Scientists galore- A post-apocalyptic World [High casual]

The end of the modern era:
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
“What the HELL IS GOING ON?!” Dr Clairmonte called disgustedly to her assistants.
“I believe that is the alarm.” Daniel peaked his head out from his cubicle, eyebrows raised.
“No shit Sherlock!” She replied uneasily. This most likely wasn’t a scheduled run through. She would have been informed. “Alright, secure only that which absolutely needs it. Everything else can be left as is. Hurry now!” She said as her two assistants went scrambling, wide eyed, only know realizing that it was unlikely to be a false alarm.

“ALL NUCLEAR WEAPON’S WILL BE DETONATING IN 3 MINUTES” came over the speaker system, a robotic voice sounding them.
“Oh Holy Mother of us all” Dr Clairemonte whispered, paling dramatically, her hands gripping the back of her rolling office chair, turning white from the tight grip. “Doctor? What’s going on? Why are the nuclear weapons being detonated? Where are they being detonated?” Daniel asked frantically, Lucille beside him; faces frightened. She looked at them, her own fright disappearing. They were so young. They were her responsibility. “I have no idea, but follow me, quickly, we only have about two minutes, no one should be watching us. I can only thank my good graces that we were put so far below ground despite my protests.” She took them to the back of her lab where she slipped her ID card through the swiper, revealing a set of stairs going even further down under ground. “Quick, quick.” She urged them through, closing the door behind her. “We should be there in less than a minute if we hurry,” she said calmly.
True to her word, they came across a heavy set metal door. She scanned her ID card again, the door opening easily on oiled hinges. “Alright go as far as you can as fast as you can. There will be many more doors like this one.” Dr Clairemonte handed Daniel her ID card. Use this, and make sure you close and lock the doors behind you. Locking them will ensure your continued safety.” She handed them a small phone. “If this is a false alarm, I’ll call you.” With that, she pushed them through the door without a good bye and locked it from her side using her code.
She ran back upstairs finding the door she had walked through what seemed like eons ago, but was in fact only a minute. She had about a minute to gather herself, to get herself ready to either got to her death, or to go speak with the CEO about the safety of keeping everything war related in a computer system. No more thoughts crossed her mind as thirty seconds early, all nuclear weapons detonated.

    Present day:
“Lucille, hurry up would you? We need to get this piss-poor lot back to camp. Evalin will be pleased as punch that we found her some more initiates.” Daniel grinned cheekily at the woman behind him, knowing that he’d be avoiding Evalin’s less fatal poisons for the next week.
“You really shouldn’t expect her to keep training the initiates, they’re all terrified of her, and she hates it, you know,” Lucille sighed wearily. She looked mournfully at the horizon, knowing that she was one of the luckiest on the planet right then even though she had been one of two people to be so close to the nuclear blast, and yet to have survived it. Survived it, and not mutated that was. The other was standing in front of her, playing Devil’s Advocate with Evalin and her sanity. “That poor, poor woman,” she muttered in anxiety, also fearing her somewhat, despite knowing that as the leader of the resistance, most people respected her and Daniel, and as such, wouldn’t hurt her. But as one of the rebels assassins, Evalin scared her. Mostly for her own physical safety, but also that of her sanity. She thought that Evalin took risks with Evalin’s life that she shouldn’t have. Lucille shook her head, clearing it of such musings. What was and is done, is done, she couldn’t change it even if she wanted. She gave the initiates a stern look that had them moving forward faster, eager to rest and eat.The end of the modern era:

A truck driver was driving along on the freeway. A sign comes up that reads, " Low Bridge Ahead."
Before he knows it, the bridge is right ahead of him and he gets stuck under the bridge.
Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up.
The cop gets out of his car and walk s to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says,
    "Got stuck, huh?"
The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas.

Evalin Reikov stared at the ceiling distractedly and sighed. It had been a long day sitting in the labs doing nothing. She had been required to stay overnight, and rather than cause a fuss and draw attention to herself, she had agreed that doing a triple shift would be best. She rubbed at her tired eyes and swivelled on her chair at the sudden sound of the doors whooshing open. “Level three, lab four,” said the lab assistant lazily. Evalin thought she spied a hint of green in the assistants skin tone, but dismissed it abruptly as she stalked past, the scarf around her throat trailing out behind her like a banner in a race. She pulled on it roughly as the double doors started closing behind her. Taking a left, she ventured further down the building, stopping only on occasion to enter codes that would allow her access into the lower vaults of the building.

She stopped at a bright yellow door, and took a deep breath to settle her tiredness, and opened the door abruptly, startling the doctor inside. She stifled her smile of pleasure at having caught the doctor off guard and raised her eyebrows. “What have you got for me doctor?” She asked, authoritively, creasing any concerns into nothing in doing so. The doctor blinked twice, “Oh not much at this point in time. I just had a lab rat escape about 15 minutes ago. If you could hunt it down?” she sighed, shrugging one shoulder, letting the doctor know he could lay it on her. “Current Species: Unidentified. Previous species: Spider monkey.” She shuddered, revolted. She had seen pictures of monkeys, and she saw spiders every day. It couldn’t get any worse, surely. It could. “4 feet tall, average monkey intelligence, about that of a simple human. Is able to open doors, and handle simple weapons, such as knives.” She rubbed her forehead and exasperation. Damn scientists. This was the seventh experiment today she’d had to run down. Couldn’t keep the damn cages locked tight.

