not only their empire, but even their lower castes and soldiers and even their homeworld to these upstart Humans. They plotted their new invasion, intent on harvesting all Flower of Life from the Earth then planned a complete sterilization of that hated world. They intended to wipe humanity from the face of the galaxy.
The Haydonites could not be more pleased. Everything was going exactly according to plan. They had successfully corrupted the navigation systems of the one set of people that had information about their homeworld and sent them off to battle the Ones That Shall Not Be Named. Doubtful that the SDF-3 would defeat them, but they would be able to weaken them. And the scenario on Earth couldn't have gone according to plan any better. The pieces of the great game were almost in place. The Haydonites would triumph over The Ones and would finally be free.
In the depths of space, a new menace approaches. One never seen before and unimaginable to the Humans, the Sentinels, or even the Masters or the Invid. A menace that was a danger to all...
My idea for the game itself: The characters will be highly trained Spec Ops soldiers. Using a lifepath type system. The characters will be a Spec Ops team that will go everywhere and face any threat the Sentinel Council and the RMF faces. They will have access to not only the latest equipment, but even (upon the character's request) be able to field test prototypes. This is intended to be a much grittier, much darker Robotech universe focusing on realistic military characters. I am a bit of a free form GM and reward (and prefer) characters with story behind them.
