It's a low-fantasy setting, so yeah, these are the big-ass wolves of legend that also represent the Stark sigil. There's also dragons in the lore and what not, and giants, snow zombies, trees with faces on them, shape shifters, and so on. The cool thing is, it's done in a way that it seems pretty believable and really played down that most of that stuff was long in the past and in the stories, and have no bearing on the real world that people live in for the most part.