She rolled her eyes and stepped out of the lab and noticed a few more lab assistants with strange tints of colour to their skin. Bloody freaks, she cursed inwardly. She jogged downstairs, stopping in to poke her head quickly into her friend and comrades office. She called out softly, “Zaafir?” She waited for 30 seconds before deciding he wasn’t in and closed the door behind her. He was probably out to lunch, like she should be. She finished taking the stairs and opened the buildings front doors easily, the sunlight bling her fractionally for a few seconds. Once her eyesight had cleared, she started jogging, finding the monkey tracks in the sandy plains easily enough.

It would only be a short five minuets or so until she would finder herself being led behind a crumbling wall, a ruin of some home no doubt. As she turned the corner she would hear the faint sound of small gears and clicking noises. These noises only happened around one man, Zaafir, her partner. His main set of massive arms were holding a small figure by its much smaller arms. His smaller, secondary set of arms were holding the smaller figure's feet. On his back was his trusty chem thrower. The bottom of his military coat waved as the small breeze washed over the fabric. He turned his head slightly to see what was behind him as he heard quick foot steps, he smirked as he saw it was Evalin. "Evalin!." he shoulded with that smirk still on his face as he turned, which revealed he was holding the mutated spider monkey by its limbs, the small creature flailing about from its captor. "Good to see you, did you know the new batch of experiments are rather quick?" He asked her as he bashed the monkey on the head, knocking it out cold...or killing it, he was sure. He held the body at level with his secondary set of arms, leaving his larger, main arms free to use.

She spluttered as she saw that her suspicions were correct. When she had heard the gears and clicking sounds she had been doubtful it had been her partner, but upon seeing him, she was confounded and utterly pissed off at him. She had been running around containing and eliminating all of these damned experiments because of him?

She growled at him, her eyes narrowing, but she didn't even so much as twitch a muscle more. She knew she could wrestle the man, he was too much metal, not enough human for her to pulp and bloody. She didn't want to permanently harm him, but by the gods she could have broken a few of his bones. "You are the reason I've had to hunt down so many escaped experiments, both today and last night, and the entire month?!" She cursed softly at him. "I've had to do a triple shift because of this nonsense!" She roared. "I have not slept in over 36 hours, and I've been running around like one of those damn experiments gone wrong in that entire time!" She gasped in a breath, controlling her anger. "I'm sure I'm not the only assassin they've got on overtime either," She muttered. She hadn't seen one of the others that she usually did assignments with.

She turned her back, closing her eyes and straightening her back. "You know why I'm here, I don't care how fast the damn thing is, I need to return it, or I very well could lose my status within the labs. 'A woman assassin,' they say, 'what good can she do?' No I will not have my reputation tarnished because you were releasing the experiments for your own experimentation. She motioned for the monkey, not wanting to get close to either set of arms. They sort of freaked her out, even now.

"Hand over the monkey Zaafir." She said softly, not really sure he would give it to her.

Zaafir frowned, handing over the monkey to her. "You know they don't let me experiment on the subjects, its the only way i could." He explained as he rummaged in one of the few leather pouches on his waist. He held up a small vial filled with a dingy blue liquid. "How else am I to test my own cures if the labs won't let me?" He ask as he slipped the vial back into it's pouch. He then crossed all four of his arms and sighed, looking down at her. "Come now, don't let your pride get in the way of your meals, its not good for you." He said as he started to walk back to the labs. "Lets get back, the others, they uh, they're not worth trying to catch anymore." He said as he scratched the back of his head and quickly turned around. "Quickly now, I'll treat you to a double ration meal, my treat." He said with a thumbs up given by his bottom left hand. As he began to walk away, he felt a sharp pain in his left eye, where the socket for his medication is. "And a visit to the doctors, for another scolding and medicine." He explained as every time he went in for more medication for his augments, he almost got an ear full for the very thing he goes in for.

((I wrote this on the way to and from uni, so don't mind me if it seems a little off >.<))

Evalin calmed down as he handed the monkey back to her. She checked its vital signs, not relieved to find that Zaafir had only knocked it unconscious, not killed it. while the scientists would be relieved to have at least one of their experiments back alive, she didn't know if she could pull it off viably.

She sighed. "You know, if you have to experiment on the lab rats, do it a bit more discretely, like one or two, not whole batches." She frowned. "or I'm more than willing to hunt down some for your use at base. I've had to bring back live ones once or twice you know." At that point, she had zoned out of the conversation, handling the revnant spider monkey in her hands, her thoughts on tracking down and bringing revnants back alive to base camp. She was sure she could convince Daniel the risk of keeping them caged was worth it, if she could just get a full nights sleep four nights in a week.

