    Star Wars: World Seeker

The shuttle wasn't as smooth of a ride as Davad would have liked. He was very grateful that he didn't get star sick, or this would not bode well for the next few months. He sat in silence across from his employer, who was chatting away amicably about this that and the other thing. Davad Sanaa wasn't paying much attention until the short, portly man pointed out the window.

"There it is! My new jewel..."

Davad followed his gaze eagerly. However he felt about the shuttle, a brand new, proper starship was something to be excited about. And he was not disappointed.
A great metal scaffolding partially obscured the Starsea Enterprises' World Seeker. The scaffolding was part of a titanic system of dozens of docks, many of them with ships docked in orbit for repairs or resupply. There was a holographic sign that must have been a hundred feet high, which read "Starsea Orbital Shipyard" in stylized orange letters. Davad tried to take in all of the ships. Almost every single one he recognized as Correllian made, but there was one or two he had never seen before. The World Seeker was by no means the largest, but Davad knew what was inside of it. It boasted an impressive and efficient modern engine, and easily the most advanced scanning equipment on any ship to date. There couldn't possibly be many ships better suited for the mission at hand than the one that Davad was about to take command of. Brom Starsea was justly proud.

The shuttle's pilot felt the need to chime in as well, "You won't see anything like that coming from Lantillian ship wrights!" Davad grimaced at the slight on his home world, but he knew Starsea's yes-man was right.
"Ah," Brom said, meaning to placate Davad, "But you won't find many officers like Davad Sanaa on Corellia. I've every faith in you, my boy. This is an exciting mission, I cannot tell you how proud I am to send this ship out. The crew is all decided, of course. They're waiting on the dock for you to take command."

    "You've assembled them already?"

"Yes yes! It's all taken care of. Cathan here will be your First Officer."

"Your pilot?" Davad turned from the window to frown at his employer. "I don't know any of this crew, who are they?"

"There'll be plenty of time to get to know them, Davad! You'll have months together, reaching out into the unknown! Bringing riches and glory to yourselves and your company!" Brom obviously thought this was the greatest arrangement ever made, but Davad was less than happy about how quickly things were moving. He had expected a few days to get used to the ship, and at least a pick of the men who would be going with him. It seemed Brom was just eager to show him out into space.

"When do you mean for us to depart?"

Brom checked his watch, "Three hours."

Davad followed Mr. Starsea into the airlock to find two men waiting for him. One was short and bespectacled, with an ugly haircut and an apparent tendency to avoid eye contact. The other was taller, and obviously much more engaging. Davad reached his hand out to this man, "Davad Sanaa," he introduced himself.

"This is your captain," Brom announced. "You already know Cathan Omistel. Davad, this is Aldric Sarto, he'll be your science consultant. He has degrees in physics and geology. He used to work for the CEC, but I was lucky enough to get my hands on him!" Brom seemed quite happy about that indeed.

"And this one," he gestured to the shorter man, "Is Melvin Skurry. He is a linguist, in case you encounter any previously unknown species."

"How do you do?" Davad extended a hand to him as well.

Aldric watched as Mr. Starsea approached Professor Skurry and himself with the man he was about to learn was his new supervisor and Captain of the World Seeker. Mr. Starsea introduced Cathan Omistel to the two over-educated gentlemen. Aldric looked at the man who was about the same size as Aldric and shook his hand firmly. Aldric smiled at his Captain and said, "It is a pleasure to meet you sir. I know we will have an exciting adventure. I am really looking forward to this trip."

Aldric had already set up his room, #10 across from the medical bay. He checked the medical supplies in the medical bay. Everything was squared away. He stored his own aid bag in a cupboard in that room as well, to be used if and when they would exit the ship. The one thing he was looking forward to was checking the computer files for data on known planets and suspected data on planets yet to be visited. The idea of being the first Corelian to take soil samples and to scan a planet's surface for topography and Geological constitution excited him immensely. He was ready to go and waited to board with the rest of the crew.
"Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." - Heraclitus

"Uh-hmm, yes, how do I do?" mused Professor Skurry aloud. He eyed the captain's outstretched hand before something clicked and, with a smile which exposed a crooked set of teeth, clasped it in is own. "I do very well, thank you! I say, your hands are very cold, very cold and dry if I do say so myself!" Realizing he was still shaking the captains hand, he let go and wiped the sweat of his palms on the hem of his plaid vest. "Uh, right, I'll be working to decode any alien languages we might encounter. I should add that I am very well-versed when it comes to cross-species interactions, yes very well-versed. It's a tight balance between talking like I would to any human --or any other known sentient species for that matter-- and mixing in different signals and techniques we've learned from observing their communication. Though that really just scratches the surface, a full synopsis of communication in a first contact scenario would take much longer to explain, yes much longer!"
My blog the Alternate History Inquirer. Give it a look; maybe you'll find a nice alternate history scenario to set your RPG in.
