The Singular Universe
Character Application
Character you wish to portray: Dr. Jonathan Crane A.K.A. ‘The Scarecrow’
Hero, villain, or walking the line?: Villain
Powers and physical attributes:
-Master of The Mind:
Dr. Crane received a Doctorate Degree in Psychology from Metropolis University. Not only that, he seems to have a natural affinity for figuring out peoples mental processes fairly easily and efficiently. Though this was originally used for good, and allowed him to have the highest rehabilitation scores in the clinic, he now uses it as The Scarecrow. He is known for breaking the sanity of all of his therapists with only his words, given enough time. Because of this, his therapist is rotated every two weeks.
‘Deadly Dancing’
A specialized fighting style Scarecrow created himself. He is quick and indirect in his attacks, and known for his evasiveness. This style is a mix and match of Drunken Boxing, as well as Crane Style Kung Fu. Crane learned Drunken Boxing in College while in Metropolis, and Crane Style Kung Fu from a foreign student at The University of Gotham he became good friends with.
King of Chemistry: Fear Toxin.
Inhalant only currently, though Scarecrow is working on diversifying it. While a tolerance to his toxin may be built up based on repeated exposure to it, it is virtually unheard of to resist it the first time you are ever dosed. The Toxin first disorientates the recipient, before making them live through their greatest fears. Currently..
Small Dose: Makes the recipient have a mental breakdown, and experience the more panic inducing and stressful situation their mind can perceive. It may cause convulsions, hallucinations, difficulty breathing, increased pulse, and a list of other things. It also creates mental issues (usually ‘flashbacks’ of the event) that may persist up to a few weeks. Standard use of Scarecrow on those he needs to gas. Episode Lasts usually half an hour.
Medium Dose: Runs the risk of permanently destroying the sanity of those that receive this. This is usually a alternative to killing one of Scarecrows enemies, as once they get this, they won’t ever be a significant problem again. The toxin itself lasts anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours.
Large Dose: Guaranteed to destroy the mind of the recipient. The effects can last for up to a few days, and Scarecrow usually only carries enough Toxin on him to use this once.
Scarecrows Mask Scarecrows burlap mask actually has a very effective, yet simple method in it to act as a gas mask that he learned from a book on Vietcong. This keeps him from accidentally gassing himself, while allowing him to simultaneously intimidate his enemies. It is, however, unneeded, as he has used his toxin on himself so many times he is nearly immune to it, having minimal effects.
Crow Carnage: His group of Crows will do his bidding, the group is lead by his main Crow, Nightmare. They can be used to great effect as messengers, spies, assailants, thief's, and a multitude of other things.
Origin and backstory (as you see it):
Jonathan Crane was born to two fairly normal parents in the city of Metropolis. His father was a Professor at the University of Metropolis. Unfortunately, only two years after his birth, they died in a car crash. He lived with his Aunt in Metropolis until five, where his Aunts failing health made him completely relocate to Gotham to live with his Grandmother. She was a religious zealot, and when he misbehaved, she would tell him he needed to be more like Jesus, and lock him in an abandoned church for hours at a time, and have her own trained Crows attack him. Well, all except one. As he grew older, this one crow slowly became not his pet, but his friend. His only friend. The Church was dilapidated and dark, and being locked in this Church severely physiologically traumatized Jonathan. However, unlike most boys his age, he took a Scholarly interest in his Fear, and quickly became obsessed with the feeling. In himself, and others.
When he became a teenager, his grandmother became too sickly to punish him in that awful way anymore, though he began to be severely bullied at school by other kids, and was routinely mugged and beaten by them. During the prom, the girl he asked out on a date (Rose Trimmel) rejected him for a football player who routinely picked on him, routinely calling him “Scarecrow” not only for his lanky frame, but also the Crow that seemed to follow the boy wherever he went.
The crow eventually disappeared when Jonathan went to Metropolis University to get his Degree in Psychology, wishing to continue upon his father’s experiments revolving around Fear. Nor did it ever return when he returned to Gotham and got a job as a Professor at The University of Gotham.
He was fired for his eccentricities, and for allegedly brandishing a loaded gun in class, and shooting a potted plant to demonstrate sudden panic, and fear. However, a shard of the pot hit a young girl, and his career was over.
Now he works by day at Arkham Asylum, responsible for the lower class more manageable ‘guests’, usually just psychopaths. Though he did aspire to eventually work with Gothams REAL Monsters, like Joker or Riddler.
He has harbored a hatred for both Rose Trimmel, his grandmother, and the bullies who made his life Hell for many years now, and still keeps tabs on their locations. It is only as of late that Dr. Crane feels like the burning need to seek Vengeance is nearly to the point of overtaking his logical willpower…
Why have you chosen this character?: Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain, and I’ve always wanted to RP him!
