In a small, sleepy city on the west coast of the United States, an archaeology project unearths a stone thought to be a meteor that hit the planet long ago. The meteor is put in a museum, and the discovery brings much needed attention to the city...until it is stolen by a mystery thief. According to the security cameras and all guard personnel, the stone was there one moment and gone the next--no images or witnesses were able to provide any clue as to the thief's identity or the method he used. But the theft is soon forgotten as a much larger problem arises.
A series of murders leaves the city terrified. Night after night, people are stabbed to death with no clues left behind. Even eyewitnesses to the murders cannot offer any insight--the victim is fine one moment and dead the next, and no one can remember seeing anything or anyone. The mystery confounds police, and superstitious fear spreads throughout the city. Rumors about the identity of the murderer and his methods are everywhere, but the truth is nowhere to be found.
But then, someone survives the attack. They are found with near-fatal wounds, yet still alive. They are rushed to the hospital, and soon seized by a high fever. For days they lie comatose...but when they awaken, they find the assailant's mark completely healed--and their memory of the incident, gone. The police are unable to obtain anything that could lead to the murderer's identity. It is as if this person is completely invisible, as if any trace of their existence has been erased. Still the murders continue...but soon, other survivors emerge as well. They repeat the same process as the first--their wounds heal with shocking speed, but their memories disappear. And yet, in place of what has been taken from them, something new has been given. They begin to discover strange, supernatural powers...and make contact with beings that aren't at all human.
You are one of the survivors of the murderer's assaults. You did not see, hear, or in any way sense the attacker...nor can you remember exactly what you were doing before you were attacked, save for what you can deduce from where you were found and what items you had on your person at the time. You only know that now, something about you is different and...bizarre.
You begin to discover strange abilities...and soon, a being reveals itself to you.
This is only the beginning...of A Bizarre Story...
I was trying to kill myself.
Joey Jonasson looked down at his chest, where only a few days ago a deep gash had been. The blade had stabbed him in the left pectoral, and it had gone deep. If he hadn't been found on the street--how had he gotten down from the rooftop?--lying in a puddle of his own blood, someone else would have saved him that effort of trying to end his own life. But he had survived. And now he wasn't so sure he wanted to try again. Everything felt different now.
There was a knock at the door, and the detective walked in. Joey shifted in his chair by the window, turning away from the view of the city to look at the grizzled man. The guy could have stepped right out of one of those old-fashioned noir movies--he had an overcoat, a fedora, and bristles on his chin that looked rough enough to grate cheese.
"You feeling any better today? The doctor said they were letting you go."
"Yes." Joey sighed. "But I still don't remember anything. I've told you everything I can."
"Just like all the others." The detective crossed his arms. "Every single one. How is it even possible?"
"Why ask me? If I knew, I would have told you." Joey said, and turned away again. "Sorry."
"Well, if you do remember anything, you have my card." said the detective. He looked around the room, his gaze pausing for a moment on the duffle bag on the bed and the folded clothes next to it before moving back to the boy. "Take it easy, kid."
He left, and Joey got up. He decided to go ahead and change out of the hospital gown; the sooner he was able to get out of here, the better. As he was throwing on his clothes, he happened to glance out of the window, over the city...and for a moment, he thought he saw someone standing on a rooftop, just as he had done that night. But when he blinked, the vaguely human-shaped speck was gone. He shook his head and turned away. Grabbing the remainder of his things and throwing them into the duffel bag, he left the room and headed for the elevator down the hall.
