The asshole who says "First".
Basically, this is a game a few of us are bringing over from another site. Ultimate DC Universe was a game that we kept running for close to seven years, with a reboot in early 2009 that lasted all the way up to this year. We all put alot of effort, collectively, into building the world and establishing the main players pretty early on and were all quite proud of our work. We even got so far as to establish an Ultimate Justice League from the ground up, aswell as a Legion of Doom, a Teen Titans, and even "The Society", another group that Lex Luthor had put in place to manipulate the public's trust. Our last season over on the other site dealt heavily with the League and the Legion's falling out, ultimately leading to some interesting plotlines.
However, when planning our migration to the Guild, there was a realization that there were way too many characters established at random or otherwise underdeveloped. And with enough continuity to want to preserve as it was, we figured it'd be best to just reboot as much as we could.
So with the exception of about ten characters, with some vital NPC's attached and players from the previous game already claiming them, everything is going to be up for player revision. You can can make someone who's established or make them completely new. The setup is that it'll be an established universe of about five years, and those teams mentioned above will still be active, but everything will operate in the very loosest sense for most of the universe. Concepts like other worlds, alternate dimensions, magic and science start off relatively unexplored.
So while characters like Superman and Batman will have histories that remain intact, characters like Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Corps, The Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, the Justice Society, and everyone else who isn't on the list below will be allowed to restart with any backstory or origin that someone would want to create.
The list of established/taken characters are:
Superman
Batman/Jason Todd
Bruce Wayne
The Atom
Robin/Dick Grayson
Lex Luthor
Bane
The Joker
The Penguin
An OOC thread is already being set up with applications for those characters coming, so you'll also be able to see what their histories are and who their NPC's are before making a character choice.
Interested in building a new UDCU with us?

I'm going to be honest and say that this all seems very overwhelming and even as big of a fan as I am of AU's and the DC Unvierse I wouldn't even know where to begin. I'd say I'm interested but this would be my first foray into what I'd call an advanced roleplay in three years, but if I can find myself up to the challenge I can see what I can do. Even as I'm reading the OOC, I do not simply know where to begin. What are the limits on reimagining a universe hero? Is it limited to origin, completely different people donning the name, or what? Are alignment changes feasible? Any advice to denizens like myself who feel a little overwhelmed?
I wish I could just be whelmed.

My main advice is to try anything you want. Outside of creating OC's, there are pretty much no limitations of re-imagining a character. Origin, powerset, alignment, identity. Everything is up for revision. And as long as it's well written and steps on nobody's toes, it's likely to be approved. No need to be intimidated. We've seen all sorts of character concepts put forward.
To give an example, there was an application in the last version of the game that had The Joker as a telepath who was the ringmaster of a circus. That was made the canon version of The Joker, despite being quite radical from what he's like in the comics. There was also an application put forth for The Flash where he was a teenage hero akin to Spider-Man. Again, that was made canon.
I've actually got everything but the RP sample done, I've gone with an Captain Atom re-imagining and I hope it's up to snuff.I work good in 2 hours, apparently.