What do you believe you can bring to the RPG?: I’ve been Roleplaying for many years now, and while my own skills may not be perfect, I can work with other PC’s very well, and am very communicative and respectful to others characters (unless I’m trying to kill you).
Provide a sample post as the character you wish to portray, three paragraphs or more and with at least one line of dialogue:
Cranes pulse was racing as the door to the decrypt old building slowly opened, revealing dust and overgrown plants covering the inside of the Nave. He slowly stepped inside, his shiny black shoes making a striking contraction against the dirty and old floor. His bright blue eyes scanned the environment, and He remembered in his youth the windows had been all bordered up, yet now one or two of them had been smashed open, allowing a small amount of sunlight to slip into the dark church.
Jonathan could nearly feel the bloodthirsty crows of his grandmother tearing and nipping away at his young pink flesh. He felt nauseous and disorientated. Still, he must press on. He felt the weight of a small suitcase in his left hand, and felt his body moving seemingly without his control. He walked slowly and deliberately up the pews, to the Altar. Here, he placed his suitcase and blew the dust away with a short breath. He heard a small rustling deeper in the church, where it was sure to be even darker and dustier. He turned his head and looked at the door leading into the back of the Church. He had gone that way only once in his life, and he hadn’t ever planned to return that way before… Yet now, everything felt different. He heard the small noises in the back of the Church begin to grow more agitated, and he felt adrenaline release itself in his veins.
Despite his best efforts, he was beginning to panic from the Fear of this horrid place. From the traumatization that happened when he was but a boy in here. Why did he need to come back here so badly..? To face his past, and finally let it go..?
All at once, clarity filled the young man’s mind. He knew why he had come. He had come to Embrace the Fear that had cost him his childhood, and use it to Avenge himself! Against all those who had ever wronged him! He wanted to teach these people fear, Fear like he had known.
Suddenly, the noises in the back stopped all together, and Jonathan realized he had been quiet deep in thought. A silence descended on the Church that was heavy and ominous, perhaps even worse than the strange stirrings he had heard before. It was as if whatever had been moving had finally noticed him, and wasn’t sure what to do yet. Jonathan tried to calm his breathing and count in his head, standing slightly crouched over his brief case at the Altar, trying to be dead silent. He felt like this was it; he was finally going to Embrace the Fear that had ruled his life for so many long years.. About to be united with this constant Terror.
”COME GET ME YOU FLYING BASTARDS!” He felt himself screech towards the doorway leading into darkness and farther back. He had no control now, and all at once it felt like thousands of black missiles shot out of the Darkness at once, and engulfed not only him, but the entire Nave and Altar. They cawed and screeched back with furious anger, and bite and pecked at his flesh where they could. He cried out in pain and fell to a fetile position, trying to use the Altar as some form of cover. One of the screeching black monsters attacked his suitcase, and it fell from the Altar onto his head, temporarily dazing him.
Yet as the crows flew about in their fury and ripped into his flesh and pulled his hair and cut at his standard black suit, he saw through the tears of pain a single crow land in front of him, and cock its head to the side. It seemed to be the biggest out of all the crows, almost the size of a cat. It also had a cut along its face creating a scar on the left side of its face. It squeaked at him and ripped open the briefcase allowing a small amount of burlap to fall out.
A particularly vicious crow swooped down just then, and bit his nose before swooping back and biting his ear. He reached out with his heart pounding and tears in his eyes and grabbed at the burlap, before fiercely ripping it from the suit case and shoving it onto his head. With a gasp, he felt.. Power.
He stood up and broke free from the crows assault, yelling out with nearly a Inhuman vigor,
“I. AM. THE SCARECROW! AND I SHALL NOT FEAR YOU… ANYMORE!” He swiped a hand and hit two crow to the ground, before pointing at wall and yelling out “OBEY ME!”
Surprisingly enough, the crows still seemed as energized and enraged as before and very surprised at his fighting back against them. They seemed hesitant, but when the largest crow did as Scarcrow commanded, the rest quickly follow suit. He began to giggle like a child that has discovered something amazing, as he noticed wherever he pointed in the Church, the crows would fly to. He even had two pick up his briefcase and set it back on the Altar. The largest crow flew over and landed on the Altar next to him with a caw, and he looked at it with genuinely affectionate eyes behind his burlap mask of protection.. And insanity.
“You.. You saved me. My little friend from when I was in High School..
You..Helped me end my..Nightmare.
Yes… Nightmare..” He smiled and petted the head of the bird, which it seemed to squawk happily.
“Come, Nightmare. We’re going to be needing a few things for what I have in store..”
With that, Scarecrow picked up his briefcase and casually walked into the darkness of the door in the back; into the back of the Church where his tormentors had once lurked. Yet now.. . He joined them. The crows followed their new master eagerly into the darkness.

As for something like Man-Bat, I'd run that by Master Bruce, as I know he'll be putting up one hell of a Batman CS.
