    Time of War [OOC]

In an alternate world that bears an uncanny resemblance to Earth, there exists two superpowers; the Osean Federation and the Union of Yuktobanian Republics. Both are struggling for global dominance, and as a result of political tension, both are locked in a war with one another. Few factions have been able to avoid being dragged into the war and many have seen it's resources depleted and it's lands ravaged because of the war.

New technology and revolutionary tactics are being introduced for the first time, such as the widespread use of armored vehicles and the mass production of semi-automatic rifles, but the concept of Airborne infantry has only been considered and never actually put to the test. The Yuktobanians have passed the idea off as too far-fetched and even the Osean military is skeptical about the practical use of paratroopers. This is exactly why the Osean Federation has decided to field such a unit.

    Osean Airborne
The Osean Airborne is taking any volunteers crazy enough to join them, whether they be an experienced war veteran or a fresh soldier straight out of basic training. Foreign soldiers are also being introduced within the Airborne's ranks, for the success or failure of the Airborne will determine whether or not allied forces will be creating their own Airborne units.

Known foreign nations contributing recruits to the Airborne include..
    1) Kingdom of Sapi
    2) Democractic Federation of Wellows
    3) Republic of Ustio
    4) Republic of Emmeria
    5) Republic of Recta

Technology used by the Americans and British during the Second World War are available to the Osean Airborne. The M1A1 Thompson submachine gun, the M1 Garand, and the Bren gun are just a few classic examples of the firearms you can use. In addition, light Tetrarch tanks, anti-gun emplacements and heavy weapons will be dropped via glider. Heavy weapons range from mortars, heavy machine guns and portable hand-held anti-tank weapons such as the bazooka.

Operation: Blue Shield will be the first operation the Osean Airborne will be conducting since it's formation. This is the basic background behind the operation; the Emmerian Republic, an ally of the Federation, is quickly loosing ground to Yuktobanian-aligned forces. The Osean Airborne will be dropping ahead of an amphibious assault that could take pressure off the Emmerians and buy them time to regroup. Objectives will include the capture of enemy-occupied towns and cities, the destruction of enemy gun batteries that could hit Osean ground forces on the beaches and securing numerous strategic roads and routes vital to the push inland. Opposition and enemy troops will not actually be Yuktobanian soldiers but instead, members of the Estovakian military, who are well known for fielding large amounts of poorly equipped infantry to exhaust an unit's capabilities before sending forth armored forces to crush their enemy.

    Full name: Jackson Steel

    Rank: Sergeant
    Age: 28
    Gender: Male

Appearance: 5' 11" tall and weighs 190 Lbs. Sergeant Steel has short brown hair and steel blue eyes. He has fair complexion and may be in need of a shave if in the "field" for extended periods of time. Sergeant Steel is in decent shape, but unlike his DC counterpart, unable to jump buildings in a single bound or outrun a speeding bullet. [See Avatar for appearance]

Personality/Demeanor: Sergeant Steel is a professional soldier. He rarely smiles or jokes around with the men of his squad. he is all business and does things by the book. He isn't afraid to think outside the box and expects subordinates to do what they are told. Sergeant Steel has an affinity toward Cuban cigars.

Mission Occupation Specialty (MOS): 11B20 - Rifle Squad Leader

Service record: Jackson Steel was a member of his state's Army National Guard. When war started, his unit was activated for the war. He saw about three months of combat with his NG unit early in the war until he received a bullet wound to the shoulder. While recuperating in the hospital, Jackson heard about the Army looking for soldiers to jump out of an airplane to go into combat. Although, the act of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane was foreign to him, he was attracted to the extra $55 per month for jump pay. If nothing else, he could use the extra cash.

Shortly after discharge from the hospital, then Corporal Steel submitted an application to Airborne school and subsequent entry into the Osean Airborne Corps which initially consisted of both the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. He was accepted and conducted training with the same unit he would later serve with in combat. A week before their first jump, Jackson Steel was promoted to Sergeant and given command of his own rifle squad.

Background: Jackson was a Police Officer in his home town while simultaneously a member of the local Army National Guard unit. In School Jackson was a fairly decent student getting mostly a B average on academics, but excelling on the sports field. He played Football in the fall as a Defensive back and baseball in the spring as a 3rd baseman.

His father died of a heart attack when he was 16 and the young Jackson took it hard. He may have done better in school without the stress of dealing with the death of a parent. Although, the stress of his father's death only served to push him on the sports fields.

    Full name: John Rothenberg

    Rank: Corporal

    Age: 22

    Gender: Male

    Appearance:
    Spoiler

Personality/Demeanor: John is a hard-working soldier, and shows genuine interest and care for the members of his unit. He is willing to put himself in the line of fire to protect his allies, and although he much prefers to use his weapon to clear a moment of safety for somebody to reach a downed comrade, if he sees no other way he will rashly throw himself into enemy fire, guns blazing, to do whatever he can to save his teammates. He is also good at coming to reasonable compromise should any of his squad members have an argument.

Mission Occupation Specialty: Automatic Rifleman (BAR gunner)

Service record: John has served in combat for several years as an infantryman, recently qualifying as an expert with the BAR while his former unit was on rotation in less-active combat zones. He'd been told of the experimental airborne unit by his CO, who recommended he check it out, as John had always been the type of man to pull crazy stunts such as jump out of a plane behind enemy lines.

Before being rotated to his most recent location prior to joining the Airborne unit, John and his unit fought on the front lines of the war, suffering heavy casualties. His platoon lost nearly 40% of its soldiers in their first few months of fighting, and Command struggled to replace the fallen men. Early in his career, John himself was Wounded In Action saving the lives of one of these men, who had to have his arm amputated due to infection. Since that battle, he has made sure to protect his comrades as best he can, in whatever way he can.

Background: John was the sun of a tavern owner and his wife, taught from a young age how to handle unruly people like the drunkards who so often visited the tavern and caused a scene. His father, Jeremiah, was known for his diplomatic skills, as he had worked for the Federal government as secretary to one of their chief diplomats prior to John's birth. Unremarkable in nearly every other way, Jeremiah simply taught his son how to lead a decent life, and how to be relatively successful. Fame, glory and fortune were never a goal for the Rothenbergs. Honor, however, was an important virtue.

When war broke out, John and his father agreed that he should enlist to fight, and perhaps save some poor soul from being drafted. They understood that in a small, special way, every last soldier did count, even if it took more than one man to win a war.

    Hope that's good!

I posted my character along with a depiction of what a (US) Airborne squad looked like. As a note, there were no specialist ranks in the Army in the 1940s. That rank comes into use in the 1960s.

Right, my mistake then, I was thinking of modern-day ranks instead of ranks back in the days of Jerry. Anywho, character accepted!

I'll set up my own character soon, and I'll go ahead and start the IC when tear's character is up. Anyone who joins late(after the first set of posting) can just say they missed the drop zone or couldn't find any of us. Something along those lines.

Hay Gunther. Didn't Airborne units have a medic/Corpsman attached? Or am I thinking modern?
I devour your arctic settlements, and eat all of the settlers. So be wise, and leave this place.

And now for something, completely different

Line medics are assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) Medical Platoon at the Battalion level. They are then attached to Rifle Companies to provide immediate medical attention to the soldiers in the platoons. There is one line medic assigned to each rifle platoon. A company has three platoons. So, yes you would find a line medic in a rifle platoon. He usually hangs out in a safe spot with the Platoon Sergeant who held the rank of Staff Sergeant during WWII. US Army uses Sergeant First Class for Platoon Sergeants today.
