Background: A huge fantasy world where warfare and commerce takes place in the skies. Colossal airships rule the air, running on steam from coal engines, and boasting large cannon emplacements with which they the defend their holdings. Airships range in size from that of a sailboat to a mountain.
Amidst a dozen neutral trading nations, the omnipotent military forces of Disith and Barthos are clashing in a seemingly perpetual war.

Nations:

Disith: The Disith Empire has reigned foremost through military might for hundreds of years. Their soldiers are clad in blue garments and armor, and many of its citizens life a life of luxury, safe behind the colossal walls of its capital city of Arkades. They field giant warships into the air, as well as heavy, lumbering Walkers on the ground below. Recently, the Royal family was assassinated by a Barthosian nationalist group, the Black Sun. This prompted the only heir, Prince Armand Valka, to declare war on the entire nation of Barthos, thrusting the world into a bloody conflict.

Barthos: Barthos was one of the last countries to employ steam powered walkers and airships into their military, but when they did it produced some of the fiercest warships the world had yet seen, which were used to annex several small nations into the Barthosian empire. This new world power became hostile to other nations, trading small amounts of goods to its neighbors and gradually becoming more and more reclusive until the nationalist group the Black Sun assassinated the Disith Royal family, forcing the two world superpowers into a war. The capital of Barthos is Ten'ir.

Luft City: This small trading nation revolutionized air technology when it seceded from the nation of Ghreno and produced its own capital: a floating metropolis held miles above the ground by six giant zeppelins.

Gameplay: You will be assigned to the ship Elysium, a recently repaired privateer that fights for the Disith navy, but plunders everyone in sight as well. Follow orders and stay sharp: A long and bloody conflict is coming.
There are many open ranks: pick a preferred one. Not everyone will get what they want.

BACKGROUND:
Aaron was born poor in the Disith city of Norne. He made a living off scraps and stolen currency. At the age of 10, he was taken in by a faction of thieves, who taught him the arts of combat, theft and stealth. Three years later, the faction was killed by a raid by Disith troops, the captain of which found Aaron and adopted him. This rich family taught him the finer arts of battle, such as flying, fencing and firing. Aaron gained a sense of loyalty to Disith then, but he did not forget his roots. At the age of 19 his adopted father gave him command of his first ship. Aaron left the family, and went on to be a sky pirate, though one with chivalry and wisdom.

Here's an application I've made to see if I could join your roleplay. (Okay this character's actually pretty similar to another one I have in another roleplay, but I'm experimenting with backstories and such right now.)

NAME: Penblanche Gilvuscaelum (Pen-blahnk Geel-vus-kay-lum)

AGE: 67

APPEARANCE AND GARB: Stands at 5'5. Stocky. Has gray and blonde hair in a bun with old brown eyes. Often wears her late-husband's ornate fuschia coat over some rather plain clothes. Huge golden hoop earrings.

PREFERRED POSITION: Musketeer/Cook

PREFERRED WEAPONS: Daggers and Crowbars.

BACKGROUND: As a rule, Penblanche is a lady you don't want to mess around with. Penblanche was born tough; of her 5 siblings, Penblanche was the only one to survive a measles epidemic that swept Disith 64 years ago. Born to a family of peasants living in a sketchy part of Disith, Penblanche was always taught that hard work was what would earn her a paycheck. Despite this, Penblanche would always find herself in street fights over her gang's territory. On the side, Penblanche would work odd jobs, but she found her passion in cooking. A the age of 35 Penblanche was married to a mister Henry Gilvuscaelum, a pirate captain. From then on, Henry made sure his beloved wife needn't lift a single finger as long as he lived. (Of course, Penblanche would still occasionally sell illicit drugs, but that was more out of boredom than anything else). However, his death twenty years later made things difficult. From that point on, Penblanche decided that she would work as a pirate and live up to her late husband's great name. Though her husband was a great captain, Penblanche prefers a more humble position as a crew-member and cook for her companions. Despite her age, she's viscous with a crowbar and her daggers.