She walked beside Zaafir unconciosly and realized he had stopped talking and she hadn't been listening. "Huh?" She asked intelligently, looking up a little dazedly at her partner. She also realized that she had been hugging the monkey tightly to her chest. "Errrr.... Are these revnant spoisonous and/or bitey?" She asked hesitantly, knowing that he'd probably know the answer already. She looked up at him inquisitively, appreciating once again that she had decided to look out for him.

"I'm sorry for yelling," She said softly. "I'm just tired," she continued. "For such an energetic job, I sleep so little it makes one grumpy, you know." She looked ahead, her pride a hard pit in the middle of her stomach. She rarely apologized because in her eyes, she was usually right, but her friendship with Zaafir was usually the only thing that kept her sane in a mad, mad world.

She slowed her pace, forcing him to stay with her while she waited for him to respond to her.

Zaafir looked at her as he sat down on large rock with a large sigh, his smaller set of arms messing around with the machinery of his body. "Oi, its fine." He told her. "The monkey does bite, but the nurotoxin was milked from him about two days ago, so it'll just hurt." He told her, not one to sugar coat most anything. He reached back into the same leather pocket, pulling out a clear liquid and uncovering his eye socket, where he then slides in the vial, opening towards the back of his skull and sliding the cover back down over his eye. He let out a long hiss of pain as the drug began to work, a pain killer it would seem as he started to look more relaxed. "That's better." He said with a nod, standing back up and following Evalin back to base. "Honestly though, no need to apologize." he told her, patting her on the back. "Lets just get this thing back in its cage, get some good eats in you, then a nap or two." He said this all with a smile on his face. He may put her though hell, but he always did take good care of her, at least care enough that she didn't need any fake body parts.

Evalin walked through the tents, her too small clothes making her skin itchy. She heard a faint whirring sound that had her turning in circles trying to figure out what it was. She finally caught which direction it was coming from and followed it to its owner. She blinked in surprise. It seemed to be coming from a normal, if somewhat tall human. She looked up at him, her smaller stature giving her the ability to hide from him easily. He didn't look that old. But you can't really tell age from the back, can you? The 17 year old asked herself mentally. She had been residing in the camp for several years now, working for both the scientists, and the rebels. It had only been recently that she had been put out of action, but she turned her mind away from that, and the fact that her clothes now no longer fit her anymore. Both the scientists and the rebels had been working for the last couple of days to get their teenage assassin some clothes that she could wear out for the hunt. She again turned her mind away from this, and focused on the man-machine in front of her. She had figured out, finally that it was definitely him that was whirring, and had decided that it was coming from his legs. They look unnaturally long for a human, and just didn't look right on the man.

She sat their in the shade of the tent using her skills to keep her hidden in plain sight, but she must have been doing something wrong because he turned around, and looked straight at her. Her face went pale and stricken, and she started backing away. She turned and ran, straight into Lucille. She looked up frightenedly at the woman, her face turning back to the man, she didn't want to become like him, so she ran, back to the safety of her tent and her various weapons.

Her memory jumped ahead a few years as her body turned restlessly, eyes rolling under her eyelids, her legs catching in Zaafirs sheets. Sweat dripped her brow as her mind subjected her to the memories of the past.

She'd heard that whirring again, this time as a woman in her early 20's. She'd faced down a lot more revnants, and been hunting down a lot more experiments. She touched the gorgeously made pistol for luck, and followed the sound once more. This time she came to an open tent. The man within it was much taller than last time and facing her too. She swallowed hard, and looked at him, feigning an interested smile. She could tell he'd had much more work done on him, he looked even more mechanical than the last time she had seen him. She licked her lips, and asked "May I come in?" she took his small nod as encouraging and entered the tent. "What can I do for you? The last time you saw me, or rather, I saw you, you ran away."

She blushed at the reminder, but stood fast. "I've heard about you, about the things that you create and design. And that I even have a few lovely weapons that you made..." She trailed off uncertainly, finally looking around at the lab that was Zaafirs tent. "Oh my... So many chemicals.." She moved into the very center of the tent, trying to stay as far away as possible from all of the chemicals, and yet not be rude to the host. "So I just wanted to come see what it is that you do.." As her voice trailed off, her mind and memories jumped again.

The screaming. She just wanted to shut it off. It was horrific. She closed her eyes tightly, and huddled against her bed, her bedroom door wide open. If she opened her eyes, she'd see the revnants tearing at her mother. It had only been luck that they hadn't seen the nine year old girl as of yet. And it was even luckier still that a man smashed through the window, sending glass everywhere and beheaded the revnant in a single movement. He'd turned around, sensing the younger life form, and that was when the other revnant jumped from the floor and took the mans eye out, causing the rest of the team to come in after him, and to take out the rest of the hostiles, and to secure the girl.

She thrashed, fighting the sheets and her scarf and protective clothing, gasping for breath. She felt a hand on her shoulder and she had her gun un-holstered and pointed before she even realized what she was doing, or before she had even woken up properly. She blinked and looked up. "Oh... Sorry" She put the gun away, falling back into the bed, eyes closing again.
